A classic “American” sans serif with a kink Desphalia belongs to the kind of sans serif fonts that were created in the 19th century. You could also name it “American Gothic”, a sans serif in the style of fonts like Franklin Gothic, News Gothic and similar. Above all, the high x-height characterizes this typeface style, as do the identical heights of uppercase and ascenders. However, I allowed myself a few peculiarities ;-) On the one hand, there is the gently sloping horizontal middle line on letters such as H, E, F, A and e. The M also got gently slanted sides. Some of the lower-case letters have an up- or down-stroke: a d m n p u. This "kink" on the shaft also serves to better distinguish the small l from the capital I — as can be seen clearly with the term »Illinois«. In keeping with the tradition of American typefaces, Desphalia does not have a true italic. Rather, the letters of the “Italic” have the same character forms as the normal upright variant, but in oblique — and so it is not called “Italic” but “Oblique”. Style Set 01: Another American peculiarity is the capital I with dashes above and below. It is included in the Desphalia as an alternate character form. An alternative small l with the “kink” in the ascender is also included — as is a y with the “kink” in the descender. Style Set 02: The corresponding “straight” forms a d l m n p u without the break are included as alternatives in a separate style set. Small caps are uppercase letters that are optically the same size as lowercase letters. They offer a very classy way of emphasis. I have always had a keen interest in forging; I used to be a silversmith, and I love working with metal. Some time ago I forged my first axe (a skeggøx or bearded axe), sharpened it and fitted it with a handmade ash handle. It isn’t perfect, but it is my first ever forged axe and I’m pretty proud of it. All of this went through my head when I started drawing the glyphs for this font. And to be honest, I couldn’t find a more suitable name for it! Bladesmith is a handmade font, forged in fire (haha). It was actually made with an old sharpie. It is a rough and ready font, quite suited for headlines, book covers and posters.

This all started with a love for Minister. This is a font designed by Carl Albert Fahrenwaldt in 1929. In the specimen booklet there’s a scan from Linotype’s page many years ago. They no longer carry the font. I’ve gone quite a ways from the original. It was dark and a bit heavy. But I loved the look and the readability. This came to a head when I started my first book on all-digital printing written from 1994-1995, and published early in 1996. I needed fonts to show the typography I was talking about. At that point oldstyle figures, true small caps, and discretionary ligatures were rare. More than that text fonts for book design had lining OR oldstyle figures, lowercase OR small caps—never both. So, I designed the Diaconia family using the Greek word for minister. It was fairly rough. I knew very little. I later redesigned and updated Diaconia into Bergsland Pro—released in 2004. It was still rough (though I impressed myself). Now, with 4-font Biblia Serif family 13 years later, I’ve cleaned up, made the fonts more consistent internally, added more functional OpenType features, and brought the fonts into the 21st century. I used the 2017 set of features: small caps, small cap figures, oldstyle figures, fractions, lining figures, ligatures and discretionary ligatures. These are fonts designed for book production and work well for text or heads. Finally, in 2021, I went over the fonts entirely and remade them in Glyphs.

It's been said that creativity requires ten parts to perspiration to one part inspiration. But not always. According to its creator, Mira Vucko, ITC Needlescript was designed in one breath." An accomplished lettering artist, Vucko was sketching letters one afternoon. "I was using a calligraphy nib and was drawing the alphabet without much thought," she recalls. "When I allowed the down strokes of a couple of letters to fall below the baseline, I realized that I had created the impression of movement. I kept drawing letters in this fashion and did the same with horizontal lines. I added a firm ending to the descenders. Instead of dots above the 'i' and 'j,' I placed strokes in the opposite direction." In this way, the first characters that were to become ITC Needlescript emerged. The finished design is a lively, distinctive alphabet that produces a striking texture on the page. Letters intertwine and overlap to create a sense of movement and graphic intensity, especially when reversed out of a dark background. Vucko lives, works and was educated in Zagreb, Croatia. She lived in France and Sweden while in her twenties, but then returned to Croatia to work as a graphic designer for the country's largest newspaper. It was here that her passion for type and typography was born. Vucko has since gone on to become one of Croatia's leading graphic designers, and has won many awards for her advertising and packaging design. For some reason I had to think of Moby Dick (the classic book by Herman Melville) when I was busy working on this font. No, I don’t live near the sea, nor do I have a pet whale. It’s just one of those things… Whalebone (named after Captain Ahab’s prosthetic leg) is a handmade, all caps brush font. It wasn’t actually made with a brush; I used a broken satay skewer and Chinese ink. Whalebone comes with discretionary ligatures for double letter combinations.

In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil is the tree of life, which grows right into heaven - maybe even space! It has deep roots, which grows into three different worlds. I made this font in hope that someone with a love to Norse mythology could use it - maybe even for something viking themed! I don’t think that the gods of Norse mythology ever heard of contextual alternates or multilingual support - but I added it, without even asking! - Yggdrasil has 5 different versions of each letter (in both Regular and Rough) and supports loads of different languages!

This typeface is intended for use with single words or phrases at a large point size. Suggesting some sort of calligraphic inspiration, I sketched a couple of these letters while creating a logo concept and decided to make a complete alphabet. The stroke through the letterforms adds some interest and elegance, although I believe this typeface expresses a sort of vehement or serious character. This is my new, and first, typeface. I plan to create more in the future. If you use it for anything interesting, I'd love to see!

