An ad found within the pages of the Sept. 7, 1939 issue of Motion Picture Daily for "The Man They Could Not Hang" had the film's title hand lettered in a slightly stylized bold sans serif design. This is now available as Criminal Trial JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Designer Steven Skaggs wanted a versatile uncial typeface that was not simply decorative. Traditionally, a true uncial is a majuscule form, entirely lacking in ascenders and descenders. However, by designing Rieven Uncial, Skaggs found a way to use the true uncial as inspiration but retained a lowercase look and feel. Typically, uncials do not have italic forms but in order for Rieven to be a truly versatile face, it was imperative that it should be accompanied by an italic. The italic form owes much to the historical roots in the letra antigua cursiva of the 15th century humanist masters. Rieven Uncial was awarded a Certificate of Excellence in Type Design in the 2010 TDC2.

A modern sans serif with open round forms. The ”round“ letters emphasize the condensed open oval; the light counter forms provide the rhythm of the typeface, causing the typeface to appear gentle and pleasing. The ”modern“ design of a and g being especially contributive here. All of the letters are recognizably narrow, almost ”condensed,“ the forms being very functionally shaped. The construction of the ”triangular“ upper case letters A M N V W as well as v and w, especially catches the eye with the shafts joined together as beams are stacked upon each other. Quiroga Serif began in 2007 with the name Quadratta Serif. This typography was designed for continuous text, legible at medium and small sizes, with great saving of space, optimized for 6, 8, 10 and 12 points. The morphology is a mix between tradition and innovation; it has a vertical axis, thick serifs, tall x-height, light modulation and a lot of internal space between letters: key to improve legibility at small sizes. Formally, my idea was to make a serif type that had a unique color, this is visible due to the light modulation. This is also complemented with the incorporation of not common, alternative signs. Some parts of the letters that are usually curb or diagonal where made horizontal (for example: a, q, p, etc.), this makes the eye of each character to be wide and unique. The serifs (wedge type) suffered diverse variations during the process. At the begining they where thicker and ended vertically, but this caused a great deal of printing errors. And so we decided to modify them by giving them an angle to avoid visible errors in medium and small sizes. The ch, and ll ligatures where rescued because they are a part of our current spanish alphabet. The historic ligatures and stylistic alternates give different options to users who want different alternatives within a text. The accentuation signs were composed in a middle line above all signs to avoid visual shock. We also gave plenty of importance to small caps numbers, mathematical signs and currency signs so that the could interact well.

AndrewAndreas is a simple, clean, sans-serif font family that is highly legible and useful for both text and display purposes. The original three weights were designed in 1994 and three additional weights plus oblique styles were added in 2020. Also added were several OpenType features, including subscripts, superscripts, and fractions. The six oblique styles slant the upright styles but do not change the shape of the letters. However, three OpenType stylistic alternatives provide alternative letter forms for a, f, i, j, and l for five of the obliques and they can be used for a more traditional italics appearance.

My handwriting with a speedmarker turned into a font - well, not really, to be honest! Personally I did do all the writing of letters, but in order for the letters to fit perfectly together, I manipulated them - just a tad! But the result is a hasty set of letters! When I say I wrote all the letters, I mean it literally!!! All letters are unique, meaning all the accented characters are unique! On top of that, Laxory comes with ligatures for both double lowercase letters and numbers! You will need to use OpenType supporting applications to use the autoligatures.

The idea was to find common intersections between the humanistic and the neo-grotesque model of sans. This variable font offers everything from the world of sans serif in one place – a broad range of weights, adjustable contrast, and a lot of alternative glyphs. As a bonus, you can choose the “cold” or “warm” impact of the text. The Cosan Cold variant has closed apertures and minimal tension in the manner of Helvetica, and the Cosan Warm is open, more dynamic, and airy. Cosan is very suitable for a parallel bilingual setting, as both types are equivalent in their proportions and text color. Like Yin and Yang, each has a piece of the other in him. The Warm version is not totally dynamic, nor is the Cold version totally rigid.

