From the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, by way of Toronto, comes Martie's handwriting. Martie Byrd is a school teacher in Roanoke, Virginia, and a friend of Canada Type's Rebecca Alaccari. After years of admiring the cheer and clarity of Martie's handwriting, we asked her to write out full alphabets for some cool font treatment. The intent was to do three different versions of her writing in two different pens, then use the auto-magic of OpenType to determine letter sequences and rotate character sets on the fly when the fonts are in use. A successful endeavor it was. Take a look at the images in the MyFonts gallery to see the character rotation in action, along with a visual explanation of why Martie is not just another handwriting font. Unlike other available felt tip and ballpoint handwriting fonts, the regular and bold variations are style-based, not weight-based. They are the handwritten expressions of two different Sharpie pens: The fine point one (Martie Bold), and the ultrafine one (Martie Regular). The style-based variation considerably helps the realism needed in design pieces that take advantage of the contrast of two different handwriting fonts. Weight thickening in handwriting is an obvious mechanical effect that only happens with computers. Weight changing by replacing pens is what happens in the real world. Martie Pro and Martie Pro Bold each contain three different character sets in a single font. Language support includes Western, Central and Eastern European languages for all three sets. This translates into each Pro font containing over 750 characters. Add OpenType code and stir, and you have true handwriting fonts with versatility unavailable out there in anything else of the genre. A software program that supports OpenType features is needed to use the randomization coded in Martie Pro and Martie Pro Bold. Current versions of QuarkXpress and Adobe applications (Photoshop, Illlustrator, InDesign) do contain support for the randomization feature. But if you don't have one of these apps, you can still use the interchangeable Type 1 or True Type fonts and change the characters manually to achieve the appearance of true handwriting. My family and I recently moved to a ‘fixer upper’ farm from the 1930’s. It came with a slightly run down barn, 4000 square metres of land and a LOT of redcurrant bushes. I can’t really say that I am overly fond of them. I find them a bit too tart. As a kid, I used to smother them in sugar, but I can’t do that any longer, since I am a responsible dad… ;-) Redcurrant is a slightly wonky, slightly crazy handmade font. It can be used for book covers or post cards, but feel free to use it for whatever. Comes with cute little swashes as well.

As a family, we love to go camping. We have a big Norwegian tunnel tent (4 season - with room for a wood stove), some really warm down sleeping bags and a primitive field kitchen. Even though our camping trips are usually devoid of luxury, the kids love them! We always choose campsites that are close to nature, like a national park or in the mountains. A couple of years ago, we toured the southern part of England and one of our camping stops was in Exmoor National Park. Minehead is a small coastal town, not far from where we camped, so I named this font after a fond memory! Minehead is a handmade display font. It was loosely based on Haettenschweiler. The Dalecarlian runes, or dalrunes, was a late version of the runic script that was in use in the Swedish province of Dalarna until the 20th century.The province has consequently been called the "last stronghold of the Germanic script. When Carl Linnaeus visited Älvdalen in Dalarna in 1734, he made the following note in his diary: The peasants in the community here, apart from using rune staves, still today write their names and ownership marks with runic letters, as is seen on walls, corner stones, bowls, etc. Which one does not know to be still continued anywhere else in Sweden. The Dalecarlian runes were derived from the medieval runes, but the runic letters were combined with Latin ones, and Latin letters would progressively replace the runes. At the end of the 16th century, the Dalecarlian runic inventory was almost exclusively runic, but during the following centuries more and more individual runes were replaced with Latin characters. In its last stage almost every rune had been replaced with a Latin letter, or with special versions that were influenced by Latin characters.

