New foundry on the block, Hooper Type, kicks off it's catalogue with a versatile, story-telling serif font. Living from 1545 in Lyon, France, the famous punchcutter Robert Granjon created a typeface that looked like his own handwriting. The first book printed with this font, in 1557, was probably Dialogues de la vie et de la mort by Innocent Ringhier. We offer the complete typeface. It is a charming font with historical forms (long s, final s and others) and many ligatures, enriched with accented letters and other characters that did not exist in the original (thorn, eth, lslash and others), and a lot of alternates that permit rich and varying typography. Warning: all characters appear with the 1500s manual blackletter old style, especially letters “e” “r” or “h” alternate and some ending forms, and may be difficult to read at first, but it quickly becomes very easy. The font contains all characters for Baltic, Western European (Including Celtic), Eastern European, Northern European, and Turkish languages.

This family was created/inspired from the well-known Baskerville Roman and Italic typefaces created by John Baskerville, the English font designer. We were inspired by the original family sent by Baskerville’s wife after his death. The full Baskerville collection was bought by the French editor and author Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais who used it to print - in Switzerland - for the first time the complete works of Voltaire (known as the “Kehl edition” from the "Imprimerie de la société littéraire typographique"). We have used this edition, with copies from 1785, to reconstruct these two genuine historical styles. The font faces, kerning, and spacing are scrupulously identical to the original. This Pro font includes characters for Western, Eastern and Central European languages (including Celtic) and Turkish, with a complete set of small caps, standard and “long s” ligatures in each of the two styles.

In 1972, VGC released two typefaces by designer friends Dick Jensen and Harry Villhardt. Jensen’s was called Serpentine, and Villhardt’s was called Venture. Even though both faces had the same elements and a somewhat similar construct, one of them became very popular and chased the other away from the spotlight. Serpentine went on to become the James Bond font, the Pepsi and every other soda pop font, the everything font, all the way through the glories of digital lala-land where it was hacked, imitated and overused by hundreds of designers. But the only advantage it really had over Venture was being a 4-style family, including the bold italic that made it all the rage, as opposed to Venture’s lone upright style. One must wonder how differently things would have played if a Venture Italic was around back then. Chopper is Canada Type’s revival of Venture, that underdog of 1972. This time around it comes with a roman, an italic, and corresponding biform styles to make it a much more attractive and refreshing alternative to Serpentine. Chopper comes in all popular formats, boasts extended language support, and contains a ton of alternate characters sprinkled throughout the character map.

For some time, Eric de Berranger had wanted to create a distressed typeface design - one that gave the appearance of antique printing and showed signs of wear, yet was still highly readable. He was busy designing a new face called Maxime, when an idea struck: I realized that I could use these lettershapes as the basis for my antique typeface," he says. The two faces ended up being designed in tandem. While ITC Oldbook clearly captures the flavor of aged, uneven and imperfect printing, it also meets de Berranger's goal of being exceptionally readable in text sizes. Beginning with well-drawn characters was the key, and these were carefully modeled into the distressed forms. "The process was more difficult than I originally thought," says de Berranger. "The antique letters had to be tested and modified several times to work correctly." ITC Oldbook elegantly simulates antique printing in both text and display sizes. And while stroke weights are uneven and curves are irregular, the design has remarkably even color when set in blocks of text copy. Gorodets is a symbol font based on traditional wood-painting style from the town Gorodets on Volga river, Russia. The main motifs of it are decorative flowers, birds, horses and even people, drawn in special way and painted in black, red, blue and green. The Gorodets typeface consists of 60 manually traced images divided into two parts: filled and empty ones. ITC Beesknees font is the work of David Farey. He credits a number of sources as inspirations for his work, including Pushpin Studio, Peter Max, Bob Zoell and the Marx Brothers, whose typographic titles he admired as much as their cinematic humor. He was going to name the font 'Horse Feathers' or 'Monkey Business' after Marx Brothers films, then the name got shortened to 'Business', which then got transformed to 'Beesknees'. ITC Beesknees font contains a capital and small caps alphabet.

Shortly after the preparation of the original Century, the two Bentons (father Linn Boyd and son Morris Fuller) prepared a wider version for De Vinne’s press and called it Century Broadface. In 1900 ATF released the design for general use as Century Expanded, one of the most popular and effective of typefaces, to this day the text face of the New York Daily News.

The Olaus Magnus and Olaus Bandus alphabets are inspired by the letterforms cut in the pictures and wood-cuts of Olaus Magnus great book Historia de Gentibus Septentrionalibus. This great history of the Nordic Peoples was printed in Rome in 1555 in his own printing shop there. Olaus Magnus, Catholic priest and appointed archbishop by the Pope, never returned to the now Lutheran Sweden.

Spur Wide JNL was modeled from an example of hand lettering from the antique French alphabet book L'Art du Tracé Rationnel de la Lettre. Heavy Roman style letters with spurs (often referred to as Latin) were most popular with sign painters and show card writers in the early part of the 20th century. Spur Wide JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Roos ST is a special version of the Roos family, engineered specifically for science writing. It is equipped with SciType, a combination of additional characters and OpenType programming included in the fonts to help with typesetting science text. H. de Roos during the years of the second World War, and subsequently used for a special edition of the Dutch Constitution on which Juliana took the oath during her inauguration as the Queen of the Netherlands. This design is widely regarded as de Roos's finest, and has one of the most beautiful italics ever drawn. Aside from the SciType additions, all the Roos ST fonts contain OpenType features for ligatures, ordinals, automatic fractions, and seven kinds of figures. The regular style of this family was inspired from the typeface used in Nuremberg, Germany, by Johannes Petreius in 1543 to print the famous “De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium,” the well-known mathematical and astronomical essay by Nicolaus Copernicus. Petreius was also using an original italic style, as he did for the “De Sculptura” by Gaurico Pomponio, in 1542. Unfortunately, nobody seems to know who was the punchcutter of this Jenson-style font. Also included is a title file, containing initials (without diacritics) and small caps (with diacritics). In our three styles (Regular & Italic + Titling), font faces, kerning and spacing are as closely as possible identical to the original. This Pro font is covering Western, Eastern and Central European, Baltic and Turkish languages, with standard and long-s ligatures in regular and italic styles. Both have twin-letter ligatures, but the italic style has extra (genuine) ligatures for f and t with vowels.

Flagellum Dei is Latin for ‘The Scourge of God’. It is a title given by later generations to Attila the Hun (406-453 C.E.). Flagellum Dei is also a rather scary font, which I made with the use of a stiff brush and some China ink. Of course you could use this quite versatile font to scare the bejesus out of your friends, but I’d much rather see it used on book covers, posters and album artwork.
