It's nice when a font provides old style figures, small caps and alternate letters. But what if my typesetting program doesn't support Open Type features? The solution may be old-fashioned, but it's effective: the variants are placed in separate font families: Standard, Old Style Figures (OSF), and Small Caps (SC). Any word processor can handle it. Sticky Annie is the latest in the series of fonts I've designed that are named after my wife. Little bundles of overlapping sticks or lines make up each character. It's made to look good at small font sizes, but the bigger, the better. At small sizes it's fun and a little childish. At bigger sizes, especially in all-caps, it looks intricate, distinctive and stately.

SQUADZONE it’s a young & sportive unicase style font, having both uppercase and a few smallcase alternating letters that gives it a unique look. It’s geometric anathomy of the letters may have two different types of endings or detail: straight and sharp cut out angles at 45 degrees. I've had mixed feelings about Kabel; It is a brilliant headline font with a lot of character, but it's the characters I have problems with. The versions of all big foundries have the same flaws (in my opinion), especially lowecase a and s. So I finally went ahead and made an all new version. It is not Kabel, but very much like it. It has unique x-height, weight and width, and many individual characters are also different from the original.

With Open Type savvy programs this font automatically replaces single characters with the ligatures. Some hand kerning is needed here and there.

Choriza is a multilayered font and a kind of spicy spanish sausage. With three layers you can colour any salami, salchichen, sausage, wurst or pudding. It’s surprising - it can take more time and effort to make something deliberately and artfully imperfect than it does to make a more conventional design. We certainly found this to be the case when designing ‘SpeedSketch’. Perhaps a more accurate name would have been ‘SlowDraw’ but that wouldn’t really capture the essence of the finished design.

LIETZ Germion draws inspiration from viennese jugendstil scripts. It features strong geometric figures but with a scruffy handwritten poster-look and a distressed feel. Zuider Postduif was my very first font design 3 years ago and I decided to remake and extend it including the Cyrillic alphabet and some OpenType features. Ebdus is a thin, modern, lightweight font, occasionally a little gawky and tall, sometimes a little plump and rounded. The font is available in 5 weights from Thin to Heavy but they all lean towards all things anorexia. It looks as good in copy as it does in headlines, it’s perfect for an angry letter to an uppity android.

In an 1896 specimen catalog for American Type Founders there is a design called Geometric Gothic. The lettering style looks as if it’s ahead of its time; foreseeing the 1980s. With its squared characters, some pointed overhangs and modified character shapes, this type design is now available as Squared Off JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.
