During a ‘type walk’ at the 2007 AtypI conference in Brighton, typographer Phil Baines pointed out what he considered to be a particularly egregious example of over-decorative art nouveau lettering on a war memorial. This made me determined to use it as the basis for a font. Released in Opentype, it now features ligatures, swashes and alternates. It’s not certain if the curved top bars on the E and F are a feature of the original design or due to climbers using them as footholds, but I incorporated them anyway. It has recently been used for invitations and supporting print material for formal charity dinners at the House of Lords.

Stripes is a caps only font and does not contain additional ligatures, because there is an easy way to create as many of them as you like. To form a ligature, convert your word or word string into vectors. Activate the corner points of the straight lines (not the round ones) of a letter and drag them over the next or the previous letter. This way you can create any ligature of your own. Beware of overkilling, it could decrease the legibility of your text. Besides the normal J, Stripes contains a stylistic alternate which should be used to avoid ugly gaps between critical letter pairs (see pdf document).

Teaspoon was originally designed by Haley Fiege as a project-specific font in 2007, then completed and produced by Canada Type for commercial viability in 2008. Words that look good set in Teaspoon include puppies, rainbows, salmonella poisoning and Tom Cruise. Tierra Script is a connected script typeface with a simple structure and organic contour. Its naivety and fluency makes it easy to read and close to everyone. Normally, a short paragraph or two on this page tells the backstory to a font design. In this particular case, that story has been lost to time. Whatever the original source – whether a vintage bit of typography or an original idea – the beginnings of this font lay unfinished for quite a while as it was perceived to duplicate another previous release. However, after recently checking a sample of the design against other Jeff Levine Fonts, it’s reasonably certain this type face may have similar characteristics, but can stand on its own merit. Bodoni Campanile Pro is a font that bridges the gap between a “fat” and a compressed traditional serif typeface. It was originally designed in 1936 by Robert H. Middleton for Ludlow. International TypeFounders exclusively licensed the family from the Ludlow Collection, and Steve Jackaman (ITF) produced a digital version in 1998. Jackaman completely redrew the font for its 2017 release. Bodoni Campanile Pro, much like its transitional status as a font, is successful in both formal and casual roles. The free-flowing aspects of the family, seen especially in the lowercase ‘g’ and the leg of the uppercase ‘R,’ give the family an air of elegance.

Francker is a sans-serif, based on clean and simple design principles that betray its Danish origin. Its curves are based on the “super ellipse”, a mathematical shape about half-way between an ellipse and a rectangle. Rimbomba is a freehand style font with long ascenders and descenders and a steep slant making it elegant yet casual.
