Butterworth was designed to reflect the dying, degraded and worn, hand painted signs I had seen around the old Butterworth ferry terminal in Penang Malaysia. I plan for Butterworth to be the first of many Malaysia inspired typefaces.

A three-dimensional all-cap font for title use, Thorowgood Sans Shaded was released by the Fann Street Foundry of W. Thorowgood & Co. in 1839. Interestingly, it more closely resembles Figgins' Four-Line Emerald Sans-Serif Shaded of 1833 than Fann Street’s own Grotesque Shaded of 1834 (with light and shadow reversed). The idea of a shaded font is of an outline font whose letters have each been extruded through a die and then viewed from the lower right to reveal the third dimension. That third dimension has also been referred to as a shadow. Vincent Figgins' 1815-release of a shaded serif typeface was the first known of many shaded faces, as the other foundries rushed to bring out their own versions. Thorowgood Sans Shaded may be gainfully used today as a eye-catching headline font, just as it was so popularly used in the early nineteenth century. To assist with the usual all-cap letter-spacing problem, the following pre-kerned pairs are included: AT, AV, AW and AY. Havel is an updated interpretation of a Czech type design from the 1930s. It is powerful and very condensed. At a quick glance you might find kinship with other condensed typefaces of the same period, like Spire (Sol Hess, 1937), Onyx (Gerry Powell for ATF, 1937) or Quirinus Bold (Alessandro Butti, 1939). But Havel has its very own look, rooted in the rapidly disappearing "Eastern European Type", a typographical tradition where poster and packaging design were the highlights. Torbjörn Olsson has revived this classical Czech beauty, and the Open Type version, Havel Pro, can also be used for Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian.

Plywood is based on a long lost American film classic: Franklin Typefounders's Barker Flare from the early 1970s. Plywood is a surprisingly effective mix between the rigid confidence of nineteenth century wood types and the smooth feminine curves of twentieth century art nouveau ideas. With many variations on almost every letter in the alphabet, it's a versatile typeface that can make itself timelessly at home in multiple design environments, with motifs ranging from the strong and western to the crafty and artsy. Isaac Newton, father of the theory of gravity, used several forms of handwriting in his life, in numerous texts about numerous scientific subjects. Here, we propose a handwritten font, using a particularly legible script form, coming from texts written in 1672, the year he presented a new reflecting telescope to the Royal Society. It is a Pro font containing Western, Eastern, Central and Northern European, Icelandic, Baltic, and Turkish diacritics. The alternates and ligatures allow the font to look as closely as possible to the real thing. This font, was created -- inspired from the original manuscript of the French revolutionary song “La Marseillaise”, becoming later the French national anthem, composed in one night (1792 April 25th) by the 32 year old French captain, Rouget de Lisle. The ITC Stone Sans II typeface family is new from the drawing board up. Sumner Stone, who designed the original faces in 1988, recently collaborated with Delve Withrington and Jim Wasco of Monotype Imaging to update the family of faces that bears his name. Sumner was the lead designer and project director for the full-blown reworking – and his own greatest critic. The collaborative design effort began as a relatively simple upgrade to the ITC Stone Sans family. As so often happens, however, the upgrade proved to be not so simple, and grew into a major design undertaking. “My initial intent,” recalls Sumner, “was to provide ITC Stone Sans with even greater versatility. I planned to add an additional weight, maybe two, and to give the family some condensed designs.” As Sumner began to look more closely at his twenty-year-old typeface, he decided that it would benefit from more extensive design improvements. “I found myself making numerous refinements to character shapes and proportions,” says Sumner. “The project scope expanded dramatically, and I’m pleased with the final result. The redesign has improved both the legibility and the overall appearance of the face.” The original ITC Stone Sans is part of the ITC Stone super family, along with ITC Stone Serif and ITC Stone Informal. In 2005 ITC Stone Humanist joined the family. All of these designs have always offered the same three weights: Medium, Semibold, and Bold – each with an italic counterpart. A WPA (Works Progress Administration) sponsored Water Carnival taking place in Central Park in the 1930s had "Department of Parks, City of New York" in the thin Art Deco hand lettering which is now available as Parks Department JNL.

I saw an old logo for Giro d'Italia on telly, and was just smitten by the truly ugly type: just ruler and compass work, no intakes or optical corrections whatsoever. I just had to turn that into a font.

Vesta™ was originally designed as an orientation and information system for the city of Rome, the birthplace of the roman alphabet. The forms are inspired by letterforms found on a frieze in the Vesta temple in Tivoli. Vesta has more contrast than the average sans serif but, like many of other designs of Gerard Unger, let in a lot of light - the letterforms are open, the counters generous. Relatively narrow and hence economical - without feeling too compressed - Vesta is an ideal solution for newspapers and magazines, and numerous other applications, including corporate identity and more. Big Vesta was intended as Vesta's display partner. However, it also performs very well at small sizes - its large x-height and short ascenders and descenders make it particularly economical, making it ideal when space is limited; for example on a mobile display. Vesta and Big Vesta are now available in seven weights - from Light to Black - and include everything necessary for setting extended texts well: italics, small caps, and a range of figures, including old style, lining, and tabular figures.
