Stradivarius, sometimes known as Symphonie was designed by Hungarian born Imre Reiner (1900-1987). Reiner was not only a type designer, he was a fine artist. He enjoyed sculpture, painting, graphic and industrial design. In 1921, F. H. Ernst Schneidler, (Schneidler Initials) introduced Reiner to type design. Stradivarius was designed and first released by the Bauer Type Foundry in 1938.

In 1931, Morris Fuller Benton created the Stymie typeface for the American Type Founders (ATF). Stymie is a reworking of a slab serif type that was popular in Europe at that time, Memphis. For the past one hundred fifty years, slab serif types (sometimes called Egyptian or Egyptienne-style faces) have been a popular choice for headline text in newspapers, magazines, and advertising.

Museum Borders and Ornaments is part of a typographical treasure, the Norstedts type collection in Sweden. Type designer Torbjörn Olsson has painstakingly translated the original 34 Ornament matrices in the collection to Open Type. Among them are several of Granjon's arabesques, as well as symbols from both Swedish and Danish typefoundries. The signs were cut in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Welcome Amica Pro, a workhorse sans designed to give your branding a friendly, approachable look. What is it that makes a typeface friendly? Eclectotype undertook extensive research* in this and the results are in! To cut a long story short, friendliness in sans serif fonts can be summed up in two words – short and fat. Basically, think Danny DeVito in letter form. The shortness in Amica Pro is achieved (somewhat counterintuitively) by pushing up the x-height. This, coupled with short ascenders and descenders, gives the text a squat appearance. For the fatness, that's easy in the bolder weights, but how to carry this through to the lights? Here, the fatness equates to roundness, so the letterforms, even if the stroke weight is light, have a rotund appearance from the wideness and roundness of the circular glyphs. When thinking about friendliness, we think about inclusiveness. To this end, Amica Pro supports a super wide range of latin-based languages, as it uses Underware's Latin Plus character set, as well as extra support for Vietnamese. Amica Pro is best used for branding, logos, infographics etc. It will give your UI a friendlier feel, but that doesn't mean it's not serious. There are many useful typographic features, including alternates, numerous figure styles, automatic fractions and case-sensitive forms. The italics are carefully optically corrected "sloped romans" and as such they are the same width as their upright equivalent, so changing your copy to italics will not mess around with the spacing. *I looked at a few fonts and drew some lazy conclusions.

The Monotype Janson font family is based on types originally cut by the Hungarian punch-cutter, Nicolas Kis circa 1690. Named after Anton Janson, a Dutch printer. The original matrices came into the hands of the Stempel foundry in Germany in 1919. New type was cast and proofs made; these were used as the source for Monotype's version of Janson. The original hand cut Janson types have a number of small design irregularities which give the typeface its unique charm. These have been carefully incorporated into the new version. The overall effect is of even color and an easy readability that makes Monotype Janson most at home in book and publishing work.

When I released the original Organic in 2009, I was satisfied with it. It was what was possible from me and the technology at the time. The Organic Pro of 2021 takes those original desires of delivering a highly legible and friendly sans serif, and doubles down on those notions, while exploring what further infusing warmth in a highly structured sans serif can really do for a client. Free of distracting and potentially dating visual traits and cues that could be seen as endemic of a specific time period or ‘type trend’, Organic Pro is its own person—take it or leave it. Inviting warmth, assured reliability, and a head nod of confidence is what you walk away with—a stark contrast to the cold, impersonal geometrics and grotesques proliferating the design annuals currently. Releasing this typeface now, completely redrawing the masters, as well as expanding the weight and language options, should be seen as a laid back challenge that we need to do less with type, let it communicate confidently and warmly when it needs to, and stop forcing one-size-fits-all type trends on everyone.

Linotype Afrika, from German type designer Jörg Herz, is part of the TakeType Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contest 1999 for inclusion on the TakeType 3 CD. Linotype Agogo is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. Designed by British artist Ed Bugg, the font is reminiscent of the elegant 1920s and 1930s. It is a calligraphy font with five weights, one regular and four swash. The regular weight alone is clear and legible enough even for longer texts, although when used with swash characters, the texts should be shorter or headlines.

A contemporary interpretation of grotesque (historic) typestyle, relying on geometric shapes applied to a grid. Idiosyncrasies within the typeface are based on how this grid is constructed and applied rather than those inherent in drawing type with a pen or cutting from a block of wood. Other grot types retain the quirks of original woodcut typefaces. Elephant has a different vocabulary of quirks that remove it from being too reverential or constrained to a historic context.

Jaroslav is a typeface that breaks down typical assumptions on the construction of a monolinear grotesque, but still maintains excellent readability and the recognizability of individual characters. The sensitively-balanced type family of five weights is accompanied by a distinctive italic, so it works well with both expressive titles as well as shorter texts. This is why all weights include small caps, nine types of figures, alternatives, a large number of ligatures, arrows and other ornaments.

PT Quadrat Grotesk™ was designed for ParaType in 2001 by Vladimir Pavlikov. An expanded sans serif with square letterforms due to what the face was named. Based on the shapes of one of old Russian wooden types. Wooden types were used for placard display composition at large sizes. Their printouts retained wooden texture and traces of handling. These features are reflected in the shapes of Quadrat Grotesk. It is a good typeface for display and advertising typography.

The hand composition typeface was created at Polygraphmash type design bureau in 1959 by a well-known Soviet book and type designer Pavel Kuzanyan (1901-1992). It was reproduced in the 1960s for slugcasting and machine display composition. Sharp contrast, strong weight, slightly condensed Modern Serif with calligraphic elements. The typeface is useful in text and display composition, in scientific, fiction and art books. The revised and completed digital version was designed at ParaType in 2002 by Lyubov Kuznetsova.

Calligraphic Griffo comes from my personal interpretation of Francesco Griffo works. He was one Italian's type founder, punch cutter and type designer and the first who drawn and realize the typographical's punch of the italics around the 1500. His dedication to works and incredible perfection make me fall in love with his typefaces. A Western Union telegram from 1951 provided the typographic inspiration for Message by Wire JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. Unlike other available type fonts which emulate the ink ribbon-struck printed characters from the teletype machines, this version was redrawn to celebrate the actual type design itself. The typeface letter spacing has been equalized so that when in use, it looks much like the printed output of an old telegram messsage.
