We wanted to make an ultra-thin, tall font with a rough, hand-drawn look and ended up with more than we bargained for. To get the font we wanted we started by developing a source font for the basic letter shapes and we ended up with a whole bunch of variations of the basic style. Thus was born the new Ducatus family of fonts, starting with Ducatus Light which developed into the Medium and Heavy versions, and the Medium weight was ultimately used as the basis for the Ducatus Rough font, which was the goal of the project in the first place. Ducatus Rough was created by modifying Ducatus Medium in Photoshop using Gallery Effects and several other filter packages, and then redoing the outlines from scratch in Fontographer. A lot of work, but the result is just what we wanted.

Originally designed by Morris Fuller Benton in 1925, FontHaus's 1995 revival is based on a design named "Novelty Broadway". Characters were referenced from "Commercial Art of Show Card Lettering" by James Eisenberg, published by D. Van Nostrand Company in 1945. This Broadway is classic Broadway but with some charming differences such as a slanted lower case "f" a remarkable lower case "g" and a high-waisted upper case case "R", as only a few examples. It was named "Novelty" because the alphabet incorporated a concave design feature in the tops and bottoms of each letter. These differences allow this version to possess much more personality than that of all other Broadway designs on the market. It looks almost hand brushed, has soft edges and is no where near as sterile looking as all the other digital versions. It feels very 1925!

In nautical folklore, the Flying Dutchman is a ship that can never go home and is doomed to sail the seas forever as a ghost ship. The story of the Dutchman appeared in print in the 1820s. With different versions written over the years, some date the legend to the 1640s or the early 1700s. The Flying Dutchman font is a revival of an 1876 font from MacKellar, Smiths & Jordan Co. The Truetype and OpenType formats include a larger extended character set with Central and Eastern European accented letters. Extra characters in this font are left and right pointing hands in place of the less than and greater than keys and a pirate flag is on the bracket keys. New to this style is the distressed version where the letters look like they've been hacked by a cutlass.

Dante was designed by Giovanni Mardersteig. Mardersteig started work on Dante after the Second World War when printing at the Officina Bodoni returned to full production. He drew on his experience of using Monotype Bembo and Centaur to design a new book face with an italic which worked harmoniously with the roman. Originally hand-cut by Charles Malin, Dante was adapted for mechanical composition by Monotype in 1957. The new digital font version has been re drawn, by Monotype's Ron Carpenter, free from any restrictions imposed by hot metal technology. The Dante font family was issued in 1993 in a range of three weights with a set of titling capitals. The initial inspiration for CA Spotnik was the opening title of an early Andrei Tarkovsky movie. There was this very unconventional hand drawn “s” which drew my attention. Despite its strange shape, it felt totally natural in that context. So we made a few screenshots and started to sketch some more letters in order to catch the spirit that attracted us so much. The result is a grotesque typeface with a slight contrast, the proportions are rather wide with a large x-height. The bolder the weight, the wider it gets. In case you find the swirly “s” uncomfortable, there is a standard s included as well. Designed by Nadine Chahine, the Amariya™ typeface family is intended for long form, on-screen textual content. It supports the Arabic, Persian and Urdu languages. The design is consistent with traditional text typeface models popular in the Middle East, but has a lower level of stroke contrast optimized for on-screen reading. The family is available in nine weights ranging from a light hairline to a very bold black. The middle weights are intended for setting text copy while the extreme hairline and black designs are best suited for headlines, sub heads and similar applications.
