I present you Trečiokas typeface. This two font family is based on written letters that were sketched by using paint markers and afterwards pollished digitally. Glyphs mostly are connected, leaving some separate, as a contrast to round and soft letter shapes. It includes extended latin character set. In 2013 I made the Aerofont project, which included custom music instruments that were made based on Trečiokas Normal letter shapes. The main idea was to connect music and typography, by making sound emitting letters. You can watch the project video here.

Hazim is a display font designed with isolated letters. It uses thin white slits positioned within extra bold black space glyphs emphasizing the main visual characteristics of the Arabetic letters in two positions: initial/medial and final/isolated. The spacing widths between glyphs match that of the slits to give a virtual cursive look and feel. The name Hazim was chosen to honor a friend of the designer, Hazim al-Khafaji. Hazim supports all Arabetic scripts covered by Unicode 6.1, and the latest Arabic Supplement and Extended-A Unicode blocks, including support for Quranic texts. It comes with one weight and a left-slanted “italic”. The script design of this font family follows the Arabetics Mutamathil Taqlidi style and utilizes varying x-heights. The Mutamathil Taqlidi type style uses one glyph per every basic Arabic Unicode character or letter, as defined by the Unicode Standards, and one additional final form glyph, for each freely-connecting letter in an Arabic text. Hazim includes the required Lam-Alif ligatures in addition to all vowel diacritic ligatures. Hazims’s soft-vowel diacritic marks (harakat) are only selectively positioned with most of them appearing on similar lower or upper positions to make sure they do not interfere with the letters. This Font is born basing itself on several standard typographic models. Inspired by our calligraphic drawings, the idea was to synthesize these many shapes into a unique font that can be used commonly. The slab base has been gradually humanized. The serifs have been carved, refined, rounded off, in order to galvanize the font and ease the task of reading in lower case. The angle of attack of the round letters is an echo of the 15 Century typographic heritage. It was important for us to create an expressive and humanized font, which could also be used for edition. The purpose was to confront the Ancient typographic canon of beauty with some funny and fancyful elements.

This font was inspired by the “Cancellaresca moderna ” type, which was calligraphed by Francesco Periccioli (published in 1610 in Siena, Italy). It was entirely handwritten by the designer for each circumstance, using quill pen and medieval ink on a rough paper, with added characters as accented ones and a lot of ligatures with respect for the original design. The idea for Quirky was born while I was looking at a book of etchings by British artist Graham Clarke. His signature, crawling spider-like across the page, fascinated me with its casual, almost messy, inky dark and light drama. I started scribbling the alphabet as I imagined he would write it, based on his signature, then continued, adding curls, making the characters more angular, and refining the dramatic play between dark and light. Mediator is a balanced contemporary sans serif typeface that performs well both in display sizes and body text. Around the turn of the 20th Century, the Inland Type Foundry produced a display face named Studley. It was a variation on a design by another foundry called Florentine. A condensed face with a bold, clean look, the design resembled the warmth and feel of a classic wood type. Jeff Levine had added his own personal touch to his digital version of this old favorite and renamed it Bayview JNL.
