Coil feels comfortable like a well-worn pair of shoes. It could easily pass for an assertive industrial European sans serif of the early 1960s with its slight reverse contrast, monotonous proportions, and squared-off curves, if not for its less predictable side. What appears initially as ellipses upon closer inspection turns out to be irregular shapes, closer to an inverted egg than an oval. The s looks topsy-turvy with its higher curve that is larger than the lower. Some terminal strokes overhang the bowl (as in the a), others open flat (as in the Q, the f, the j, and the t). The resulting effect shakes up this seemingly “retro” face just to make it new. Our midcentury recollections are slightly distorted and reinterpreted by this ironic typeface making it fresh while deceptively cozy and familiar. Coil’s high x-height and even texture make it readable even in small sizes despite its tight apertures. Available in four weights with their italics, with two sets of figures, fractions, and alternates for Extended Latin and Cyrillic scripts. Tertius, with its high ascenders and clubbed serifs, is a modern interpretation of the classic Carolingian style (7th - 9th centuries AD). There was no capital form in the Carolinian hand and Roman square capitals were originally used with it. The Carolingian hand began, after a while, to develop more cursive tendencies as people looked for a way to speed up the writing process. I have “capitalized” on this trend and have devised an appropriate and dramatic set of flowing capitals for this family. With its elegant swashes and bold letter shapes, Tertius embodies the romance of medieval life, of knights, castles, and chivalry. ITC Avant Garde Gothic¿ was designed by Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase in 1970. They based it on Lubalin¿s logo for Avant Garde Magazine - an exciting construction of overlapping and tightly-set geometric capitals. ITC Avant Garde is a geometric sans serif; meaning the basic shapes are constructed from circles and straight lines, much like the work from the 1920s German Bauhaus movement. Trigomy is a proportional pixel font designed on a 5 pixel grid. It is intended for either very small text or as huge display font for posters and the like. To get a crisp look this font should be used at 10 pt or multiples of 10 pt. (A tip for Adobe Creative Suite applications is to change the standard anti-aliasing method from “sharp” to “crisp” and to align the text to whole pixels. Also avoid centered text.) To get started with type design I thought it was best to start with a pixel font because you don't have to focus much on the design itself, but rather have to focus on how kerning and spacing works and the various features you can implement with OpenType. And of course I wanted to have a pixel font that had all that I was missing from other pixel fonts. We were learning trigonometry at the time I started designing Trigomy, and most of the time I misspoke it “trigometry”. So, when I had to come up with a name for my first font I thought: "Why not go with Trigomy?"

My affection for Slab Serifs began in the early 1960s in Kansas City when Rob Roy Kelly was at the Kansas City Art Institute, teaching and writing his book on American Wood Type. I got to know him just well enough to gain access to his fabulous collection of wood type and wood type catalogs. Later, in the1970s, I tried to re-create a Nebiolo Egiziano for Roger Black at New West magazine. And again for Roger, in the 1980s, I designed a Slab Serif logo for Newsweek Magazine. Finally, in 2003, designed the Sutro Family. There were things I didn't like about it, so, over time, I’ve been adding some things and dressing it up a little. Sutro Shaded has existed for a few years as a one color, outlined, drop-shadowed display font. It seemed like it was just dying for a little color. I added five more fonts: Fill, Gradient, Hatching, Rules and HiLite. These fonts can be used in different combinations to achieve various effects. Linotype Punkt, from US designer Mischa Leiner, is part of the TakeType Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contest 1999 for inclusion on the TakeType 3 CD. This font, from US designer Mischa Leiner is available in three weights, light, regular and bold. The basic forms are those of a robust sans serif, however the figures are composed of evenly placed dots, hence the name Punkt, the German word for dot. This distinguishing characteristic lets this font look as though it appears on a background of light. One other unique trait of this font is the nature of the three weights. The figures of each weight have exactly the same measurements, the same width, breadth, etc. The only variable measurements are those of the individual dots making up the forms, making the bold weight much darker than the light while retaining the same outer contours. Linotype Punkt should be used in larger point sizes, as when it is too small the dots blur together and rob the font of its 'light'. The font is therefore best for headlines in large and very large point sizes.

Gabby is an authentic handwriting of a First Grader. I took all the papers from her backpack during her first grade year and scanned in various letters, cleaned them up, and turned them into a font. This font is how I captured memories of my daughter's handwriting. This font is perfect for projects requiring the handwriting of a child, such as kid-friendly t-shirts and school projects.
