Cypher is a techno looking font that attempts to employ the Gestalt principal of closure. It may, at larger sizes look like some sort of code or a bunch of dots and dashes, but when viewed at smaller sizes it falls together into legible words. This font family was first inspired by an experiment to try to make a legible upper and lower alphabet with the smallest grid possible that would still describe the letterforms. The original conclusion was that it could be done in a 3x6 grid. This made a fun design exercise, but it makes a lousy font. The grid was expanded a bit for aesthetic reasons to a 3x8 grid, But not restricted so severely and so occasionally goes wider than 3 for the certain letterforms. From this a whole family of widths and weights was born, and rather than simply obliquing for italics, a true italic of sorts was created. Cypher is a versatile family of 24 fonts – 4 widths, each with 3 weights and their accompanying italics.

The letterforms of Rialto dF were drawn directly in digital format with a starting point deriving from humanistic letterforms memorized in the hearts, minds and the manual ability of its designers… As tradition demands, uppercase, numerals and punctuation are used in combination with italics – the same solution adopted by Francesco Griffo when he cut his first italic for the Virgil, the first of the octavo series printed and published in Venice by Aldus Manutius in 1501. While there can be similar handwriting styles out there, no two handwritings are exactly the same. I like to think that I have the same handwriting style as my father, but I had never seen him write with lowercase letters, only in all capitals, except when signing his name on something in cursive. I recently came across a letter my father had written long ago to a friend. It was returned to sender, yet he kept it intact. The letter primarily thanked his friend for his hospitality when my father unexpectedly dropped in for a visit while traveling. I was so taken by the handwriting, that I decided to make it into a font, not only to remember my father, but also to forever preserve his handwriting. Cartier was Canada’s first roman text typeface, created in 1967 to celebrate Canada’s centennial. Its designer, Carl Dair, was one of the country’s most celebrated graphic design pioneers, and a fine designer indeed — but he was not a trained type designer. He had spent a year at the Enschedé type foundry and printing works in the Netherlands, but that probably wasn’t enough to fully grasp all that was required to make an effective text face. It is also possible that Dair simply compromised his own design by not allowing any of the much needed alterations to be made to his working drawings when they were handed over to Linotype for production. Cartier, though a strikingly original oldstyle, never became the influential allround text face it might have been. A display typeface derived from it, Raleigh, was more successful. Realizing that Dair’s design was sound in concept, if not in execution, Rod McDonald began working on a new digital version in 1997. The final family is convincing proof that Cartier could have been the functional text face that Dair originally wanted.

Gotta tell ya: think out of the box and this font is addictingly fun to use! Introducing Historic Warehouse, a substantial, yet elegant family, invoking advertising fonts of the early 20th century. Why the name? When asked to design a banner for Tucson’s Historic Warehouse District, I couldn’t find the look I wanted from any known fonts. After drawing what I wanted in Illustrator, there were three (and in the process, four) fonts just waiting to be realized. Happy to oblige. Here’s Historic Warehouse Regular, setting the stage. It’s sturdy, bold, and plays curves against rounded angular shapes. To its left is Historic Warehouse Condensed, trim, elegant and at its best at very large sizes; to the right is Historic Warehouse Wide, with charming style and presence. Finally, there’s Historic Warehouse Extended, extravagant in its proportions, with a beautifully-crafted form like a fine carriage.
