When teaching font-making at the Art Institute of Tucson, I give my students plenty of lab time to come up with design ideas. I designed Pucky while one class created their fonts. It came about through an idea for a capital A: sort of a triangle with two round sides and a crossbar formed by a circle falling out. (You can see it here.) In drawing that, I hit upon the idea of making the tops of the alphabet sharp and square and the bottoms rounded. (See the whole alphabet here.) Pucky suggests both circus and psychedelia. Hmmmm, does anybody have an “in” at Cirque du Soleil?

Aviano is an extended titling face with influence from the power and timeless beauty of classical letterforms. Aviano features extended characters for a formal feel, sharp, powerful looking serifs and geometric and consistent letterforms. Use Aviano as an alternative to Trajan. Aviano includes a number of advanced OpenType features including alternates, 40 unique ligatures and old style figures. The Aviano family was updated in 2008 to include a light and black weight. Android is an experimental 3D shadow outline font developed by the American type designer Alex Kaczun. The unique lighting created by the beveled edge in combination with an outline font was particularly difficult to create. But the result was worth the effort. Android makes for a powerful headline display that virtually pops off the page. There is a true three dimensional quality to this innovative new typeface. Use the regular Android when setting tight leading for smaller point sizes, and use Android Tall which has taller capitals for larger headlines. By experimenting with Type Effects in Illustrator or PhotoShop you can achieve some spectacular additional 3D effects.

Morandi is the first commercial sans serif font created by Jovica Veljović – a much-awarded designer who's been creating typefaces for over thirty years. The product of years of crafting letterforms, Morandi is supremely graceful. Each detail has been carefully refined for legibility, with open counters and generous apertures, and the bottom of round strokes slightly flattened. Not just elegant in appearance, Morandi is an efficient design, versatile enough to work in print and digital environments, including on-screen applications. The family offers three weight ranges and includes a large multi-national character set – making it a practical choice, as well as an aesthetic one.

P22 Preissig Calligraphic was originally designed by Czech typographer, artist, and designer Vojtěch Preissig (1873–1944). Preissig developed this type design in 1928 and has remained unpublished until recently. One can only speculate why this wonderful design was never produced into a commercially available typeface. His original designs feature an accompanying italic as well as small caps. Preissig had originally named the typeface design after his former employer in New York, Butterick Publishing Co. The ‘Butterick’ typeface retains the angularity of his previous typeface, Preissig Antiqua (AKA P22 Preissig Roman), but displays a more fluid calligraphic influence. P22 Preissig Calligraphic was started shortly after Richard Kegler saw the original drawings in an exhibit in Prague in 2004. A sympathetic security guard allowed a few photographs and the contraband images fueled a development of the typefaces. The design simmered for many years and is now ready to enter the world of contemporary design. P22 Preissig Calligraphic is a 2 font family that contains the originally designed small caps as an OpenType feature, as well as all the necessary diacritical to cover most European languages.

Catshape is a font of dingbats, which in combinations with uppercase and lowercase you can generate multiple characters with different textures. In addition to a set of ornaments and a font called Alquitran Stencil, it was designed for different graphics. I hope you can have fun with this font!

The letters in this font are made by chopping bits from footprints. Individual letters are sometimes very hard to decipher, but when put together as words they are usually readable. In Pedestrisan-Regular, the original version of this font, the upper-case letters have toes on the top the lower case letters have toes on the bottom. All the feet with letters are right feet. The upper case and lower case do not mix. In 2020 two alternate versions were created. In Pedestrian-Alt all toes are on the top but the lower-case letters are left feet. In Pedestrian-AltTwo all toes are on the bottom with the upper-case letters being cut from left feet and the lower case from right feet. Both the alternate styles also have an alternate set of numbers on the unicode circled numbers that can also be accessed with an OpenType feature.

Bigticy is a typeface with a "new-retro" feeling. Its square outline is tempered by rounded angles. This makes it suitable for a large range of applications in the domains of magazine headlines and posters. The Narrow version has been drawn from a title found in an example (dated from the 50's) of the French newspaper "Le Dauphiné Libéré". For the Maxi style, I have tried to reduce to their minimum the inner white spaces. I had in mind those amazing stone walls that one can see in the antique Inca cities in Peru. The stones are so tightly joined that it is impossible to slip a sheet of paper between them. The Plain version is an interpolation of the two other ones. It is a very useful style since I keeps the main quality of each parent: the weight of the Maxi and the narrowness of the Narrow.

El Guapo is a hand drawn font available in sans serif and script faces. It is suitable for headlines and call outs of all kinds where a hand made look is desired. The letters were drawn by Prissy Pots owner Erin Solomon and include regular and bold versions. Each face also includes an entirely separate set of lowercase letters accessible in your glyphs palette. These extra letter will automatically show up with contextual alternates turned on for a more natural, random look.

