It’s Art Deco “thick and thin”… It’s wide… It’s quirky… It’s a hand lettered sign over the lanes of the Bryant-Lake Bowl – a landmark bowling alley in Minneapolis, Minnesota… and it was spotted in an amazing YouTube video from a “drone tour” of the facility! The sign inspired the font Pin Spotter JNL which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Conveyor Belt was designed for an environmental paper made from sugar cane waste called bagasse. The paper mill use conveyor belts to produce the paper from when the bagasse gets loaded to the finished paper product. This was the inspiration for this font. It has some alternatives to give options for different words linking different letters. This is a moving font and flowing.

Neverland is my attemp of a lettering font. I was inspired by the letters in displays of retaurants. It will work great in posters, shirts, magazines and displays because it has a charming feel. I received a lot of help from my good friend Maximiliano Sproviero (Lián Types). The name is based on the tale of Peter Pan from James Matthew Barrie.

The Dec., 1936 - Jan., 1937 edition of Radio Mirror offered up a condensed, hand lettered sans serif type design that - although an Art Deco style- is also somewhat futuristic in design. This is now available as Condensed Moderne JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

The opening credits to the original (1937) version of “A Star is Born” starring Janet Gaynor and Frederic March was hand lettered in an Art Deco style with rounded terminals that emulated the look of neon signage – alluding to the glitz and glamour of 1930s Hollywood. Screen Star JNL is the digital revival of that lettering, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

A beefy unicase flare serif typeface inspired by a Frank Kane pulp paperback of the same name. Dead Rite is filled with awkward comic personality, mixing Capital and lowercase forms into a pseudo-unicase format that is a joy to play. A recent walk down memory lane through old college sketchbooks revealed a collection of caricature fish doodles. Then the sketches were discovered by my son who, being a marine life enthusiast, promptly demanded that I draw more fish. Thus, a collection of 71 fish-inspired drawings and bubbly numbers was born. There is even a lemon, since no fish is really complete without one.

Be it a blessing or a curse, when a type designer sees a shape that could be interpreted as a letter, his/her mind is off and running. My parents loved to travel; Dad drove to Florida seven different years, winding on (barely) two-lane “highways” clinging to the hills of Kentucky and Tennessee. My brothers and I saw many of these letters along the way. Watch those Curves .

Zafrada features classic wedge serifs that can be sharp like a machete or round like molasses. Inspired in the sugar cane, this typeface brings great display legibility with versatile expressions. While the edgy version reminds us of classical rustic grotesk typefaces, the round version brightness the tone considerably. Inspired by the work of Hendrik van den Keere, Tobias Frere-Jones and David Berlow designed a family of typefaces focused on the challenges of newsprint publishing. This version of the family is part of the Reading Edge series of fonts specifically designed for small text onscreen, having been adjusted to provide more generous proportions and roomier spacing, and having been hinted in TrueType for optimal rendering in low resolution environments.

The 1888 edtion of James Conner's Sons United States Type Foundry specimen book listed this little gem simply as "Antique Light". Its original, rather anemic outlines have been beefed up and its serifs have been rounded, with the result that this face will get noticed wherever it goes. Both versions of this font include the complete Latin 1252 and CE 1250 character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

Loosely based on a Jan Tschichold specimen, Mere is a clean geometric sans-serif with simple lines that are best viewed as larger print but still have an impact at smaller point sizes. In addition to ligatures and fractions, Mere’s other OpenType features include old style numbers and small caps.

Morris Fuller Benton’s drawings at the Smithsonian show a creative concern for effects of scale on typeface design. Tobias Frere-Jones began with 4pt ATF Franklin Gothic drawings, modifying proportions to mix with Poynter Oldstyle and Benton Gothic, and adjusting ends of the curved strokes of C G S a c e r s to suit news printing conditions. The lettering found on an 1878 Salt Lake City advertisement for the Forepaugh’s Circus inspired Faux Pas JNL, which is a bit of a pun on the circus’ name and also a commentary on how this unusual lettering style seems to break all of the rules on stroke width and balance. According to Wikipedia: “Adam John Forepaugh (February 28, 1831 - January 22, 1890) was an American entrepreneur, businessman, and circus owner. Forepaugh owned and operated a circus from 1865 through 1890 under various names including Forepaugh's Circus, The Great Forepaugh Show, The Adam Forepaugh Circus, and Forepaugh & The Wild West. In 1889, Forepaugh sold his circus acts to James Anthony Bailey and James E. Cooper and he sold his railroad cars to the Ringling Brothers. The Ringlings used the equipment to transform their circus from a small animal-powered production to a huge rail-powered behemoth, which later purchased the Barnum & Bailey Circus. Thus, in liquidating his circus assets, he indirectly contributed to the demise of his arch-rival.” Faux Pas JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

In 1903, faced with the welter of sanserif typefaces offered by ATF, Morris Fuller Benton designed News Gothic, which became a 20th-century standard. In 1995 Tobias Frere-Jones studied drawings in the Smithsonian and started a redesign. Cyrus Highsmith reviewed News Gothic, and with the Font Bureau studio expanded it into Benton Sans, a far-reaching new series, with matched weights and widths, offering performance well beyond the limits of the original; FB 1995-2012

Agis is a modern geometric sans-serif family by Cloud9 Type Dept's Jani Paavola. The whole family consists of 5 weights from ExtraLight to Bold. At the end of the 1931 gangster film “The Public Enemy” a hand lettered card offers up an afterword on the demise of Tom Powers (James Cagney’s character in the film) and how a “public enemy” is neither a man nor a character but a problem society must deal with. The text is in an Art-Deco influenced sans serif, and has been digitally recreated as Afterword JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Irena is a cubist/expressionist font inspired by Vojtěch Preissig. Preissig (1873-1944) was a Czech typographer, printmaker, illustrator and teacher, whose work was influenced by Japanese Art and Symbolism. During WWII, Preissig supported the Czech resistance and he was arrested in 1940. He died on June 11th in Dachau concentration camp. This font was named after his daughter Irena Bernášková. The Irena font is angular and square(ish), yet easy to read. It comes with extensive language support.

Bitblox fonts are based on the lettering created for Glyfyx’ eponymous wooden alphabet blocks. The characters are inspired by the low-res bitmap lettering seen on early generation computer devices.
