At home we have a wood stove. Last year, I bought a whole bunch of tree trunks, which I cut up with a chainsaw and then chopped with my Swedish axe. In Holland we have a saying that firewood keeps you warm three times: when you cut the tree, when you chop the wood and when you burn it in the stove. Our stove is rather small, so it is not exactly a blazing furnace, but I liked the name because it seems to fit this font. Blazing Furnace was made with ink and a brush. It is a bit messy and rough, but it comes with multilingual support and a nice set of alternates for the lower case letters.

This typeface comes from a self initiated project called Sápmi, which aims to contribute to keep a group of minority languages alive through solving issues in the education environment. This re-thought edition takes the name of Aanaar and joins our library with a bigger character set and two new weights which complete the typeface providing a big typographic palette as well as adding stylistic two-story a and g for more advanced readers as well as to enable the typeface to be used in other environments. The typeface was originally designed for children’s text books. Analysing kid’s typeface design, we identified some important problems and solved them within the boundaries we had. The main concern in a typeface which will be used by children is letter recognition, as they have not yet fully develop their reading skills. For example, letters like “a” and “g” share a very similar structure in this particular kind of typefaces, where the only distinctive part is the descender of the “g”. It is known that the lower part of the letter is the less important feature when reading, therefore we decided to make a clear distinction between them by having an “a” with a spur on the top right. This also helped distinguishing “a” and “o”. Children typefaces usually have one story “a”, making “a” usually too close to “o”. Additionally we moved the joint in “a” upwards and narrowed very slightly the “a” to make sure they cannot be mistaken. More generally, the x-height is fairly tall and the typeface has a bit of movement which give it a good rhythm helping moving along nicely when reading. Aanaar consists of 5 weights (Light, Regular, Medium, Bold and Black) plus two Italics (Light Italic and Italic).

This is our name for Antique Tuscan, of which there were many variations. This font came from a large lot purchased around 1970 from an east coast newspaper shop. Subsequently, we acquired several more versions of the face, but this one had lowercase so we used it.

Genovaite Baroniene is former school teacher and a native of Lithuania who loves fancy letters. When she writes, she likes to add extra flourishes to her handwriting and printing. It simply appeals to her to do so. While living in the United States a few years ago and working in the health care field, she put pen to paper to provide a specimen of her writing from which a font could be developed. The process has taken longer than either of us expected. Now we are finally able to present Baroniene ML, a stylishly unique example of what we call Lithuanian Folk Baroque. Baroniene ML has a total of 362 glyphs, including the Unicode Latin Extended-A glyphs (0100 to 017F), covering the more widely-used Central European languages. To resolve the cedilla/undercomma conundrum, we have chosen to design a hybrid disconnected accent for use with C, G, K, L, N, R, S & T. We hope this solution is acceptable to users of Albanian, Catalan, French, Latvian, Portuguese, Romanian and Turkish. Baroniene ML also comes with four ligatures: gh, Th, th and Ch (167, 172, 177 and 181). Baroniene ML is certainly not the polished script of a professional calligrapher. It is very personal. The human source is still visible in its form. The letter spacing is uneven. Some of the curves are not quite perfect. In sum, the individuality has not been refined out of it. That is why it is so charming. If you want for a font that has a very different look, perhaps Baroniene ML is what you need.

Elida JNL was modeled from an image of some wood type for sale online. Although the type design most likely has its roots in the classic Bodoni, there were a few characters in the original wood type that had a bit of a square or block shape to them. Those characters were modified in order to keep with the overall roundness of the other characters. The name Elida JNL comes from a small town in New Mexico. Available in six styles: Regular, Oblique, Extra Condensed, Extra Condensed Oblique, Ultra Condensed and Mega Condensed.

In his 1538 book on measurement, Albrecht Dürer gave clear descriptions and drawings about the proportions of the letters in both Roman and 'fraktur' alphabets (from Latin 'fractura', meaning that it's broken up with lots of different angles rather than smooth curves). Here is the fraktur alphabet as a font completed for use today, with a few characters modernised and some gaps filled. Of course there are countless examples of fraktur fonts already circulating, and indeed one foundry even has another version of this particular one; but we have different approaches to some of the questions raised, we have aimed at a more even tracking (horizontal spacing), and the 260 glyphs in our version include accents and other diacritics, and the modern symbols which Dürer would surely have embraced if he had had access to the internet.

