The idea for Terra Ignota came to me years ago as I was admiring a reproduction of "Amerique Septentrionale," a 1650 map by French cartographer Nicolas Sanson, given to me by my parents. The handlettering has a sort of rakish character, evocative of pirates or adventurers at a time of unbridled world exploration. I ended up putting the project aside, but the idea to create this font tugged gently at my mind until I simply couldn't ignore it any longer. The resulting typeface has an italic slant and a deliberate feel, in keeping with its historical roots. Useful for simulating old hand-lettered documents. Has a full character set (and then some).

19th Century Retro is a re-design of an official German font style (called ‘Fraktur’) which was used in official documents in the 19th and early 20th century. There is an alternative small letter ‘s’ which you generate by typing the @ sign. This alternative letter was the original small letter s which was printed in the middle and at the beginning of a word originally (for example in the words ‘slightly’ and ‘best’). However, if the s was at the end, the normal small letter s was used (for example in the words ‘it's’ and ‘columns’). For readability reasons I decided to put the normal small letter s onto the s-key on your keyboard.

Sideroad is an intensive hand-drawn brush script font. It comes in two versions, Textured and Smooth. This font was inspired by one of a standard French manual styles in use from the beginning of 1900s to the end of World War II, when people were writing most often with pen holders and metal nibs. This typeface is easily legible as it was used for the lithographic printing of university textbooks. All lower cases from a to z and numerals from 0 to 9 are doubled by a slightly different one to allow a varying manual aspect in texts. In this font I drew the letters with a pen and or with just the index finger on a tablet, completely free, without improvement. The chaos ensuing. As if I was rushing notes just for me. This is the display version of Librum. Librum means “book” in Latin, which I thought was appropriate. Bream is Latin for proclaim—appropriate for display work. The fonts are very close to Librum-Book and Librum-Italic, with the same OpenType features. The glyphs are modified a bit to make them a little more elegant, but that’s not very noticeable. Mainly, the letterspacing and kerning is tighter and more carefully fit to large point sizes. As for classification, I like oldstyle, Venetian, geralde, English oldstyle. There’s discrete modulation, slanted crossbars, full brackets serifs of medium thickness and sharp cut ends.