Jan Tschichold designed Sabon in 1964, and it was produced jointly by three foundries: D. Stempel AG, Linotype and Monotype. This was in response to a request from German master printers to make a font family that was the same design for the three metal type technologies of the time: foundry type for hand composition, linecasting, and single-type machine composition. Tschichold turned to the sixteenth century for inspiration, and the story has a complicated family thread that connects his Sabon design to the Garamond lineage. Jakob Sabon, who the type is named for, was a student of the great French punchcutter Claude Garamond. He completed a set of his teacher's punches after Garamond's death in 1561. Sabon became owner of a German foundry when he married the granddaughter of the Frankfurt printer, Christian Egenolff. Sabon died in 1580, and his widow married Konrad Berner, who took over the foundry. Tschichold loosely based his design on types from the 1592 specimen sheet issued by the Egenolff-Berner foundry: a 14-point roman attributed to Claude Garamond, and an italic attributed to Robert Granjon. Sabon was the typeface name chosen for this twentieth century revival and joint venture in production; this name avoided confusion with other fonts connected with the names of Garamond and Granjon. Classic, elegant, and extremely legible, Sabon is one of the most beautiful Garamond variations. Always a good choice for book typography, the Sabon family is also particularly good for text and headlines in magazines, advertisements, documentation, business reports, corporate design, multimedia, and correspondence. Herbert Thannhaeuser’s 1953 titling font Erler-Versalien which was distributed by Typoart in hot-metal times, was carefully redrawn and redesigned. The chapbook Pen & Brush Lettering and Practical Alphabets, published by Blandford Press, Ltd., London, in 1929 averred that these letterforms suggested a lightface version of Neuland. And so they do, with the added bonus that this typeface, unlike its inspiration, includes lowercase characters.

Bengala is a font based on Calligraphy & Geometry designed by Carlos Fabián Camargo. Its purpose is to be an innovative typographic system combining Script letters with geometric and hard Caps letters. The contradictory styles are ideal for designing covers, posters, branding and packaging. Its smooth calligraphic look meticulously incorporates characters to design logos and phrases that communicate dynamism and strategy. Bengala Script was inspired by Mistral by R. Excoffon. Bengala Script provides violent and unstable lines with generous spacing between the letters and tight horizontal proportions, producing showy upper and lower case italics inspired by French Gothic calligraphy late fifteenth century. For this reason, Bengala Script retains some uninterrupted calligraphic logic, up and down sometimes higher or shorter than the height of the lowercase, creating dynamism through a variable amount of contrast between thick and thin strokes. Bengala Dingbats has 62 drawings designed to accompany the designs. Script and Caps Bengala have different gender and the similar X height produces more visual appeal. This way Bengala Caps - inspired by the Porshe logo, due to its geometric uppercase Roman construction, extended horizontal proportions, light caliber, rounded strokes terminations and generous spacing between letters. This display stencil typeface is extension from Gazeta font family, where the letterform cuts are more mechanical without loosing their own natural structure. Italic versions are not available, only roman characters.

Tomi Haaparanta got the idea for the Tyke typeface family after using Cooper Black for a design project. He liked Cooper's chubby design, but longed for a wider range of weights. “I wanted a typeface that was cuddly and friendly,” recalls Haaparanta, “but also one that was readable at text sizes.” He started tinkering with the idea, and Tyke began to emerge. Even though Haaparanta knew his boldest weight would equal the heft of Cooper Black, he began drawing the Tyke family with the medium. His goal was to refine the characteristics of the design at this moderate weight, and then build on it to create the light and bold extremes. Haaparanta got the spark to design type in 1990, when he attended a workshop held by Phil Baines at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. “I've been working and playing with type ever since,” Haaparanta recalls. He released his first commercial font in 1996, while working as an Art Director in Helsinki. After about two dozen more releases, he founded his own type studio, Suomi Type Foundry, early in 2004. At five weights plus corresponding italics, Tyke easily fulfills Haaparanta's goal of creating a wide range of distinctive, completely usable designs. The light through bold weights perform well at both large and small sizes, while the Black is an outstanding alternative to Cooper for display copy.

