My family and I recently bought a fixer-upper farm from the 1930 and I have been renovating and building for the last three+ months. I have a lot on my mind (as you can imagine), so I write little notes to keep track of what I need to do. Of course, since I’m often in the middle of something that needs to be done NOW, these notes are kind of messy. Shirah 25 started as a freehand study, while experimenting with ink and new nibs. Later on, when David decided to have a digital version, he drew it merely with the tablet, trying to keep the spirit of the ink and the nib. Shirah 25 is an OpenType/TTF Unicode font.

Massimo is a semi-serif geometric type family. For as long as I can remember, I've admired the visual style of New York – its architecture, fashion, design, and typography. After spending two weeks in Manhattan this summer, I wanted to prepare a sharp and modern typeface in Big Apple style.

This typeface is based on ISO 3098, a technical documentation issued in 1974 by ISO (International Organization for Standardization), which proposed a set of characters for use on technical drawings and associated documents. Isotext is based on the original standards but is completely redesigned to fit typographic requirements. This new ‘Pro’ version is further improved and now comes with a complete set of redesigned true-italics. Furthermore, the width of the glyphs has increased in order to establish a more balanced and readable text. The result is a contemporary font which works well in small sentences as well as long texts. Isotext Pro is loaded with all the good stuff a designer needs to create documents with attitude. It supports 19 special OpenType features like small caps, fractions, ordinals, etc. and offers multilingual support for all European languages including Greek and Cyrillic. Plantin is a Renaissance Roman as seen through a late–industrial-revolution paradigm. Its forms aim to celebrate fine sixteenth century book typography with the requirements of mechanized typesetting and mass production in mind. How did this anomalous design come about? In 1912 Frank Hinman Pierpont of English Monotype visited the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, returning home with “knowledge, hundreds of photographs, and a stack of antique typeset specimens including a few examples of Robert Granjon’s.” Together with Fritz Stelzer of the Monotype Drawing Office, Pierpont took one of these overinked proofs taken from worn type to use as the basis of a new text face for machine composition. Body text set in Plantin produces a dark, rich texture that’s suited to editorial and book work, though it also performs its tasks on screen with ease. Now here's a font with an unusual backstory. You may recall that a while ago we discovered that Tim Burton was using an outdated version of one of our fonts for the interior titles in his The Corpse Bride. Well, our quest to get hold of him didn't bear any immediate fruit, but in a totally unrelated event we were contacted by the graphic arts company working with the overseas distributors for The Corpse Bride and it turned out that they needed a font based on the main title of the movie so they could keep the same style when they retitled it into other languages. The original title was either hand lettered or a heavily modified font, bearing some resemblance to our Ligeia and Tuscarora fonts, so we had to create a whole font more or less from scratch and extrapolate most of the letters from the very limited sample in the original title by identifying certain consistent characteristics and building new characters around them. It was a lot of work, but the good news is that they didn't want exclusivity, so we've got the font to add to our collection. We ended up calling it Beynkales which means 'Bone Bride' in Yiddish, which makes sense given the context of the movie. So here it is, in all its tattered glory, and bound to end up in our Halloween font selection later this year as well. Beynkales Alternate is a companion font that includes a full set of alternative upper and lower case characters which can be used on their own or in combination with the characters from Beynkales to create a more varied and handwritten look.
