I was playing around with an old brush I found in our kitchen: it had fallen under the stove and it had probably been hiding there for quite some time! I dusted it off, got my Chinese ink and set to work. The result is a scary-ish font. Mortal Coil comes with discretionary ligatures for double lower case letter combinations.

This work is inspired by creatures that I have drawn for my six year old boy. The monsters can be found at chrismetcalfe.com. I wanted to take their hair/fur and translate the fun attitude to type. To be honest I think this font is used best as display type. However the fun attitude lends to many usages without structure.

This font was called differently when I started out building it, but after a long and insightful conversation with a good friend, I decided to call it Nebulous Promise. Nebulous Promise was made using a broken satay skewer (I like using those!) and Chinese ink. It comes with a full set of alternates for the lower case letters and extensive language support.

It began as a series of photographs of the rusty metal brand names on old tractors in a museum. When I scanned the photos and began to trace the letters, I found the rust and deterioration created a level of detail which gave my letters a psychotic anger which, as an art director in an advertising agency, I closely identified with.

I glad to introduce to you my new display font Anchor. I was inspired by Russian fairy tales with cyrillic lettering. So I hope you'll keep a bit of fairy in you upcoming products using my font. This excerpt was taken from a letter written by designer Kathryn Podorsky’s great-great-grandfather, Lucien Doize, in response to Edmond’s request to marry his daughter, Annie. The letter was not only beautiful contextually, but exquisitely penned and epitomized the delightful charm of the New Orleans people of the time. Vena Amoris, or “Vein of Love” refers to a phrase coined by Henry Swinburne in his A Treatise of Espousal published in 1686. Vena Amoris also refers to the fourth finger on the left hand which was traditionally believed to contain a vein running directly to the heart, hence “the ring finger.” As a digital font, Vena Amoris boasts an extensive Latin-based character set that supports 51 languages. The inspiration for this font (as well as the name!) comes from a London cafe I visited years ago. I was fascinated with the handwritten menu - irregular and awkward, yet refreshingly charming. I did my best to recall that particular look by adding 4 slightly different versions of each lowercase letter. The name of the font comes from the speed of the waiter...or the lack of it! But luckily he took his time, otherwise I wouldn't have had the time to really look at the handwritten menu! :)

A crumpet is a small griddle bread, mostly enjoyed in the UK, North America, Australia and New Zealand. I have never had one, but I have heard of them and I like the name - which is probably Welsh in origin. Lemony Crumpet is a whimsical, handmade font. It is tall & thin, shaky and jumpy and I wouldn’t use it as a poster font because of its delicate properties, but it would look fantastic on book covers, product packaging and websites. When I was painting this font, I suddenly had the movie Cool Runnings (1993, directed by Jon Turteltaub) in my head. I had to name the font, so I came up with Smooth Brushings. Of course, this font has nothing to do with the movie. Smooth Brushings is an all caps brush font, which was made with a stiff brush and some China Ink. Upper and lower case glyphs can be mixed. It is a very legible and clear font, ideally suited for posters, product packaging and book covers.

Xanthine… is a purine base found in most human body tissues. Yes, you can forget that. I don’t even know what it means, but I suddenly realised that I was running low on fonts with an ‘x’ in the name. Xanthine font is a messy brush: it is all caps, but upper and lower case mingle freely. It comes with a whole bunch of diacritics and some interesting ligatures as well. I have included a very handy shapez pack and a truckload of arrows - anything to make you happy…

Orenji is the Japanese word for Orange: it is a phonetic translation of the English word. I was actually looking for a certain shade of orange (the color), when I stumbled upon this fun word. I already toyed with the idea of creating a font loosely based on my son Sam's handwriting and I figured Orenji would be a good name for it. Orenji is a fun, cute and extravagant font. It has some uniquely shaped glyphs, comes with a giggle and a hug and more diacritics than you can throw a banana at.

My affection for Slab Serifs began in the early 1960s in Kansas City with Rob Roy Kelly and his fabulous collection of wood type. In the 1970s tried to re-create a Nebiolo Egiziano for Roger Black. Again for Roger, in the 1980s I designed a Slab Serif logo for Newsweek Magazine. Finally, in 2003, designed the Sutro Family. There were things I didn't like about it, so when I did Version 2 for Open Type, I changed it around a little, making it a much nicer Sutro.

The Tang family came to be, when I started studying fonts made for use in very small point sizes, like Bell Gothic. I studied the use of ink traps and went to town with them. Instead of just using them for their purpose: trapping ink to prevent the type getting blotted; I used them as a design feature. With those features Tang works very well in both headline and text use. I use it as a house type, and I've already seen it in a beer and cider labels.

I do groceries a couple of times a week. When I am shopping for food, I always read the ingredients list; I don’t want too much sugar, nor palm oil, trans fats or a lot of E numbers. It used to be quite hard finding products that didn’t contain artificial flavours or colouring, but it is getting better. Artificial Flavour is an anti-ode to the time we couldn’t get enough of the stuff - it is a handmade, all caps font which comes with extensive language support and a sweet set of alternates.

Germania is a Sans font based on classic roman proportions and forms based on my Imperia font. But I added that distinct, rigid, no-nonsense German touch. This monoline font with its classic proportions and personality is good for lots of occasions. And – I designed three »real« italic typefaces – not just slanting the straight ones. We love sports – like billions of fans all over the world – but in Argentina, we really love fútbol (soccer). Fútbol is part of our culture: it makes our hearts’ race and our pulses quicken, it inspires screams of joy and screams of anguish, and it has been the cause of more than a few heated conversations amongst friends. So you can imagine our delight when, in recent years, a local team’s fútbol jersey used a Sudtipos font; it got us thinking about designing a font that explicitly had sports in mind yet still had the versatility to work for other types of projects. Sporty has a geometric and modular structure with many potential applications that far exceed jerseys, score boards and stadium wayfinding. Its flexibility is evident when examining its four style – from a square style to a rounded one – as well as the Shadow and Inline options. Each of the styles also comes with a set of miscellaneous shapes including modular banners, plates and arrows.