Font editors allow one to blend fonts, that is, to take two different fonts and create a new one by averaging the two source fonts. This feature is responsible for the many different weights that come with some modern typefaces. It can also be used to blend completely different fonts, though these blends will require a lot of cleaning and correcting to make them useable. EuroikaKamp began as a blend of two vastly different faces: Euroika, a face with a lot of contrast, straight lines, and smooth curves, and KampFriendship, a hand drawn serif that is almost mono linear. The result is an odd, quirky face that may be useful when one wants a very readable font without the precision and formality of a standard text font.

Fado is a calligraphic typeface based on the broad nib calligraphy. It has a lot of alternates, ligatures, initial and final forms. The font has 3 sets of length and complexity of ascenders and descenders. It allows the user to chose the style: simple, with more complicated forms, with a lot of flourishes, and even mix all 3 styles.

British poster artist Cecil Wade provided the lowercase for this typeface, and his compatriot T. G. Birtles provided the uppercase. The result is a rollicking, frolicking, bouncy romp through the alphabet, not unlike a ride in the compartment for which it is named. Both versions of this font include the complete Latin 1252 and CE 1250 character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

Hello, friends! I recently bought myself an old game console, the SEGA Mega Drive 2. For a long time I couldn't understand why, when I was a kid, it seemed incredible to play it. »Cristal Text« has nice to read lower case letters. It contains 636 letters per font style and some Open Type features: Different stylistic alternates and different sets of numerals. It is not monospaced: Therefor it stays not true to an underlying grid like it’s bigger brother »Cristal True«. But this offers a better legibility. The basis of this font is a Union-Jack or sixteen-segment display (SISD). I have found myself in the need of a precise and well-made font, that simulates the look of such a LCD display. Also it should offer enough letters and language support for the whole European region as well as different font styles.

A typewriter gives you clean, crisp text from its keys, but Type Wronger JNL does anything but this. A distressed typewriter font, this font emits a rough, crude imprint as if the original had been photocopied, copied from that copy and re-copied until the original message had degenerated.

For those who wish to use the Sofia Pro font family in a variable version, this family comes in 2 files with 2 axes of variation (weight and italic). This version gives you a lot of freedom in the creation for your next project with a multitude of possibilities.

A modern black-letter, so to speak. Composed of a few basic elements with a wide-quill ductus. Faber Fraktur was based on the idea that it must be possible to create a modern black-letter type. The typeface is ”constructed“ according to the same principles as a script without serifs: as few varied basic forms as possible, omission of frills which make the type difficult to read and repetition of similar forms. The typical contrasting strokes of the original handwritten black-letter script are retained nonetheless. The elements of this typeface were even pre-formed with the quill. All characters are reduced to their basic skeleton. The fanciness and manifold ”breaks“ or fractures typical of black-letter typefaces are considerably reduced to just a few essentials. Faber Fraktur is a very legible type perfectly suitable for long texts. It does not appear nearly as foreign and archaic as the old black-letter fonts. The capital letters especially have a charm of their own radiating a kind of playfulness in spite of their severe form.

No mystery here: this typeface is based on the not-often-seen Cooper Black Swash Italic, designed by Oswald Bruce Cooper. Swash variants are the norm with this font, but enabling Contextual Alternates will prevent collisions between the swash “tails” and letters with descenders. Both versions of this font contain the Unicode 1252 (Latin) and Unicode 1250 (Central European) character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

Koehler Sans JNL was inspired by a set of cardboard sign kit letters made by the Koehler Sign Company of Missouri (presumably) in the late 1940s or early 1950s. Not much is known about them, other than the letters looked interesting enough to turn into a font.

Here's a refined version of Grange, released by Edinburgh's Miller & Richards foundry just around the turn of the twentieth century. A bit quirky with a lot of warmth. Both flavors of this font feature the 1252 Latin, 1250 Central European, 1254 Turkish and 1257 Baltic character sets.