Hipster Script is another of my habitual attempts at trying to reduce the divide between manual and digital. In this case, I try to articulate brush lettering, try to get the computer to emulate continuous painting. The process wasn't that different from my work with Feel Script's shot at computerized commercial lettering, though here we have a more casual contrast, rather than the high seriousness of the Copperplate script. Swashes, alternates, ligatures — too many of them, all trying to make the interplay between the tool’s two extreme widths remain faithful to hand movement subtleties. I also toyed with ligatures containing apostrophes, something I've never seen before. Claude Garamond (ca. 1480-1561) cut types for the Parisian scholar-printer Robert Estienne in the first part of the sixteenth century, basing his romans on the types cut by Francesco Griffo for Venetian printer Aldus Manutius in 1495. Garamond refined his romans in later versions, adding his own concepts as he developed his skills as a punchcutter. After his death in 1561, the Garamond punches made their way to the printing office of Christoph Plantin in Antwerp, where they were used by Plantin for many decades, and still exist in the Plantin-Moretus museum. Other Garamond punches went to the Frankfurt foundry of Egenolff-Berner, who issued a specimen in 1592 that became an important source of information about the Garamond types for later scholars and designers. In 1621, sixty years after Garamond's death, the French printer Jean Jannon (1580-1635) issued a specimen of typefaces that had some characteristics similar to the Garamond designs, though his letters were more asymmetrical and irregular in slope and axis. Jannon's types disappeared from use for about two hundred years, but were re-discovered in the French national printing office in 1825, when they were wrongly attributed to Claude Garamond. Their true origin was not to be revealed until the 1927 research of Beatrice Warde. In the latest 2023 edition, the font's display elements have become even more attractive, while the overall font balance has also been improved. This is the result of the visual research we did before working on the update. Here is what has changed. The visual elements of the font are now logically coherent. We got rid of the ones that did not suit the font's concept and kept the most attractive ones. The changes affected letters with diagonal strokes "M, N, И", and figures "2, 3, 6, 9". All round characters' shapes have been standardized for all font styles. In the previous version, all glyphs looked different: more square or oval, depending on the font's weight. We made the shapes consistent for the font to feel more integral. Glyphs containing bowls have also changed. We have worked on the balance, altering the height and shape of the bowls. Like rounded ones, we aspired to make the glyphs more balanced for all font styles. The shapes of the letters "J, M, N, S, W, З, И" and Black font style characters have changed. The individuality of these glyphs was slightly different from the whole set, which became apparent in larger sizes. We have improved the shapes and made them more suitable for the font's style. We have researched Scandinavian languages and designed ligatures and diacritical sets that would definitely be useful for designers. We have redesigned diacritical marks, figures, and punctuation marks. Now all characters follow the same logic and contribute to a well-balanced impression of the font. The character set in each font style has been increased from 934 to 1719, and the number of OpenType features—from 24 to 40. The new font includes 23 font styles: 11 roman, 11 italic, and 1 variable font. The variable font has also become a significant technological advancement for TT Firs Neue. We retained a warm sentiment towards TT Firs Neue's previous success while redesigning the font and implementing substantial alterations. The 2023 font has been developed according to new technical standards that have become significantly higher in the past 5 years. TT Firs Neue is a font well-suited for a wide range of contexts. At the moment we were thinking about creating a new wide sans-serif, and an interesting question emerged during the trip: what font would be associated with autonomous electric transport. Then we thought it would also be nice to expand this theme visually. This is how the font family TT Autonomous came about. It is a modern brutal technological sans-serif. The basic visual characteristic of the typeface is the noticeable squareness of the characters and angular internal space. In addition, the typeface proportions tend to appear monospaced, but they are not really monospaced. The width of the characters is inspired by automobile logotype proportions, which are mostly rather wide. We could not disregard the fact that code lines in software for autonomous cars are traditionally typed using monospaced fonts and added a special monospaced subfamily to the TT Autonomous typeface. Thanks to the squareness of the characters inherited from the main family and the real monospace properties, the character forms in the subfamily turned out very specific and interesting. This is especially true for oblique monospaced fonts, which are true italics. In addition, we created a couple of outline styles which are great for use in titles and large inscriptions and perfectly match the basic family and the monospaced family. As opposed to outlines that can be created in graphic editors, in TT Autonomous Outline we worked through the narrow and questionable spots, thanks to which the font looks professionally complete and harmonious. As from the very beginning, the font was developed with tomorrow's technologies in mind, we could not miss addressing variability and creating a variable font. TT Autonomous has variable versions for both the basic and the monospaced subfamilies. TT Autonomous is a complex font family that consists of 32 fonts intended to solve a broad range of design tasks. Overall, the font family features 14 regular styles, 6 monospaced styles, 7 reversed styles, 2 outline styles and 3 variable fonts. The number of glyphs varies from 630+ in the monospaced font to 790+ in the basic styles. The basic subfamily has alternates, ligatures, old-style figures, slashed zeroes, and many other useful features. ITC Magnifico Daytime and ITC Magnifico Nighttime are inspired by nineteenth-century decorated types and letterings. “Although they are designed as display typefaces, their use is not limited to large headings. Usually three-dimensional types are employed in gigantic headings in large posters, but I thought it would be interesting if such decorative types were used as well in small sizes, say at 12 point,” says designer Akira Kobayashi. “There were a few examples of small three-dimensional types used in cards printed in the nineteenth-century. I studied their letterforms carefully and became more and more interested in those small three-dimensional types. The outlines of ITC Magnifico are robust enough to endure use at small sizes. Sometimes the angle or the shape of the 'shadow' had to be slightly modified or even illogical, because the letterforms ought to look as simple as possible. The resulting types are fairly easy to read at small sizes, and I hope that at large sizes those occasional oddities will appear charming.”

Stradivarius, sometimes known as Symphonie was designed by Hungarian born Imre Reiner (1900-1987). Reiner was not only a type designer, he was a fine artist. He enjoyed sculpture, painting, graphic and industrial design. In 1921, F. H. Ernst Schneidler, (Schneidler Initials) introduced Reiner to type design. Stradivarius was designed and first released by the Bauer Type Foundry in 1938.

Naïve Sans is a sans serif handwritten font designed by Fanny Coulez and Julien Saurin in Paris. Our goal was to draw a font with finely irregular lines that give a human and whimsical feeling. We drew five finely balanced weights to assure a good readability whatever the size, with contrasting upstrokes and downstrokes to add an unusual, fancy touch. We also designed five shaked versions with different lowercases and uppercases, to improve your designs and bring a more organic and playful feeling.
