Years ago, on a trip to Spain, I penned out this fanciful handwritten script and just fell in love with it. I came across that old sketchbook recently, and the love affair was renewed. The “Trixy Toy Educator” was a 1930s-era set of letters and numbers (along with a few animal shapes) for teaching children, and was manufactured by the Durrel Company of Gardner, Massachusetts. Die cut from thick cardboard, the 40 piece set also included a rack to display the characters, presumably for little ones to practice the correct order of the alphabet and basic numerals or to spell simple words like ‘dog’ or ‘cat’. Whomever came up with the idea, they used the most rudimentary and unusual ‘type design’ shapes in the A-Z and 0-9, but they were just odd enough to inspire a digital type version of them. School Age JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

This family was inspired by the edition De Civitate Dei (by Sanctus Augustinus) printed in 1467 in Sobiano (Italy, Roma) by Konrad Sweynheym and Arnold Pannartz who was the Punchcutter. It is one of the first few “Roman style” fonts, just before the birth of Jenson’s pattern (look at 1470 Jenson Latin). The present font contains all of the specific latin abbreviations and ligatures used in the original (about 54). Added are the accented characters and a few others not in use in this early period of printing. Decorated letters such as 1512 Initials, 1550 Arabesques, 1565 Venetian, or 1584 Rinceau can be used with this family without anachronism. If Italic style is required (not yet existing in early time of printing), we recommend using 1557 Italique.

This is the definitive standard African font. It combines wonderful readability with tremendous panache. The fact that it has a full character set (UPPER and lower case), all punctuation and all special characters, means that it can be used in just about any African design context. If you had only one African font in your arsenal, it would have to be Aarde Black. The name "Aarde" means "earth" and refers to the gutsy, earthy character of the letterforms. It includes a full character set: characters for English, French, Italian, German, and Portuguese. The numerals are mono-spaced, and are very readable so that they will line up correctly in columns of figures. The letters of the alphabet are correctly kerned so that they appear correctly in text.

The story of Humana begins with an exclusive volume about some manuscripts in Biblioteca Palatina in Parma, Italy. The title page uses the characters upon which I designed Humana. I suppose they were drawn for that volume. Examining the reproductions in the book I found that the characters on the title page immitate the lettering in a manuscript from the 15th century with Petrarca's Rime volgari". Not bad as origin! But I cannot free myself from the thought that there may be a typeface with that looks, not just a few characters drawn for that volume. My reference books could not give me any answer about that. The name Humana refers to the humanistic era from which the characters originate. Humana was released in 1994.

Once I had a young, very eager and interested designer in my employ. We got into talking about where our letterforms come from and the habits in perception we are used to. He did not quite believe me. So I said, let's try to design a typeface where everything is just the opposite of what we are used to. We really had a hard time, our habits crept up on us all the time. But after a couple of weeks we finally finished this typeface and wanted to call it crazytype, but my young apprentice ­ who did most of the manual labor ­ said Contype sounded crazier. Bodoni Classic Deco Two, like the original Bodoni Classic Deco, breaks all rules. Giambattista Bodoni himself would probably hate me for doing it; he was a real purist. The whole idea of the Bodoni typeface is no embellishments and here I go and decorate those nice clear letters. Shame on me! But I find this is a very nice and useful typeface for all kinds of cards and certificates. So I just did it for all of you out there that are not born purists, and want a little embellishment to their lives. And to make things worse, I added a small caps cut. I even decorated the numbers. Here in the heart of Santa Monica, in the disused 1940s aircraft hangar we like to call the Comicraft Studios, we know that times are tough. As we were driving to “work” in the back of our chauffeur driven Humvee limo, sipping martinis out of the navels of Playboy bunnies and wondering what font we should release next, we decided it was time to reach out to the poor people. Yes, we felt it was time to create a font for the huddled masses yearning to breathe free, for the wretched refuse of our teeming shores. A font, if you will, for the tempest-tossed. It’s a little skinny and might be described as pinched and starved, but it’s guaranteed to see you through this current economic crisis as only the 26 letters of the alphabet can. It was a tall order, but Jazzy JG Roshell created this one while he was in line at the bank, waiting for his personal bailout. Meticulously crafted using one of those ballpoint pens attached to the cashier’s station by elastic, Credit Crunch is the Hamburger Helper of comic book fonts. It’s kind of a hybrid -- just like the Priuses our trophy wives drive to their personal plastic surgeons -- and it’s solar powered and also comes with a tank full of good old fashioned Biro ink. P22 ST.G Shrift is a font series based on the type designs of Stefan George with an italic version designed by Colin Kahn. Stefan George (1868-1933) was a German poet who led the revolt against realism in German literature. All of his works were privately published and the typefaces that were used reflected his neo-classic and anti-industrial (progessive) aesthetics; oftentimes consisting of his own hand lettering designs. The original font was cast in 1907 by a small foundry in Germany and was used primarily for the works of George as well as other books including a monumental edition of Dante's Divine Comedy. The ST.G Shrift Fonts contained in this set are derived from 3 known variations of the original roman typeface, St.G., found in various books published in Berlin in the early 20th century. ST.G Shrift One contains the most idiosyncratic characters, while ST.G Shrift Two uses more familiar characters as well as a redesign of characters including the t and the k to be more in keeping with modern san-serif designs. The OpenType version of the roman contains both one and two and expands on them by including central European characters, small caps, and small caps titling figures. Bohy was a candidate when it was felt there was a need for a "house font" to start a design service. Bluestar is a roundhand script with modern touch. It has round terminals and quite low stroke contrast. It has five weights in upright and italic styles. Bluestar has two sets of capital letters; one is more basic and subtle and the other (Stylistic Set 1) is bigger and fancier. Bluestar has also lots of alternates for ascender, descenders, end swashes etc. to give a good amount of possibilities to play with and make some unique designs. Douglass Pen was inspired by the handwriting of Frederick Douglass, who was born an American slave but died a distinguished 19th century statesman, orator, and abolitionist leader. He also had fine penmanship. Douglass Pen is modeled chiefly after Douglass's handwritten account of John Brown's famous 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia. It simulates his somewhat condensed cursive, dashed off in a swift, bold style. The OpenType release has more than 800 glyphs, including scores of ligatures, alternative upper cases, inkblots, crossouts, and Eastern European characters.

Traveling through the central and southern parts of Mexico a number of years ago, I couldn’t help but be impressed with the amazing architecture of the indigenous peoples. From the giant pyramids of Teotihuacan to the extensive and impressive layout of Chichén Itzá to the smaller-but-spectacular Monte Alban ruins in Oaxaca, creativity abounds. One of the things I most enjoyed were the carved stone friezes that ran around many of the more complete buildings. Oaxaca calls to mind those beautiful carvings and, strangely, Chinese writing.

Bielik was created for a comic book that I’m working on. Main goal was to achieve random character of texts, so I made three glyphs for every letter, even for diacritics. Firstly I was drawing using brush pen with ink, so thickness of letters was really various. I decided to implement this style into a font. So that is how Bielik came into the world.
