FS Emeric reconciles a pair of seemingly opposing approaches: the systematic but chilly functionalism of early modernist typography, trapped in time, and a warmer, more emotional, more optimistic spirit. Appetite Discussions with some of Fontsmith’s design studio clients had revealed an appetite for a new kind of typeface that could express mid-century modernist principles in a fresh, contemporary voice. As he crafted the letterforms that would form FS Emeric, Phil Garnham was guided by two central ideas. First, there was Jan Tschichold’s contention that a good letter is “one that expresses itself, speaking with the utmost distinctiveness and clarity”. Second was a belief that a font can be personally expressive without compromising its functionality. These provided the fuel that drove the project to its conclusion. Posters To mark the launch of FS Emeric, Fontsmith asked 11 eminent design studios from around the world – the likes of Pentagram, Studio Dumbar, Bibliotheque, Non-Format and Build – to create a limited edition A1 poster. Each poster celebrated a different weight of FS Emeric, and just 50 of each were screen-printed by Dan Mather onto 175gsm Colorplan stock. “We gave away a randomly selected poster every time two or more weights of the FS Emeric were purchased,” says Phil Garnham. “They’ve now become somewhat of a collector’s item in their own right.” Superfamily In the spirit of Univers, the original font superfamily, FS Emeric now comprises 22 Roman and italic typefaces overall, making it one of the most versatile and functional modern fonts across all kinds of media, as well as one of the most distinctive.

The type design for Impecunious JNL comes from the 1939 sheet music for "You Don't Know How Much You Can Suffer (Until You Fall in Love)". The name comes from another piece of sheet music, 1899's "Impecunious Davis" [a piece of late 19th century tripe demeaning Black Americans]. However, the word "impecunious" was intriguing. According to the website Merriam-Webster.com, the simple definition of impecunious means "having little or no money". Since we've all been in that spot at one time or another, it became a perfect font name. Impecunious JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

A minimal rounded typeface inspired by architecture and furniture detail drawings. The idea was to develop a font that would showcase precise radius corners at large formats and would also downsize to produce stylish body text. Details include 4 weights, a complete character set, manually edited kerning and Euro symbol.

Any typeface has two intrinsic elements that does´t work at the same levels, form and appearance. These peculiar visual behavior generate a wide range of graphics games. At reading level, we observe a uniform gray spot, but large bodies allows us to appreciate their shapes and counterforms. Milio takes this duality to offer unparalleled service in newsprint and magazine publishing, specially in small bodies but hard and formal cogency in titling. Its wide variety of weights, 10 in total, together with a slight condensation allows us to save space without losing legibility, even under poor printing conditions. Yefimov Serif is a contemporary serif face, with low contrast, squarish shapes of round glyphs and emphasized businesslike nature. It is one of the last original faces by Vladimir Yefimov. A pleasant Art Nouveau hand lettered title is featured on the sheet music cover for "You Brought A New Kind of Love to Me". The song is from the 1930 Paramount film "The Big Pond" featuring Maurice Chevalier and Claudette Colbert. The original lettering was done with a round point pen nib, and showed a lot of small inconsistencies. For the digital version it has been "tightened up" a bit and is now available as Nouveau Fashion JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

The hand lettered title on the cover of the 1932 sheet music for “I Wish We Could Dance Forever” was the inspiration for Dance Routine JNL. This bold Art Deco sans serif design is now available in both regular and oblique versions.

Lecturia is a modern humanist sans serif typeface. Ascending dynamic movement characterizes the structure of it’s characters -- the stylistic alternates emphasize this impression. The family comprises eight weights from the most delicate "Hairline" to the strong "Bold" -- each upright and italic. Using the variable font, the intermediate levels can be controlled fluently. The forms and proportions of Lecturia have been selected to be very legible as body type for longer texts. Lecturia ist still legible from a great distance or under unfavorable conditions. In large sizes as a heading, the font is very eye-catching. The shapes of the individual characters follow the "humanistic" form language of modern faces. In addition to ligatures for problematic letter combinations, it contains stylistic alternates for some characters that make the appearance even livelier.
