Inspired by an image of the chamfered block lettering of a semi-faded “ghost sign” for the Thomas Drug Co. in Thomas, Oklahoma, Local Druggist JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions. “Ghost Signs” are the visible remnants of hand-painted signs on buildings where the original business had long closed or moved, yet the lettering had survived the passing years.

A whimsical semi-script typeface named Belcanto, designed by Edwin Sisty for Photolettering in the 1970s, provided the pattern for this typeface. The Bauer Typefoundry first released the Beton family of types in 1936. Created by the German type designer Heinrich Jost, the present digital version of the Beton family consists of six slab serif typefaces. First developed during the early 1800s, by the 1930s slab serif faces had become one of many stock styles of type developed by foundries all over the world. Because of their distance from pen-drawn forms and their industrial appearance, they were seen as “modern” typefaces. (Their serifs kept them from being too modern.) The first slab serif typefaces were outgrowths of didone style text faces (e.g., Walbaum). As newspapers and advertising grew in importance in the western world (especially in “Wild West” America), type founders and printers began to create bigger, bolder typefaces, which would set large headlines apart from text, and each other. Through display tactics, businesses and industry could begin to visually differentiate their products from one another. This craze eventually led to the development of monster sized wood type, among other things. By the 20th Century, the typographic establishment had begun to tame, categorize, and codify 19th Century type styles. It was in the wake of this environment that Jost developed Beton. The Beton family is a type “family” in a pre-1950s sense of the word. Although six styles of type are available, only four of them fit in logical progression with each other (Beton Light, Beton Demi Bold, Beton Bold, and Beton Extra Bold). The other two members of the family, Beton Bold Condensed and Beton Bold Compressed, are more like distant cousins. They function better as single headlines to text set in Beton Light or Beton Demi Bold, of as companions to totally separate typefaces.

The inspiration source for Semicirculus Monogram is a stylish sans serif letterset from a vintage embroidery publication which combines to create a semi-circular form monogram. Originally intended to adorn handkerchiefs, it has so many other possibilities. Ornaments from numerous antique specimen books were combined with the letter set to accent and complete its form. This is one of many monogram designs for the early 1900s which fall into a two letter format that is either adorned or interwoven with ornamentation. Urbane Adscript is a script companion to Urbane. A monoline semi-linking sans, it has the same number of weights and the same cap height and x-height as the Urbane family, meaning the two can be used together harmoniously. It features swash capitals that can be toggled on or off in the Opentype panel, or chosen individually from the Glyphs menu according to taste. Almost every capital has a swash alternate, and many have two. In Adobe Illustrator, the more decorative swash can be found under “swash”, the less decorative as an alternate. BetterKamp was originally constructed in 1995-6. It was not constructed to meet any specific purpose but out of curiosity, to see what the result would be if two quite different faces were blended. KampIngriana is the offspring of BetterTypeRight, which has characteristics of a typewriter face without the monospacing, and KampFriendship, which mimics a serifed face drawn by hand. The original blending had many oddities that I did not clean up until 2020 when I also added the semi-bold weights. BetterKamp lacks polish and elegance, but it is very readable at small point sizes.

After searching through many sources, he turned to the drawings of the original column lettering made by Frederic Goudy in 1936. Btoxina is a free interpretation of the theme pixel font. With its technological feeling, it reflects the spirit of our age. By designing the font Filippo Salmina, the author, has been inspired by the signage used in starships. Btoxina is grid-based but it differs from classical screen fonts by the use of diagonal lines. It is characterized by the renouncement of the use of capital letters in favor of using negative letters and by the automatic generation of ligatures. Vintage Price Tags JNL comprises three sets of numbers in both ribbon, circle and star patterns which, when combined will produce point-of-sale price elements. The designs were re-drawn from examples found in an old wood type catalog, and are now collected in digital format. Ribbon-style numbers are found on the upper case keys. A through J have the large numbers, K through T are the smaller, underlined numbers. The remaining upper case keys contain the dollar sign, cents sign and the phrases "each", "for", "dozen" and "pair". On the lower case, the circle set of combination numbers are on the following keystrokes: The keys a through j are the left side semi-circle numbers and the "k" key is a blank left side semi-circle. The l through u keys are the right side semicircle numbers and the "v" keystroke is a blank right side semi-circle. The star set is on the standard numbers keys for the left side of the star, with the right side characters on the corresponding shift keystrokes for the number keys. In following the original design examples, a cents sign follows the numbers on the right side of the circle or star sets. The lower case w through z contain a left side star blank, a left side star with $1, a right side star blank and a right side star with small double zeros (to comprise a star shaped price tag for $1.00).

The Tangential style I envisaged for the family is complemented by the prominent use of negative space throughout, most apparent on the drop-shaped ‘o,’ which is a key feature of the typeface and a letterform I'm particularly pleased with. AM Siola is designed as a pure display font. The starting point for this type design was a customized logotype. Logotypes usually just need the design of some characters to form a harmonious, individual lettering. Obviously, it is much more difficult to create a complete font on the basis of just a few characters. The semi-serifs partly running in the opposite direction form the basic idea for this font. AM Siola can well be used for packaging design, logo design and individual headlines for anything from advertising to posters.

A casual semi-connected script, Eubie Script’s letterforms rise and drop to create surprising word shapes, helped by position-specific ligatures and contextual alternates. With tenacious rhythm and dynamic connections, Eubie Script gives power to your headings and overlays. To meet its design goals, Eubie Script draws from the many lettering styles of Harry Knorr, an artist at Globe Poster for over 50 years.
