The idea for Gilman started simple enough, a serif typeface that works well for large amounts of text. However, after many struggles creating a quality typeface digitally, I decided to first draw the complete alphabet by hand on paper, and then trace that digitally. In 1525, Albrecht Dürer, the well known German great artist, was publishing the so-called “Underweysung der Messung mit dem Zirckel und Richtscheyt”, printed in Nuremberg. This handbook explained with numeral figures how to draw with a compass and ruler. A large part is devoted to the drawing of Roman characters, which can be used as decorative initials. We are offering two complete historical initial sets and also have entirely redrawn the missing letters: J, U and W, Eth, Lslash, Thorn and Oslash in the two forms, using the Dürer style. The font may be used with all our Humane and Garalde fonts, like 1543 Humane Jenson or 1592 GLC Garamond and others from the GLC foundry catalog.

This Font is born basing itself on several standard typographic models. Inspired by our calligraphic drawings, the idea was to synthesize these many shapes into a unique font that can be used commonly. The slab base has been gradually humanized. The serifs have been carved, refined, rounded off, in order to galvanize the font and ease the task of reading in lower case. The angle of attack of the round letters is an echo of the 15 Century typographic heritage. It was important for us to create an expressive and humanized font, which could also be used for edition. The purpose was to confront the Ancient typographic canon of beauty with some funny and fancyful elements.

The Vitruvian Man is a world-renowned drawing created by Leonardo da Vinci circa 1487. The drawing depicts a male figure in two superimposed positions with his arms and legs apart and simultaneously inscribed in a circle and square. The drawing and text are sometimes called the Canon of Proportions or, less often, Proportions of Man.The drawing is based on the correlations of ideal human proportions with geometry described by the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius in Book III of his treatise De Architectura. Vitruvius described the human figure as being the principal source of proportion among the Classical orders of architecture. In 1929 Chauncey Griffith at Mergenthaler commissioned W.A. Dwiggins to design a warmer and less mechanical Geometric Sanserif to compete with Futura. Dwiggins’ best efforts proved that human warmth had little to do with cool geometry; for twelve years, until the introduction of Spartan, Mergenthaler lost ground to Intertype’s licensed version of Futura.

Red began as an experiment, and turned into a larger project. Most super-black type designs are constructed of extremely simple and geometric elements. Handmade Dropshadow JNL was modeled from lettering found on a vintage silk screened metal sign used for point-of-sale marketing. Before the advent of computers and modern techniques, silk screens were hand cut using material called frisket and knife tools, and the lettering reflected the human inconsistencies of cutting these lettering into the template surface for transfer.

CA Coronado is a nice display font for use in titles, logos and headlines. With its used look it creates a friendly and human feeling. Upper- and lower-case characters differ in details and can be mixed to get a vivid look. For the best authentic look, the ‘Regular’ can be used as filling and complements the Shadow-style.

This typeface was developed for the Different Ground exhibition identity (and that explains the name of the font). The aim was to make an absolutely geometric, constructed font. Sometimes even too geometric and too much into it's own rules. But at the same time to make it look very humane, sometimes imperfect and weird, but alive and not soulless.

PT Nature by Paratype is a collection of scripts based on handwriting of real people. Text set in PT Nature looks genuine and human. The fonts are a great fit for advertisement and packaging designs as well as for informal communications. PT Nature was created by Gennady Fridman and Isabella Chaeva with help from the Paratype design team.

Adonis New is a considerate update of the Adonis serif. This dense serif with smooth lines has new, bolder styles, and it supports Greek now. In addition, Natalia Vasilyeva reworked the main styles and made them fresher and more accurate. Adonis New works well in bookset, particularly in fiction and humanities. Body Art is a unique font whose upper-case and lower-case characters are formed by combining the silhouettes of two to four men and women of different figures and sizes to form the letters of the alphabet.
