Another jewel of the vast treasure of historical font designs was digged out and brought to life again. Due to the courtesy of the Quay Brothers, London, who yielded to me an age-old brochure of Albert Auspurg’s ‚Miami‘, released by Schriftguss in 1934, I was able to redesign this elegant font. This font which I called ‚Elbflorenz‘, a cognomen for Dresden, contains West and Central European type faces as well as those for Romanian and Turkish. To get access to the historical number sign please use either the OT feature additional ligatures or ordinals.

Tre Giorni, is a variant of the "Due Giorni" font with the possibility of combining between the two. This useful writing font is very expressive, fresh, agile and organic. For more than 70 years the 10-foot tall letters displaying the word FOSHAY have illuminated the Foshay Tower in the Minneapolis skyline. However, the typestyle has never been made into a font before. This new modern font family, dubbed Fosho Book, is optimized for book print usage as well as functioning as big bold display type on screen. The Fosho fonts are available in three styles: Outlines, Dotted Bulb Inlines and Composite with both. You can use the three styles in overlapping colors for dramatic chromatic effects.

Ornamented scripts are a Koziupa/Paul specialty, and Heraldica is one of their most expressive. It attains the very definition of deluxe by conjoining the classic thin-and-thick script treatment with thin-only counterpart strokes, then it goes the extra mile with a varied complement of overlaid flourishes. Nat Grotesk family consists of 14 styles including 6 narrow ones. It has a half-closed sans serif design with simple and clear lettershapes. Due to compact proportions the face is very space saving, but nevertheless it is rather legible even in small sizes. The bold weights demonstrate increased contrast. The font is recommended for text and display typography as well as for headlines and advertising. It was designed by Natalia Vasilyeva and released by ParaType in 2007. The upgraded version with extended character set was released in 2009.

Angel Koziupa's familiar brush goes upright and narrow with Pinguino. Koziupa's approach to condensed brush fonts makes use of the same elements that have always distinguished his calligraphy from any other. With Pinguino, however, we see him softening his corners and adding a distinctly feminine touch to his exotic brush. Pinguino would feel at home on sobering coffee packaging just as it would on a bouncy mixed-fruit juice bottle. Try Pinguino for your next packaging project, and tell your client an Angel told you to use it.

An early drawing tablet was largely responsible for the LeakorLeach typefaces. They resemble hand lettering using cake icing or done with an ink pen that leaves lots of ink blobs or ink blots. The family has two widths, plain and condensed, and in addition to each having an oblique style, each also has a leftward-inclined style. There may not be many uses for a leftward-inclined typeface, but for those needing one, the LeakorLeach family offers two. The LeakorLeach typefaces are unlike any other faces from IngrimayneType.

ITC Mudville was Christopher Wolff's entry in the 1998 U&lc Type Design Competition, for which he won an Honorable Mention (Display). Mudville evolved from variations on hand-lettering that Wolff had done on a variety of projects over the years. The underlying shapes of the letters are formal roman letterforms, but the actual strokes retain the look of letters sketched casually on a layout. Mudville straddles the line between inline and outline type designs. It recalls some of the styles of popular lettering used in display advertising in the '20s.

Addressotype is based on lettering from a vintage ad for the Addressograph-Multigraph Corporation, manufacturers of the Addressograph addressing machine. In days when the U.S. postal service delivered everything, mailing addresses were as important as email addresses are today. The Addressograph machines stamped out dog-tag-like plates that were used to print mailing labels at high volume. Embodying the company’s work ethic and durability, Addressotype recalls the gaspipe form of lettering popular in the 30s and 40s, updated to reflect the “streamlining” trend popular during the period.

AggressIan is the release of the first font I ever drew. It was done by hand with triangle and parallel rule back in the mid-1980s. I originally called it Aggressor, but I never liked it. My local type designer friend, Ian Roberts, really likes this type of drawing and told me I had to release it. So I named it after him. The small caps should work well if you need a bolder version. It has oldstyle and lining figures, plus the small cap figures. I hope you like it.

Roman-style stencil fonts have been around for much longer than most people realize - from the interlocking brass stencils of the 1880s to the laser-cut plastic stencils of today. A 1 inch Roman lettering guide [die-cut from oil board with spacing holes for correct alignment] made by the now-defunct Zipatone Corporation in the 1970s was a clone of an existing design of another company; but with variations in certain character shapes. This then became the working model for Classroom Stencil JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

I like playing around with brushes and Chinese ink. I always have some kind of idea of what the final design should look like, but once it’s done, it never ever looks like what I had in mind. Apex Brush is one of those designs: it started off as a few brush strokes, but before I knew it, I had a really nice set of matching brush fonts! Use it for any design that needs a bit of rough, a splash of ink and a pinch of rebel.

