Fnord is a contemporary humanist serif typeface, it is ideally suited for display purposes, titling, headline copy and branding. The family has been designed to be highly versatile, containing a total of 23 fonts. Each font features discretionary ligatures, swash alternates and true small caps. The overall design is clean and simple with a little bit of rebelliousness thrown in for good measure – Fnord does not conform to the traditional serif blueprint. I was re-reading their work while sketching the initial letterforms and realised that some of the proportions and angles were coinciding with some themes that run through the books – particularly the numbers 5, 17, 23, 40 and 93, which are key to this font family’s spacing and geometry. I found it both very interesting and enjoyable to play with a specific theme and purpose for creating this typeface. I am sure you will enjoy working with it in your own design projects. In 1968, Adrian Frutiger was commissioned to develop a sign and directional system for the new Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. Though everyone thought he would want to use his successful Univers font family, Frutiger decided instead to make a new sans serif typeface that would be suitable for the specific legibility requirements of airport signage: easy recognition from the distances and angles of driving and walking. The resulting font was in accord with the modern architecture of the airport. In 1976, he expanded and completed the family for D. Stempel AG in conjunction with Linotype, and it was named Frutiger. Darmhagh Underwood is a “rough” monowidth font based on the face used on the old Underwood manual typewriter. Darmhagh Underwood was first digitized in 1999 by Michael Everson and originally used the MacGaelic character set on the Macintosh platform, and ISO/IEC 8859-14 on the PC. In 2008 Darmhagh Underwood version 3 was released in OpenType format, completely compliant with Unicode encoding and with an extended character set. The particular Underwood typewriter from which samples were taken to design Darmhagh Underwood is on display in the National Library of Ireland. A hand lettered emulation of a Roman stencil type face on the cover of the folio for the Stenso School Set was the basis for Eutaw Stencil JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. The Stenso School Set (circa 1940-41) was comprised of three stencils – two lettering guides and a map of the [then] 48 United States. Developed and patented by Baltimore school teacher Ruth Libauer Hormats, her stencils were the first to offer a system for accurate letter spacing and ease of use. “Eutaw” (as part of the font’s name) is taken from Eutaw Place, the street where Ruth and her husband lived at the time of Stenso’s inception. To the Cherokee, the name means “Creek Indian”.

Stobart is a script font based on the characters written in a letter by Mr Henry Stobart, dated 1899. It contains over 1200 individual glyphs, supports the extended latin character set and includes a total of 8 different alphabet sets to make up the extensive OpenType contextual substitution needed to make the font appear as genuinely handwritten as possible. It is for this reason that Stobart is an exclusively OpenType font and is intended for use in an application that has advanced OpenType support, although it should be said that the font will work (as in appear) in any application on any operating system that supports the OpenType font format, albeit without all those delightful features that make it a connected script.

Vallassina is named after Vallassina, a village in the valley of the upper tract of the river Lambro in northern Italy. The most important settlement in the area is the town of Asso, from which the valley takes its name. Spasell is a slang of Insubric language, spoken until 19th century by inhabitants of Vallassina, when they used to go out from the valley for business and they didn't want to be understood by the people. What makes this valley unique is that the locals use a unique whistle language to communicate to each other. Vallasina is confidently irreverent yet curiously attractive. As a unique example of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Victorian type, Zinc Italian emits a strikingly beautiful and twinkling luminescence. Oversized initial caps, each containing intricate swirls and curlycues, vibrate stunningly alongside a variety of amusing lowercase letters. Also known as Zinco, this typeface is generously equipped with a charming set of alternate characters including capital figures and some easier-to-decipher lowercase letters. Zinc Italian with Alternates is also available in the OpenType Std format. Some new features including discretionary ligatures and expanded standard ligatures have been added to this OpenType version. Nucleometer is a very contrasting and at the same time elegant display font. It is ideal for large headlines and impressionable typography. Canterbury Old Style Pro is a two-weight serif font family with a small x-height. In 1920, Morris F. Benton designed the original weight for American Type Founders (ATF).
