  1. Saffron Walden by Hanoded, $15.00
Saffron Walden is a small market town in Essex, England. When I created my first ever connected script font, I decided that a 'flowery' name would be best (since that seems to be the most popular choice for connected fonts….). Saffron Walden is a fattish, inky brush font, with a slight tilt to the right. It would be perfect for book covers, magazines, headlines and posters, but could also be used for packaging. 4. DeForme by Ingo, $39.00
A deconstructive variation of ”Clarendon“ DéFormé was born out of the distortion of the time-honored ”Clarendon“ letterforms, in which the stems and thin strokes have been reversed. Thus, a typeface was created which will remind some readers of a Western typeface, and others of the ordinary typeface of a typewriter. Actually, it is still a robust Clarendon, which has survived ists disfigurement quite well. DéFormé, like its ”mother“, is easily legible, in spite of the inherent emphasis which one is not used to seeing.

Franko Luin, Carniola's designer, on this typeface: Carniola is a pastiche of different type designs from the beginning of the 20th century, mostly American. What fascinated me seeing, a couple of letters, in Bob Roy Kelly's book (American Wood Type:1828-1900) were the little squares in the corners that represent a glow from lighting coming from below and from the right. Such ambiguity excited me and I thought that today with digital resources it wouldn't take long to do it. Seeing it working is excellent. Look In the posters what it is for and the effects it produces, including the sensation of relief.- L.S.
