This font was made possible by creating a custom brush in Illustrator. I started with a flat brush dipped in India ink to create the stroke. From a scan of that stroke I made a vector tracing which I then I altered as necessary to get the desired dimensions. The lower case letters have a thinner stroke than the capitals.

Gimbo is bold. This heavy sans-serif design features thin counters. The interior spaces inside letterforms have been reduced as much as possible. Often, they seem abstract. There are three fonts in the Gimbo family: Black, Ultra, and Ultra Shadow. What do those terms mean? Well, Ultra is wider than Black. It takes up more pixels on-screen or brings more ink to the page.

This font was created while looking at the various shapes my handwriting consistently took, especially in the ways that letters would have breaks in them. Over the course of a few months I continually tweaked the letter forms and shapes, and lo and behold, I developed Deco Sans. This family currently only includes a thin weight, as I'm only one person, and very busy with college. I'm continuing work on a regular, bold, and possibly a future italic weight, but these may not be released for many months to come. As this is a very thin font, it should be used at sizes no smaller than around 16 or 18pt as it tends to get lost in whitespace, and looks best at large sizes. As such, this weight should be considered more of a display font than a text font, however, I predict a regular weight to be very readable and much more useable for the everyday.

The origin of this typeface is a Polish catalog cover dated 1936, made by I. Rubin. The word ”Graficz” (included in the poster copy) seemed appropriate as a name for this typeface with its typical ”Central European look”. The original letters are more ”thin” (light weight) than the MRF interpretation and only consists of capital letters. Lower cases and almost all standard character signs have been added, in order to make it more functional.

Pisang Manis means ‘sweet banana’ in Bahasa Indonesia. I don’t think this particular combination is used in everyday life, but it sounds nice. Pisang Manis is based on an older font of mine, called Pisang, which I created in 2013. It looks similar, but it is a different font altogether. Pisang Manis is a ‘Tall & Thin’ display font, ideally used for product packaging, websites and book covers.

In this font I drew the letters with a pen and or with just the index finger on a tablet, completely free, without improvement. The chaos ensuing. As if I was rushing notes just for me. Then, without changing the design any further, but to make the chaos minimally legible, I decided - look at this madness! - to organize the chaos. Very thin fluid strokes and high speed letters form this casual script entitled TCF Plana. TCF Plana is elegant and functional, expressive yet harmonious, with more bounce and irregularity of rhythm than usual formal script typefaces. TCF Plana was executed with a ball-point pen and then digitised so it would convincingly mimic handwriting by using a plethora of contextual alternates which makes the words look much more natural and beautiful.

Larks' Tongues in Aspic is the fifth studio album (released in 1973) by the English progressive rock group King Crimson. I have always liked this name, as it reminded me of old stories in which witches threw all kinds of weird ingredients (larks’ tongues, bat wings and petrified dragon dung) into a big cauldron. When I created this font, it looked like the writing in an old book of spells, so I just had to call it Larks’ Tongues. Larks’ Tongues is a very lively headline font which would look good on (children’s) book covers, posters and product packaging. So, if you are about to write a book about witches, want to throw a halloween party or want to market your Larks’ Tongues in Aspic, then by all means, use this font! Comes with a magical amount of diacritics.

The hand lettered title found on the 1938 sheet music for "I Haven't Changed a Thing" is a condensed Art Deco thick-and-thin sans serif with rounded corners. Reminiscent of office door and similar signage, this classic bit of lettering from the past is now available as Personnel JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Nothing is more iconic of Paris than its antique Metro signs, which are the inspiration for this typeface. The signs vary from station to station, some featuring plain block capitals, others the most exquisite Art Nouveau. This example falls somewhere in between. and should inject a strong gallic flavour into any design or publishing project. To recreate the Metro effect in Photoshop, set your text white on red, then go to Layer Style> Inner Shadow. Think of Garamouche as Garamond's drunken cousin. This font replicates a long lost document ravaged by time and the elements (with a little sloppy printing for good measure.) Unlike the fake bolding option found in software programs, Garamouche Bold is a variant with more appropriate thick and thin features. The "dancing along the baseline" that has made Garamouche a favorite, is also a feature in Garamouche Bold, but the letters align and tilt in on their own terms. Using the two Garamouche fonts together can produce much more expressive results than just hitting "bold". Ebdus is a thin, modern, lightweight font, occasionally a little gawky and tall, sometimes a little plump and rounded. McMurtrie, Aaron Borad, and Leslie Sprunger began designing this high-contrast novelty face for the Ludlow Foundry in 1928. Zart is a heavy yet delicately sensitive display typeface filled with character, a free interpretation of the classical French styles from the late eighteenth century, reimagined for modern use. While it’s vertical strokes carry the typical weight of this style, the thinness of the horizontal strokes is further extended into the characters with the introduction of large vertical ink traps. This allowed us to design slightly narrower letters which, coupled with shorter serifs, result in a overall darker expression, creating really impactful headlines. Zart is available in three versions: Regular, Italic and Script.

Here’s yet another interpretation of the classic “thick and thin” sans serif lettering most popular during the Art Deco era. This particular design comes to you through the courtesy of a hand lettered 1930s travel poster from the Pennsylvania Railroad.
