I became interested in designing Bodoni Classic because of a lazy graphic designer at Jacques Damase publishing house. He had to change a single letter on a bookcover about J. B. BODONI. The French call him Jean Baptiste instead of Giambattista! And that unknown graphic designer just took any old “J” from some newly cut Bodoni. All the new Bodoni cuts have square serifs, whereas the originals had rounded serifs and slightly concave feet. The single letter “J” with the squared off serif was for me like a road sign to start redesigning the entire Bodoni family. That’s exactly what I started in 1993 and a dozen years later I am finished. Okay, I am still adding new Bodoni Classics, but those are my personal additions. Tubby came about when I made a book with Cooper Black as a headline font. I started playing with heavy forms, and as a result was Tubby. It has a fat and friendly feel, and with swash italics it is fairly versatile in use.

Alterglam is one of my all time favorite fonts, although I didn't think so at first. The font appeared as a modification of my other default font. But over time, the font turned into an independent work. Moreover, the font began to live its own life and constantly demanded attention. So at the same time the Alterglam font is the most thoughtful and polished font in my collection. It is my pleasure to present this wonderful font set for exquisite designs. Larisch is a hand-lettered design by the Austrian calligrapher and teacher, Rudolf von Larisch. The original was used for the title page of the 1903 edition of Beispiele Kunstlerischer Schrift (Examples of Artistic Writing). Larisch is an attractive, casual set of caps of even strokes with rounded terminals. Except for the terminals, it is similar in style to Kunstler Grotesk. The numerals are lining or ranging figures, meaning they line up with the baseline, unlike old-style text figures. All are of equal width for setting up columns of numbers. The letters are well formed and easy to read, as you would expect from a writing master. Ligatures includes CH (123), CK (125), FT (135), LA (137), LO (167), OO (172), CO (177) and TT (181. An alternative O with underscore is provided at position 111. Friendly, but not fancy -- a very useful all-cap font.

Nutcase is a perfect example of a font that principally designed itself. I created a hexagonal template (the most economical form in nature by the way) and took out the center to increase the decorative element. I played around with it, creating some pleasing characters at first but it soon became clear it would translate into a complete alphabet, so I set to work applying the idea to both upper and lower cases. It wasn't all straight forward though, avoiding awkward characters and retaining legibility took a little perseverance but it eventually paid off. I thought of this primarily as a decorative display face but having tested it out, found it reads surprisingly well as body copy too.

The concept for ‘Scroll’ came to me fully formed when setting out to design a bold display typeface. The premise for this was to base the letter-forms on a rolled strip of paper. A simple enough idea in principle but one I hadn't seen before. After working out the basic characters I set about completing the full effect I was after. This was achieved by applying a suitably incised line following the curve at each turning point to convey the important three-dimensional aspects of a scroll. Although the phonetic name personifying the font was there as a working title from the outset, I didn't commit to it fully until everything was completely resolved.

Machin is a French word meaning 'thing'. Apparently, it is also a species of macaque from the Philippines, but I named this font after the French word! Machin is based on a really old font I made back in the day. It was called Whynot and (because I didn't know a thing about making fonts at the time) I could not get it to work properly, so it had its 15 minutes of fame before it was pulled off of the internet. Machin was made using the recycled glyphs from Whynot and it does work. It comes with extensive language support (yes, Vietnamese and Sami too), some handy ligatures and a lot of scribbly panache.

Inlow is a font that evokes a sense of retromodernity, aesthetics, and something perfect. When developing it, I wanted to convey a touch of retro design and modern design. It can be used in the design of posters, logos, covers, Instagram, just in the text and many other ideas, all just border on your ideas. I think I can see this font on the covers of books. It's exciting. Inspirations were book covers and cars from the 60s and 80s. I wanted to convey retro and modernism. Edito is a completely new bodycopy font. The special thing about this font is, that all serifs have the same height. So no matter if you take the thinnest cut (A) or the fattest (F), you will always have aligning serifs. I started Edito as an experiment. I tried to enhance the classic and sturdy Times font. But I soon dicovered, that it would be more efficient to take only the basic idea behind Times (the robust design) and start from scratch. It turned out a real solid and useful typeface for everyday use. In due time I will add a couple of extra cuts. Yours in a journalistic mood Gert Wiescher

You can't go wrong with this classic Swedish calligraphy font, created by veteran designer Bo Berndal. He named Gertrud after his better half, but was also inspired by old handwritten documents: "Gertrud is a calligraphic letter design from the 16th century. I used it when I engrossed diplomas with a flat-nibbed pen in the 1980's. When I got my Mac I generated the typeface in Fontographer." Gertrud (the typeface) comes in three weights, with roman and italic. It is an OpenType creation, for both PC and Mac. Swedish type foundry T4 premieres new fonts every month. When I hear people say that, it always reassures me that I am left-handed, in case I am ever doubtful about it. Five of the last eight U.S. presidents have been left-handed, so we're in good company, no matter which political party you're a fan of.
