British designer Bob Newman's Horatio family is a delightful look back into the modernists experiments of the 1920s. A “latin” alphabet modelled on the ethiopian Ge'ez script - an experiment that works. Amhara was created by transferring the typical forms of the Ethiopian Amharic script to the west European alphabet. Because Amharic is traditionally written with an expanded pen tip, it shows the typical ductus also characteristic of the uncial scripts of late antiquity and the early Middle Ages. So this font »Amhara« has a somewhat sacramental effect. And, although the individual forms look foreign, the overall picture is strangely familiar. Gelato Fresco represents a coming-of-age of a script font that started life in 2011 as the popular Gelato Script. Named after the steadfast doctor from Albert Camus’ The Plague, Rieux is an even-tempered slab-serif that is confident without being cocky and approachable without being casual. The aesthetic of Rieux is inspired by the industrial age. While the design is not directly derived from typefaces of that era, the shapes of letter-forms are informed by images of over-sized steel machines and the monolithic brick buildings that housed them. The Neuzeit Office family is designed after the model of the original sans serif family Neuzeit S™ , which was produced by D. Stempel AG and the Linotype Design Studio in 1966. Neuzeit S itself was a redesign of D. Stempel AG’s DIN Neuzeit, created by Wilhelm Pischner between 1928 and 1939. Intended to represent its own time, DIN Neuzeit must have struck a harmonious chord. DIN Neuzeit is a constructed, geometric sans serif. It was born during the 1920s, a time of design experimentation and standardization, whose ethos has been made famous by the Bauhaus and De Stijl movements in art, architecture, and design. Upon its redesign as Neuzeit S in the 1960s, other developments in sans serif letter design were taken into account. Neuzeit S looks less geometric, and more gothic, or industrial. Separating it from typefaces like Futura, it has a double-storey a, instead of a less legible, single-storey variant. Unlike more popular grotesque sans serifs like Helvetica, Neuzeit S and especially the redesigned Neuzeit Office contain more open, legible letterforms. Neuzeit Office preserves the characteristic number forms that have been associated with its design for years. After four decades, Neuzeit has been retooled once again, and it is more a child of its age than ever before. Akira Kobayashi, Linotype’s Type Director, created the revised and updated Neuzeit Office in 2006. His greatest change was to retool the design to make its performance in text far more optimal. Additionally, he created companion oblique to help emphasize text.

Kontrast Grotesk represents a contrast in type design based on a different principle. It was inspired by W. A. Dwiggins and his experiments with the stroke variations. Contrast in this typeface is created not only with the influence of the writing tool (the thickness of horizontal strokes in relation to vertical), but by setting the primary and secondary construction strokes of the characters (e.g. glyph “E”). Aptifer Sans and Aptifer Slab are two 21st century typeface families created by Mårten Thavenius. Each family has seven weights, in roman and italic respectively, making 28 font styles in total. A heritage from two design traditions can be seen in Aptifer. One is the robust American gothic typefaces, like M. F. Benton’s, from around 1900. The design of Sabon® Next by Jean François Porchez, a revival of a revival, was a double challenge: to try to discern Jan Tschichold´s own schema for the original Sabon, and to interpret the complexity of a design originally made in two versions for different typecasting systems. The first was designed for use on Linotype and Monotype machines, and the second for Stempel hand composition. Because the Stempel version does not have the constraints necessary for types intended for machine composition, it seems closer to a pure interpretation of its Garamond ancestor. Naturally Porchez based Sabon Next on this second version and also referred to original Garamond models, carefully improving the proportions of the existing digital Sabon while matching its alignments. The new family is large and versatile - with Roman and italic in 6 weights from regular to black. Most weights also have small caps, Old style Figures, alternates (swashes, ligatures, etc); and there is one ornament font with many lovely fleurons. The standard versions include revised lining figures that are intentionally designed to be a little smaller than capitals. This script font was inspired by the type used in Leyden by Jan Seversz to print Breviores elegantioresque epistolae [...], author Francesco Filfelo, circa 1509. The original font contains all lower case characters, except w, eth, thorn, lslash, oslash and so... and almost upper case. In addition, one set of small lombardic initials were also nearly complete. It take place instead of the Bold style (in only one package)offering a real and rare complete historical printing set... The original small "a" hight was 2,8 mm !, the upper case hight no more than nearly 5 mm, the initials hight almost 15 mm, covering nearly two lines. This font includes "long s", naturally, as typically medieval and also a few ligatures, but not any variants. We have entirely recreated some characters, upper, lower and initials, to fill gaps. It is used as variously as web-site titles, posters and fliers design, publishing texts looking like ancient ones, or greeting cards, all various sorts of presentations, menus, certificates, as a very decorative, elegant and unusual font, besides its historical scrupulous reality... This font supports enlargement as well as small size.