In 2006 the art director of Emotion, a women’s psychology magazine, asked me to design a copy typeface for them. Before I actually got the job I started to work on a serif. I wanted it to be feminine but still clear and modern. On one hand there are the floral round elements and on the other hand the angular serifs. In the composition I wanted the two extremes to work together. All the other elements had to be harmonized. The proportions needed to match the magazine’s requirements. The ascenders and descenders are short enough to work in narrow columns but long enough to work in small sizes. As you can imagine, the emotion-job never happened. In copy you should not get heavier than Heavy. Extrabold and Ultrabold work best in display.

Wilhelm Klingspor Gotisch appeared in 1925 with the Klingspor font foundry in Offenbach, Germany. Designer Rudolf Koch based his work on the Gothic forms of the 14th century and his broken letter font is often seen in advertisements. However, the ornamental letters do not match today’s legibility standards and Wilhelm Klingspor Gotisch is therefore recommended for use in headlines and short texts with a point size of 12 or larger.

Magneton is a brush script typeface that contains three weights and two slant angles. Three weights simulates the pressure of the brush pen; light is written with a gentle pressure and the bold one with more pressure. Two slant angles gives Magneton two natures; the more casual one and the more dynamic one. So with this script you have lots of options to choose from. You can adjust the look and feel just like when writing with a real brush pen! Magneton has lots of alternates and swash characters. It has two sets (and more) of upper case letters. The more basic one and the more flamboyant one. It also has lots and lots of lower case alternates: two styles of end swashes, underlines, a few different ascender and descer swashes and much more. Carilliantine updates the organic curves of Art Nouveau typefaces typified by John F. Cumming's Desdemona, designed around 1886. A contemporary monoline sans reinterpretation rather than a more traditional serif, its high-waisted emphasis lends it an elegance and class. Carilliantine is replete with hundreds of two- and three-letter ligatures that bring a customised uniqueness to any headline. These are on by default, and can be toggled on or off in the Opentype palette of Adobe apps, or chosen individually according to taste from the Glyphs menu. Suitable for upmarket food packaging, wine labels, restaurants, folk bands, sword and sorcery trilogies, cosmetics and fashion brands that nod to the refinement of yesteryear, but are very much of today.

The other day, I was thinking how time flies and how my kids grow up so fast. In the blink of an eye, they had turned from babies into almost-teenagers. They're not teenagers yet, but given their tantrums, it does feel like I have three teenagers in the house... ;-) Ogenblik, in Dutch, means: ‘in the blink of an eye’, ‘lightning fast’, or ‘for a brief moment’. It’s similar to the German ‘Augenblick’, which means exactly the same. Ogenblik was made with the same dried out marker pen that helped me create my font Castlerigg. I guess it had more than one extra font in it! Ogenblik is a bit of a grungy, yet quite legible and neat font. Comes with multilingual support.

Hexonu is a weird, awkward, monospaced font family. In place of true lower-case letters, it has a second set of capitals that, through the magic of the OpenType contextual alternatives (calt) feature, automatically alternates with the set on the upper-case keys. If one wants to use only one set of letters, the contextual alternatives must be turned off and character spacing adjusted. Hexonu is another effort to create a font with alternating sets of letters (see PoultySign, Lentzers, and Caltic for others). The base shape for forming the letters is a lopsided hexagon that resembles an old coffin. In four of the six family members, the alternating shape is a distorted hour-glass. In the other two, coffin shapes heads-up alternate with coffin shapes heads-down. The family was created as an experiment with the calt feature and not for any particular use. It does not work as text but its bizarreness makes it appropriate for some poster and signage applications.

The typeface which inspired this offering was originally called "Chaucer", not because it is typical of lettering of Chaucer’s time (which it is not) but, more likely, because it’s pretty funny, even if the humor is low. Another purveyor of low humor, Mack Sennett and his Keystone Kops, suggested this version’s name. Both versions of this font include the complete Unicode Latin 1252 and Central European 1250 character sets.

ITC Typados is the joint effort of Roselyne and Michel Besnard and is composed of characters in two different senses of the word. First, it is of course made of letters and symbols, clean and legible with generous widths and x-heights. There is a hint of Art Nouveau style in the tapering, brush-like strokes. But the figures of ITC Typados are also made of characters in the theatrical sense: little tear-drop heads on tapering bodies that bend themselves into the shapes of an alphabet while maintaining a life of their own. The typeface is based on a recurring character in Michel's sculpture and painting, Ado. Ado is the first character who sings and repeats itself in all my creations," says Michel.
