As a graphic designer, sometimes it’s impossible not to be inspired by the Swiss Style, specifically the work of Armin Hofmann, who is one of its best exponents. Grids and grotesk and neo-grotesk typefaces are a fundamental part of the tools that make this aesthetic possible. A visual language that has caused full admiration since we were students. Therefore, we decided to design Armin as an homage to Hofmann’s work. Technically, we added stylistic sets applied to the letters –G, R, a, g, h, l, m, n, r, t, u, y– to make Armin more eclectic and suitable for the creation of any visual language.

ITC Malstock is the work of Czech designer Frantisek Storm. The idea is based on a sign painting technique that uses a flat brush and a Maalstok, a long bar with soft padding which is used as a rest for the painter's hand and a guide for vertical lines. The strokes of this font end with a split stem which recalls the traces of the writer's brush. ITC Malstock is a narrow typeface which is ideal for headlines, invitations and advertisements. Banco was the first typeface work of French designer Roger Excoffon and was released in 1952. The strong forms look as though they were rolled out of sheet metal and feature upright, tapering strokes. The slight slant, the varying heights of stroke ends, and the relationships between line and curve give Banco font its sense of liveliness and dynamism. Excoffon did not design a matching lower case alphabet for his capitals, but this was accomplished later by Phill Grimshaw, who also designed the light weight. He deliberately 'underdesigned' the lower case forms, producing a more reserved alphabet based on the design ideas of the original.

Old Labels JNL was inspired by the red and white gummed labels that were used for shipping parcels long before self-adhesive materials and desktop publishing rendered the older labels obsolete. I set out to create a solid, bold, strong, rugged font, one that would lend itself to any industrial type of use, and by that I mean industry in general, but probably sectors that would still be considered male preserves such as carpentry or metalwork. I thought specifically of mortice & tenon joints, whilst toying with shape and form for this self imposed challenge. I was also visualizing a router tool used for producing most wood joints nowadays. I think the general premise worked out well; in the end I settled on the name Mortice, referring to the slots or negative spaces that the matching part, or tenon would fit into.

This new script font was based on our previous font ‘Rachele’. Mentha is a very flexible script with a big set of swashes, condensed, strong and with nice loops at the end of some letter shapes. Dez Yinznat Stencil is a condensed stencil sans serif inspired by the industrial city of Pittsburgh, PA USA. Stencil type was often used in the steel mills, scrap metal yards, railroads, warehouses, and other industrial institutions of Pittsburgh and is almost a signature for the City. The name comes from combining two colloquial expressions common to Pittsburgh. “Yinz” is used there like "Y'all" is used in Southern States. "n'at" or sometimes "N@" is used to replace “and that” when ending a phrase. This font is dedicated to the hard-working people who made Pittsburgh what it is, N@. Nürnberg (Nuremberg in eng.) New blackletter-sans font family in modern look with contrasts elements in six widths. Grafika is a completely original design, done in an “Art Deco” spirit reminiscent of the 1920s and ‘30s. I designed Grafika many years ago to be typeset for title cards, and both opening and end credits for the Merchant/Ivory feature film “Savages”. After the film, the design languished in my archives until I rediscovered it. I have digitally redrawn Grafika, completing it with all the alternates, ligatures, math, foreign accented characters and punctuation that weren’t required of the original design for film. Grafika is strongest when set in upper and lowercase—its unique caps extending below the baseline—although all caps settings are encouraged as well.

At times, one source of inspiration can generate more than one idea. This was the case with the 1918 sheet music for the song "You're Still an Old Sweetheart of Mine". The cover displays the title in a hand lettered narrow Art Nouveau Sans serif style. A number of characters were revised and the overall font was compressed by 25% to create a whole new look and feel. The end result became Slim Nouveau JNL. This was the same material used to originally model Easy Money JNL, which is truer to the original lettering design. The font is available in both regular and oblique versions.