MVB Peccadillo is an interpreted revival of a metal typeface popular in the 19th Century, then known as Skeleton Antique. Highly condensed with extra short descenders, the face makes a big impact in a narrow space. Holly Goldsmith worked from letterpress-printed specimens of 96-point, antique metal type, deliberately retaining subtle distortions due to type wear and letterpress impression. Alan Dague-Greene, referring to printed samples of Skeleton Antique, adapted the design to create two additional optical sizes: “Eight” for smaller text and “Twenty-four” for subheads.

A 1963 movie poster for an Italian documentary called “Sexy Nudo” had its title lettering in a free form spur serif design reminiscent of cut paper. This inspired Winkle Picker JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. Despite the subject matter of the film documentary, the lettering on the poster is fun and playful, which meant the digital font deserved a fun name as well. It was named for a shoes and boots with sharp and long pointed toes which first gained popularity in the 1950s.

An offbeat typeface inspired by the lettering on an art poster by Patrick Owsley for the cartoon character Hoppity Hooper. This typeface goes beyond the basic opentype features you've seen (i.e. extended language character sets, stylistic alternate character variations, etc) and offers not only a ligature feature that automatically alternates between the Capitals & Lowercase (Alt Capitals) sets, but also a unique Contextual Alternates feature that enables an automatic alternating BOUNCING effect. All this piled into a single typeface with loads of personality, just waiting to be played with!

Architype Ingenieur was inspired by Wim Crouwel’s late 1950s exhibition catalogues and posters, for which he had created a few geometrically constructed, simplified letterforms. In the 1960 Venice Biennale Dutch entry poster, he drew grid-based letters with 45-degree angles for ‘olanda’, the style influenced by his boyhood fascination with naval lettering. A subtle variation appeared in the Stedelijk Museum catalogue for painter Jean Brusselmans. Several dot matrix versions followed. The themes and systems in these early letterforms are encapsulated in this new four weight family Architype Ingenieur.

Boldstrom is a heavy-handed, all caps, display font available in 5 versions. Emphasis was put into strong line weight, minimal contrast, and tight curves. This family is defined by very broad stems with comparatively thinner cross strokes. Spacing was condensed to ensure the characters fit snug against one another. This was done in part to minimize negative space while also creating tension. The result is a powerful looking sans serif designed to command attention and make a statement. The Xavier family of typefaces is based on the delightful deco typeface called Ashley Crawford, originally designed in 1930 by Ashley Havinden. After designing Xavier Black (Serif) and Xavier Sans Black, I added Bold Sans, Medium and Medium Sans and finally added lowercase to the medium weights. Although more manageable than Ashley Crawford, Xavier, due to its very playful nature (splayed A, M, etc.) needs to be used with care, especially in terms of spacing. Xavier is a playful typeface and I have been particularly pleased to see it used in children's books.

Biffo was designed by David Marshall and produced in 1964. The alphabet in handwritten style has the character of writing done with a broad tipped pen. The figures are round and flexible, even its vertical strokes have rounded edges, softening the look of the characters. The basic forms show parallels with a pear shape: generous in the lower third and thinning out as they move upward. Tiemann Antiqua was designed by Walter Tiemann in 1923 and appeared with the Klingspor font foundry. It is one of the modern book typefaces created in the first half of the 20th century, but differed from most in its Modern Face forms. It displays the same strong stroke contrast and flat serifs but its proportions have more in common with those of neorenaissance fonts. Tiemann Antiqua is an elegant, legible font suitable for books and longer texts, but also found in headlines, newspapers and magazines due to its classic yet unusual appearance.

Cooper Black The Cooper Black font should be used in display sizes only. Cooper Blacks serifs are rounded and the counters are small. Cooper Black was designed by Oswald B. Cooper for Barnhart Brothers & Spindler in 1921 for advertising and posters. The capital O and Q of the Cooper Black font are tilted back; in the lowercase, the dot on the I and j become elliptical. The extra bold Cooper Black font has a remarkable personality and reproduces well in sizes over 18 point in titles, subheadings and generally short sentences.

Page Wood Type Company and was sold to the Hamilton Manufacturing Company of Two Rivers, Wisconsin in 1891. 508 is a heavy all-caps font designed for headline work. It has a strong presence that reverses out well (light-colored type on a dark background). Great for retro style posters.
