That experience left a mark on me that over the years mixed up with my practice as a type designer. “Caligrafía Inglesa” is, basically, the spanish translation for the copperplate calligraphic style. This was the initial idea that led the spirit of the project, but from the beginning it started to develop a typographic personality of its own. The new Inglesa font comes in 6 weights –from a skinny monolinear to an elegant black– with a companion set of roman caps. The harmony in both styles transmits as a result, a strong english spirit but with a fresh latin spice, assuring the perfect combination for any elegant design. In each style one can use simple alternation with lowercase letters, context-based alternation to eliminate repetition of adjacent characters, and a broad range of language support. As a result, each letter offers six variations that can be combined. These can be used as another alternation within a single word or as different bold weights. As a bonus, a fourth, additional style named “Crap” is freely available and as the name implies, it contains a wide array of various impurities.

Designed by the renowned Robert Hunter Middleton of Chicago’s Ludlow Typograph Company, this “serifless roman” was first introduced in 1929. Middleton has created a transitional face linking the traditional thick and thin serifs of the times with the new Futura and Kabel design imports. With its slightly flared main strokes, Stellar predates in many respects Hermann Zapf's Optima by thirty years. Highly effective where an elegant and warm feeling is desired. This typeface is faithful to the original letterforms of the Stellar design. Stellar Classic is also available in the OpenType Std format. Some new characters have been added as stylistic alternates in this new version. Stylistic alternates and other advanced features currently work in Adobe Creative Suite InDesign, Creative Suite Illustrator, and Quark XPress 7. Check for OpenType advanced feature support in other applications as it gradually becomes available with upgrades.

This is the Viking font that I developed based on the letters in the Irk Bitig book, which is written with the brush line of the old Turkish runic alphabet, the information below. It was interesting work. Irk Bitig or Irq Bitig (Old Turkic: 𐰃𐰺𐰴 𐰋𐰃𐱅𐰃𐰏‎), known as the Book of Omens or Book of Divination in English, is a 9th-century manuscript book on divination that was discovered in the "Library Cave" of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, China, by Aurel Stein in 1907, and is now in the collection of the British Library in London, England. The book is written in Old Turkic using the Old Turkic script (also known as "Orkhon" or "Turkic runes"); it is the only known complete manuscript text written in the Old Turkic script. It is also an important source for early Turkic mythology.

It all started with making of a simple all-caps font. I drew the whole alphabet, numbers all else needed - but something wasn't quite right...the lettershapes were fine, but quite boring. Then I took a drastic decision: I started all over again ... meaning, I printed the whole thing, messed it up using a wet cloth and wrinkled the paper - then scanned it all again, and imported all the graphics yet again. A lot of work, yes - but personally I think it was worth it! But anyway, that's the story of how Primitivus was made ... well, almost, but not quite ... but that's another story! Use Primitivus for anything that needs that special kind of look were handdrawn letters meets grunge! Play around with the 4 different versions of each letter to make your text look even more random and natural!

Tipperary was designed by Steve Matteson and named for a favorite 'single track' bike trail, Tipperary is a monoline Humanist Sans Serif typeface. The clear, open, letter forms curve abruptly in an almost squarish geometry much like the sharp turns on the Tipperary trail. The clear, austere forms offer exceptional legibility for both interface designs and extended reading. These classic designs were reinterpreted to conform to technological constraints of LCD and e-Paper while retaining the properties of proportion and form which made them favorites for print.

The handwriting typeface Escritura was created for editorial purposes and the letter forms are influenced by chancery handwriting from the Italian Renaissance. The asymmetrical shapes of the undulating serifs cause the characters to have a large aperture. Originally designed for display sizes, the typeface also comes in a text version for small sizes. With taller vertical proportions, the text version has slightly longer serifs and increased white space between the characters to optimize legibility in small sizes. Ascenders and descenders and serifs are shorter in the display version, which has more economical letter spacing resulting in a visually compact text image. The stress in the letter strokes create changing widths according to their direction, improving the calligraphic rhythm in the characters. The oblique crossbar as well as other typographic details lend the typeface that typical Renaissance atmosphere.

Robert Hunter Middleton drew the original design of Stellar for the Ludlow Typograph Company in Chicago. Work began in the late 1920s, when Middleton was asked to create a sans serif type family to compete with European imports of Futura and Kabel. Stellar was Middleton's attempt to raise the ante. Where Futura and Kabel were geometric in design and monotone in weight, Stellar was based on roman character proportions and stroke weighs were stressed. In the late 1990s, Dave Farey took on the task of reviving the Stellar design. While Ludlow cut Stellar in a full range of point sizes, the family was limited to just a roman and bold design. Farey's revival is twice as large a family. It ranges from a very light called Stellar Nova to a very bold called Zeta In between are Lyra and Epsilon.

SL Che is a homage to Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, “El Che”, who lived between 1928 and 1967. El Che turned into an universal icon through a memorable photograph which was reproduced and multiplied to the infinite. It was that way he became a synonymous of resistance, revolution and change for lots of generations. That "Che" comes back today by the hand of the genial Jorge Alderete, who designed heroic, laughing and cool variations of that popular first icon. SL Che unfolds like a fan of thousands of "Che", in a development plenty of metaphors. SL Che abridges a sum of original iconographic illustrations in True Type format, which masterly synthesizes the most important themes of the grand genius of the literature. As with any attempt at a new typeface, you want to create something different. A difficult task as most legible fonts are based on something previous. Somatype isn't actually based on any particular font but it has unavoidable similarities to others. The important difference here being the distinctive quirk of the connection points going opposite to the norm; exemplified best by the lower case d & e. Once devised, the unique characteristic was applied wherever possible, keeping the rest of the characters in a sympathetic, rounded style. I first designed this in the light weight version, seeing it working best as a large open display font for magazines etc. but realized it would be too light for body copy at small scale, so, medium and bold weights were created to resolve that issue. Incidentally, the word ‘somatype’ literally means body-type.

Alejandro Freitez’s first commercial typeface is inspired by contemporary serifs and newspaper typography. Calicanto is a compact typeface with strong serifs, symmetrical curves and a vertical axis. It has open counters and a generous x-height with slightly condensed characters and low contrast strokes. The design of its letters are simple (with a precise rationale), and it is ideal for combining different variables and typographic bodies, for digital and printed media.
