I read something interesting the other day: in 1910 a cat called Kiddo snuck on board an airship and was found by aeronaut Walter Wellman - after he had already taken off in an attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Wellman and Kiddo spent 71 hours aboard the airship, but never completed the journey, due to engine problems and foul weather. Luckily, they were both rescued. It was a funny story, so I decided to name a font after it. Reluctant Aviator is a handmade font (pen and paper). It has a rough edge, some shaky glyphs and a lot of bravado. I don’t live in the mountains, so when we go on holiday and visit the mountains, we always like to hear the echo! A bit childish, I know, but that’s how it is. I've had an interest in typography ever since my college days, even submitting my NDD thesis on the subject. The basic concept for this typeface stems from that early creative period, hence the obvious 60’s retro feel. It’s only recently that I've have had the chance to carry through fully some of my dormant typographic ideas, but ‘better late than never’ as they say! The font’s characteristic style is based on repeating or rotating templates of a half and a quarter circle, the geometric, modular building blocks used here. The name was simply influenced by the letter ‘u’, which visually describes a stylized ‘tulip’ flower.

Punkaholic started out as a loopy, all caps display font with a semi condensed feel. Before completion some of the letters such as A and W were given a more traditional look and were penciled in for alternates. In the end, however, they were added as uppercase characters instead. For this reason most words in lowercase vary in appearance from their uppercase counterparts. This dichotomy between straight lined capitals and rounded ones makes for some interesting contrasts. This ornamental font is the interpretation of ornaments of Trypillya culture. Trypillya culture, or Cucuteni-Trypillya is an archaeological culture of neolithic times. Its name derives from the name of the village of Trypillya nearby Kyiv. This culture experienced its culmination between 5500 and 2750 BC. The Trypillians lived in the territories between the Carpathian Mountains and the Dniper River of the modern Ukraine, Moldova and Romania. Many interesting ceramics decorated with original geometric ornaments survived to amaze us. Its heritage is still a little unknown to the public and therefore the patterns that are reproduced in this font have no analogues in the digital format.

The late-19th-century Prussian-American printer and publisher Louis Prang, the “father of the American Christmas card”, was well-known for his efforts to improve art education in the United States. He published many instructional books and even founded a training school for art teachers. One of the books he published included a series of alphabets for sign painters, lithographers, illuminators, architects and civil engineers. There was nothing truly original there — in the book’s preface, Prang says that the alphabets were “based on foreign forms and adapted for American taste”. The one alphabet that caught my attention in that book was one simply called “Italic”. It’s a high- contrast modern, a Didone really, but with an interesting little twist: the lowercase is almost entirely connected, which makes for an interesting mix of modern typography and classic calligraphy. That stuff is right up my alley now. Whenever my eyes happen on a modern, it’s easy, even almost impulsive for me to envision swashes coming out of serifs and terminals. The caps melt and the minuscules dance with them. And so I brought my vision to life. Prangs is an italic set of three weights, each containing more than 1400 glyphs with plenty of OpenType features and Latin language support. FranklinGothicHandCond is another part of a series of hand-drawn fonts from way back in time – before computers changed the way we worked in advertising. When I was in advertising – before computers – a very time consuming part of my daily work was sketching headlines. I used to be able to sketch headlines in Franklin Gothic, Times, Futura, Helvetica and several scripts. We had a kind of huge inverted camera – which we called Lucy. We projected the alphabet onto a sheet of transparent paper, outlined the letters with a fineliner and then filled them in. It was very tedious work, but the resulting headline had its own charm and we had a permanent race going on who was best and fastest. I won most of the time! CA Normal Serif is the perfect companion to its grotesque brother CA Normal. But it is not just a serifed equivalent. It has a character of its own while preserving the principal proportions and the idea of quirkiness. It was not the aim to build a typeface that can immediately be identified as a relative of CA Normal. The intention was to create a matching typeface in aspects of aesthetic and concept. Whereas commonly serif-companions to grotesques are old-style or slab-serif, CA Normal Serif is situated between modern and slab-serif typefaces. CA Normal Serif is a little bit of an uncomfortable typeface. Nothing is smooth and cozy. It picks up elements of classic newspaper type as brought to us by Chauncey H. Griffith's legibility group, sharing the flavor of abrasive details and "slabbish" serifs. But the proportions are more condensed than the ones of its predecessors giving it a bit more elegance, which moves it closer to the aesthetic of "Scotch Romans".

Framealot is a frame or border or page divider construction kit. By choosing and mixing various elements, a wide variety of different geometric borders or frames or dividers are possible. The largest set is on the upper-case keys. There are two other sets on the lower case keys (plus the comma and period.) The characters above the number keys (the whole top row with shift, plus {}| keys are another set. And there are a couple of other small sets. Not all the sets allow vertical dividers. Outlined versions are available on the outline style, and the filled style either inverts the pattern or removes white interior sections for the outline version (and has some other differences compared to the other two versions). Use a character map to find all the parts of a set, type them out on your document, and then copy and paste to construct your border or frame. Have fun with it!

Microbrew is a versatile retro display family with 14 individual styles, plus retro banners, ornaments, and symbols. It’s a nice mix between wood type poster style, and vintage letterpress. The more detailed styles work well at large sizes, and the cleaner styles add legibility at smaller sizes. Microbrew is an all caps display font, but the lowercase act as alternates. For super-easy alternates, just mix uppercase and lowercase letters. To add to the realism, Microbrew includes double-letter ligatures. Microbrew also includes a set of extremely intentional ornaments and symbols. Designed to give a vintage feel, the ornaments and symbols compliment Microbrew nicely to round off the family. The ornaments also include catchwords, old style numbers, and lots of retro symbols. Don't let the name fool you, Microbrew is very versatile and works great for almost any subject matter, including weddings, birthdays, restaurants, coffee shops, music, and many more.