I'm always experimenting with new ideas for display fonts. I took the inside counter of a capital 'O', divided it into quarters, and applied an outline stroke to all the elements. By removing two quarters of the inside counter I had the beginnings for an interesting new design. Of course, the hard part was getting all the other letters in the alphabet to work well together using this approach. It's often a labor of love trying to shape an idea into a new typeface. I find the entire process stimulating and rewarding.

A handwritten decorative font with brush characteristics This attractive decorative script is found in a pamphlet of script samples from around 1900 which was issued by Otto Maier publishing house in Ravensburg/Germany. The forms and flow of Maier’s Nr. 42 are obviously influenced by Art Nouveau. In the original sample, only the Latin alphabet appears. All other characters, especially the Greek and Cyrillic letters, were modeled on elements of the original. A typeface can first reveal a true "handmade" character when the letter forms do not continually repeat themselves – a completely normal occurrence with handwriting. Thanks to OpenType, some key letters of Maier’s Nr. 42 appear in various alternative forms depending on the combination of letters. For example, the difference is obvious between an e followed by i and an e followed by l. Using this principle, a number of letter combinations are presented with alternative character forms so that overall a very lively impression is created.

Ambleside is a town in the English Lake District. I used to live and work there, so I decided to name a font after it. Ambleside font is a handmade connected script font. It’s a little rough, but loveable nonetheless. Comes with all the diacritics you need!

I originally wanted to call this font Instant Pudding. When I was a kid, we sometimes had instant pudding (the ‘add cold milk and rest in the fridge’ kind) for dessert. My brother and I loved the stuff, especially when some of the pudding powder had not dissolved and had turned into brightly coloured speckles! But this font, alas, did not ‘feel’ like instant pudding, so I hunted the internet for other, more obscure, puddings. I found Spoonbread. Apparently it is a pudding-like Southern American dish, made from cornmeal. I have never tasted it, nor do I particularly like corn (most of it is GMO anyway), but the font and the name became friends. And who am I to tear this beautiful relationship asunder? Spoonbread - use it for your packaging, your books, your posters and your games. And when you make Spoonbread, use organic cornmeal!

I like posh English words - the ones you read in books, but actually never use. Erstwhile is such a word; it means ‘former’, but if you use it while talking to someone, it sounds quite odd. Erstwhile is a classy font family - crafted in Holland (with love!).

This all started with a love for Jenson. I know there're hundreds of variations on that theme. But, that is where I began, several years ago. How far it came, as usual as I wandered through the vagaries of font design, is not unusual. If you've read any of my font design books, you know my design processes are quite loose and spontaneous. I wanted the general feel of a favorite old font, but softer, easier, and more comfortable. I built these on the same vertical metrics as my Librum Publishing Group. However, this family is not part of that group. I used the metrics because that shows my current taste in fonts. This family does work with the Librum group—but to be honest, I haven't experimented enough to come up with a good companion. I suspect I'll need to make another companion family. I may need make a non-modulated bold version also. But, that remains to be seen. I'm pleased with this.

Hello, friends! I recently bought myself an old game console, the SEGA Mega Drive 2. For a long time I couldn't understand why, when I was a kid, it seemed incredible to play it. Nowadays there are a lot of games with stunning graphics and realism, but still there is something warm and light in old games. Maybe it's just a memory of a carefree childhood. After playing it, I decided to create this font so that everyone could do something in the style of old games that an army of designers and programmers hadn't worked on yet. Hey guys! Meet our new font "Luxe Atelier" which is inspired by a bit quirky but still lovely handwriting. When we launched our font "Lolita" in 2019 many liked the way we replaced some uppercase letters with lowercase ones. The response was overwhelmingly positive. The feedback we received inspired us to refine the idea of the lowercase signature style and we created "Luxe Atelier" with a lot more lowercase letters that give an uppercase look. However, some uppercase letters simply cannot be written as lowercase due to their nature: they would just lose their primary sound. For example, when we tried writing lowercase 'e' in the uppercase style it more resembled lowercase 'l' and affected the legibility of the font. Therefore some letters in this font remained as is. When it comes to other letters, we tried maximally to keep the lowercase style. This playful, non-standard signature font with slightly rough edges includes 37 ligatures which will definitely add realistic handwritten character to your designs. It is perfect for branding, signatures, weddings and so much more.

To snuggle is "settle or move into a warm, comfortable position" - that is exactly what I did with making this chunky seriffed font. Well, maybe not a position, but a comfortable mood! I tried to mix some gentle grafitti moves and comic letters, and then a touch of the classic goofy pizzadude style - and the result is this cheeky font called Snuggle Punk. Full of round corners and fat lines - sounds like a nice cup of coffee! :)

Albe Sans is a font family that began life when I was struck by a full-color back page ad in a 1935 copy of Better Homes & Gardens. I loved the readability and general cleanliness of the design. This font is drawn from memory after that experience. It is loosely based on Palton for proportion, but heaviily modified (not to mention, Palton is serif): Lower case numbers, Euro, ballot box in the section slot.

To canoodle means to hug and kiss passionately. I leave the rest to your imagination. Canoodle is also a very adorable font - some would even go as far as calling it kissable. It is an all caps typeface, but upper and lower case differ and love to mix and match. I won’t guarantee a spot of canoodling if you use this font, but who knows, maybe you’ll get lucky. Canoodle speaks many tongues.
