Sleeve Notes: A font from the analogue age. Inspired by album covers and hand-written song lyrics. Sleeve Notes is an experimental script font and all-caps pair with a loose hand-written style that explores the golden-age of record stores, vinyl albums, cassettes and CDs. It imagines our teenage selves kicking back with a coke (oversized headphones on) discovering a new band and studying the notes on their latest album. Besides production credits, the best sleeves (otherwise known as liner notes) included photos, cool artwork and hand-written song lyrics that gave the listener a human connection to the mind of the artist. Majora is a slab serif typeface which derives its name from a Portuguese historical toy manufacturer. Gutter Pigeon is not your every-day Ransom-kind-of-font! The prices of making it was really simple: I only used my phone and computer. I took pictures of letter from newspapers, magazines, bookcovers, candybars, movieposters, roadsigns, etc. In the beginning, It was easy to find new letters. But as I had the initial letters, it became quite a search for the missing letters. Not a hard job, you may think - but this font has 8 different versions of each letter! That's 26 lowercase glyphs and 26 uppercase glyphs...8 times! That's more than 400 glyphs! And on top of that comes numbers and punctuation! Go crazy with Gutter Pigeon! Actually, that is not very hard, because the font automatically cycles through the 8 different versions of each letter while you type! Upper- and lowercase in a wild mix!

As with any attempt at a new typeface, you want to create something different. A difficult task as most legible fonts are based on something previous. Somatype isn't actually based on any particular font but it has unavoidable similarities to others. The important difference here being the distinctive quirk of the connection points going opposite to the norm; exemplified best by the lower case d & e. Once devised, the unique characteristic was applied wherever possible, keeping the rest of the characters in a sympathetic, rounded style. I first designed this in the light weight version, seeing it working best as a large open display font for magazines etc. but realized it would be too light for body copy at small scale, so, medium and bold weights were created to resolve that issue. Incidentally, the word ‘somatype’ literally means body-type.

Life’s always more fun when you reverse the stress. The same goes for the new member of the Cabrito family. Cabrito itself is a recently developed slab serif made for the kid’s book The Clothes Letters Wear. Cabrito proved to be more popular than I thought, and I promised I would create an inverted style for this new addition to the font world--a variant that would pair well with the original or even stand well on its own. And so now, here it is. Cabrito Inverto, which features the reversed stress of the strokes from a font’s “normal” traits. Inverted stress fonts are most often associated with cowboys and the Old West. The inverted stress gives it a happy-go-lucky appearance, not to be taken too seriously.
