For decades, the soft glow of a neon sign beckoned weary travelers to roadside rest courts, told the hungry individual where to eat; let enthusiastic revelers know where the night life was happening. There is something special about a neon sign, yet changing times, city ordinances and even technology itself is turning this staple of urban life for over a hundred years into a museum piece. Night Sign JNL emulates the craft of hand-formed neon signage and it (along with a few added special effects) can really add some good-old-fashioned pizzazz to a print or web project.

Clumsy is a two weight all caps handcrafted awkward font with alternates for all characters and digits. The font was inspired by a few lines of text from an old soviet book about vine. Clumsy is a good choice for small amounts of text. When Clumsy is used in OpenType applications, its Contextual Alternates feature produce a striking random-like effect on glyphs distribution, achieved by cycling through alternates. When not using the Contextual Alternates feature, you can still pick the alternates in the Glyphs palette or use the alternates available from the keyboard upper and lower case.

Rasteroids Old is a typographic flashback to computing of the early 1980s, when 7-pin dot-matrix printers were the state of the art, and most home computer displays were TVs hooked up to RF modulators. Rasteroids Old not only captures the dot-matrix printer look, but recreates the rasterized appearance of text on those lower-resolution monitors. Rasteroids Old is a fixed width font lacking any descenders. Furthermore, the character set is limited to the subset of US-ASCII that would be available on a typical machine of 1980. As such, it is not intended for large areas of copy.

Taro Why do designers make more and more geometric fonts? There are already many geometric sans in the world. Because It is a natural flow of design. It is true that we like geometric type instinctively. Taro was designed to archive a good balance between the following three things geometrically. 1. To be Natural, Flowing, Organic. 2. To be Neutral, Unbiased, Universal. 3. To be legible, distinguishable, readable. Consists of eight weights and their matching italics. Supporting almost all latin languages. All-caps text for one line or a few is as wonderful as normal mixed-case typesetting.

XyloScript is my first script with a woodcut look to it. Still, it is very elegant. Xylo is Greek and means “wood”. This script is another one I designed in the tradition of the 18th-century English calligrapher George Bickham and the 19th-century American calligrapher Platt Rogers Spencer. I like it, your very crafty Gert Wiescher BTW if your font manager tells you that the font is corrupted, just ignore that! This script is very complex and that’s causing some font managers to say the font is corrupted. I have tested it and it works fine!

Since I am still in a Japanese mood, I decided to name this font after my favourite pastime in Japan: hunting for the smallest, nicest sushi bar in town. After all, there’s just nothing like eating freshly made sushi and washing it all down with a cup of green tea or a warm sake. Sushi Bar is a very detailed brush font - all caps, but upper and lower case differ and can be mixed. It is an ideal font for posters, albums, headlines and book covers. Comes with a bento box full of diacritics as well!

Mixed designs of Futura and Bodoni (Fudonis) are quite popular. Apart from being contemporary, such fonts provide excellent readability. Cosmic Sans was my first font ever created for a school project. The class I made this font for was my Advanced Typography and was a semester project. I really couldn't think of a title for this font, until one of my good friends said, "Why don't you name it Cosmic Sans?" I searched the internet for any other fonts with that name, and sure enough there wasn't. Thus the name stuck. I've had a lot of lovely cakes through the years (My wife is a great cook!) But I've also tried some really...ehem...not so good cakes. Actually, the worst cake I ever had, was at work - if you didn't know, I work as a kindergarten teacher - and the cake was made by one of the kids! Anyway, this font was made as a sort of tribute to that cake - the font may not represent something that is smooth and lovely, but it was made with lots of personality and love - just like that cake from that kindergarten kid!

Linotype Zensur is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. This fun font was created by French designer Gérarld Alexandre and contains one weight. The characters look as though parts of each of them were censored or removed, leaving just enough left over to know what was meant. Originally I called this font YearInYearOutYoureInUrine, but I was told that that name was too long and maybe not in good taste. I settled for WaterCloset when it was first released, but then renamed it with a more appropriate title. It is caps only but the letters on the lower-case keys differ from those on the upper-case keys. It comes with a large assortment of accented letters to support most European languages. Although you certainly would not want to use it for formal invitations, when bad taste is called for, it might be ideal.

My wife was watching ‘Memoirs Of A Geisha’ the other day, and I am going to take my son Sam to see Japan in May this year, so when I started drawing out the glyphs for this font, the name was already chosen! Linotype Nowe Ateny is part of the Take Type Library, which features the winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest from 1994 to 1997. Designed by Dariusz Nowak-Nova, Nowe Ateny is a frantic handwriting font whose capital letters include technical-looking grid lines and end points. These seem to anchor the letters without reducing their volatility. The font consciously lacks elements which increase legibility, sacrificing them for the sake of more design oriented ideals. Nowe Ateny is thus good for headlines in larger point sizes, especially when the look of the text is as important as its content.

Adrian Frutiger designed Egyptienne F for the Deberny & Peignot Foundry in 1956. This was the first of several Egyptians designed by Frutiger, see also Glypha and Serifa. “Egyptian” or “Egyptienne” is a typographic designation for roman typefaces with slab (or square or rectangular) shaped serifs; and those that have bracketing between main stroke and serifs (like this one) are known as “Clarendon-style Egyptians”. Egyptienne F has a medium x-height and excellent character spacing for setting text in small point sizes. Legible, flexible, and neutral in appearance, Egyptienne F is a good choice for books, magazines, and on-screen presentations.

Op-art never looked so good. Taking a cue from the popularity in the 1970s of deco Prismas and their related contemporary interpretations, this geometric font updates the trend. Overlap text in different colours or black and white for eye-teasing moiré combinations. An image above illustrates the use of Dazzle Underprint, a uniform-width version of the font that is placed under Dazzle and used to create two-colour effects simply and easily. First Prize typeface has simple shapes. It is a narrow, heavy sans serif typeface with geometrical logic and quite predictable constructions of characters. The idea behind it was to combine constructed structure of the skeleton and some calligraphic ideas, swashes and cursiveness. At the moment First Prize typeface consists of three narrow styles: bold, upright italic and italic. Cursive weights have beautiful ending swashes and initials.