Pincoya Black Pro is a font based on lettering found on a poster from the Spanish Civil War, complemented with graphics developed in “La Unidad Popular” (Chilean political coalition) during the seventies. Since I designed Mommie you can see a lot of script typefaces with big contrast for big sizes. With Narziss I created a roman interpretation with the very expressive Swirls version. Glenda is again an italic script like Mommie. In the Regular the characters join and it looks like a neatly written sprencerian handwriting. But like Narziss it has got a Swirls version too. Every glyph and swirl is carefully designed to work in every connection. Use Glenda at only very large sizes.

An older typeface belonging to a family of sans serif fonts known as Grotesque (or Grotesk in the classic spelling) has been re-drawn by Jeff Levine and released as Album Cover JNL. The font's name is derived from the fact that this typeface was found on many long-playing record jackets during the 1950s and 1960s. To add a look closer to that of hand-set type, there are minute variants in some of the heights of the characters.

Make no mistake, Maritime Champion is not simply seaworthy. This peacoat-grubbing, all-hands-on-decking, accordion-serenading font is not for the faint of heart. He’s all caps all the time. Even the lightest of his six weights is enough to anchor a man-o-war in any Caribbean maelstrom. This 10-font family includes six weights and a Shoreline style that comes in four weights. -OC Revolt is a variable display font made for the protest graphics of the NYC based T*#@p Brexit era Non-Complicit project who initially made guerrilla type with masking tape applied directly in situ or to silk screens. An uppercase only font there are alternate versions of each character on the lowercase keyboard. Double letter ligatures are used to prevent direct mechanical repetition of letters in the static styles and the Shift axis can be used to make each letter variably unique.

Die Brücke was a group of German expressionists which formed in Dresden in 1905. Members of the group include Erich Heckel, Fritz Bleyl, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Much of the group's work was influenced by primitivism and medieval woodblock printing. Die Bruecke font was based on a printed invitation for an art exhibition from 1906. Although the font is all caps, upper and lower case glyphs differ and can be interchanged. Of course Die Bruecke comes with extensive language support.

Bronkoh: A Subtly Softened Sans. Bronkoh aims to give a friendly face and soft touch to type both on screen and in print. The 1930s-era French alphabet collection entitled “La Lettre Dans le Decor & La Publicite Modernes” (which somewhat translates to “The Letter in Modern Decor and Advertising”) has page after page of attractive and unusual type interpretations. One particular Art Deco design puts an entirely different spin on the classic “rounded terminals and geometric design”. Unusual character shapes add a fresh new/old take to the “Streamline Movement”. The aptly-named Deco Francois JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Binner Gothic is a very narrow sans serif thought to have been cut by the Bruce Typefoundry, in New York, around the turn of the century. The capitals are rather heavy with an elongated appearance, accentuated by the high-waisted treatment of characters such as B E F H M N P and R. The lowercase ascenders and descenders of the Binner Gothic font are cut at an angle. Binner Gothic is a display face particularly useful where space is at a premium.

Minimo Font Family comes in 4 weights; Normals and Obliques. To have an eye-pleasing view, the corners are rounded and the lowercases are made smaller than the standard. Palatino is the work of Hermann Zapf and became available in the late 1950s from D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt am Main. Zapf optimized Palatino’s design for legibility, producing a typeface which remained legible even on the inferior paper of the post World War II period. Zapf named the font after Giambattista Palatino, a master of scripts from the time of Leonardo da Vinci. Palatino is an Old Face font which proves that classic forms can still be used to create new typefaces.

Magazine Grotesque is a sans-serif font specially designed for headlines and titles. Its unique features make it different from the traditional Grotesk typefaces. For example, outstroke extending beyond body in 'a' and 'e' letters or closed aperture in 'c', creating an unusual rhythm. Heirloom grew from an interest of soft and friendly forms from the 1970s, with respect to the time's chill vibes and natural earthy roots. Taking inspiration from an attempt to marry art with industry of Bauhaus (1919), Brueul Grotesk is classic and straightforward, cutting back superfluous elements. A Sans Serif type, it’s like a design from the Machine Age. It comes in A and B sets to offer end variations—choose the bulbous terminals set if you need a less stern impression. Handu, designed by Alex Jacque in 2012, is an affable hand-drawn sans-serif inspired by the hand-painted type and signage on the streets of Kolkata, India. Fitting then that it come to life with brush and paint. When used for display purposes the organic, painted texture of Handu's glyphs really shines. At smaller point-sizes the hand-drawn aesthetic still translates. Handu comes in two styles, regular and shadow. Use each independently or overlay them for a little youthful emphasis.

The lettering on the cover of the sheet music for 1919's "The World is Waiting for the Sunrise" was set in a decorative sans serif with an engraved line adorning each character. Reminiscent of the headlines of legal documents, way bills, stock certificates and the like, the digital version of the design was given the name Legal Eagle JNL and is available in both regular and oblique versions. A companion font without the engraved lines is also available as Junior Clerk JNL.

Byronic is soft modern sans-serif but with an antique style lower-case. The rounded end soft look gives Byronic a friendly soft look whilst still retaining a classical typographic appearance.
