Pata Slab: the ultra-heavy optimism we all need in 2020 Pata Slab is the type equivalent of a catwalk stomp down a city sidewalk, a font that’s assertive, funky and more than a little sexy. Named after a colloquialism for ‘feet’, Pata features ultra-heavy slabs and contrasting hairline centers that rise from its chunky footprint. Metal Cry is a font family that was inspired by countless hours spent playing video games, watching old movies or reading comic books. And even more hours closely analysing the design of all these things. The art of creating beautiful letters has slowly declined with the rise of the digital age and its solid-colour, 2D fonts. And most of the time, the care given to typography in cultural products just isn't what it used to be anymore. This was the inspiration for Metal Cry, a family of 4 layerable fonts that can bring a feeling of depth to its letters, and offers endless possible combinations. Metal Cry Outlands is the basic shape of all the characters, it can be used as the bright side of the bevel. Metal Cry Front is the inline border font that can be used as the front side of the bevel. Vesta™ was originally designed as an orientation and information system for the city of Rome, the birthplace of the roman alphabet. The forms are inspired by letterforms found on a frieze in the Vesta temple in Tivoli. Vesta has more contrast than the average sans serif but, like many of other designs of Gerard Unger, let in a lot of light - the letterforms are open, the counters generous. Relatively narrow and hence economical - without feeling too compressed - Vesta is an ideal solution for newspapers and magazines, and numerous other applications, including corporate identity and more. Big Vesta was intended as Vesta's display partner. However, it also performs very well at small sizes - its large x-height and short ascenders and descenders make it particularly economical, making it ideal when space is limited; for example on a mobile display. Vesta and Big Vesta are now available in seven weights - from Light to Black - and include everything necessary for setting extended texts well: italics, small caps, and a range of figures, including old style, lining, and tabular figures. All in addition, Vesta is available as a family of OpenType fonts with a very large Pro character set and supports most Central European and many Eastern European languages.

Dynamic and sportive. A well-balanced experiment for sparkling headlines. Glance Slab is an experimental design that plays on the tension between connection and detachment. In this typeface, serifs may be detached and some strokes may not connect to their stems. This creates a dynamic impression of balance and movement. The elegance of an ice skater and the determination of a quarterback: Glance Sans has it all. Where a curve meets a stem and where serifs seem to “hover” near their respective letters, the nonjoining elements create an impression similar to a stencil typeface. But here, the function of the gaps differs from strictly stencil designs: while the gaps provide a “sparkling” effect in Glance Slab that’s clearly visible in large sizes, they take on the role of ink traps when set smaller, making for surprisingly legible body copy. With its strong visual character, this font family is quickly recognizable, making it perfectly suitable for branding and any large-scale application, such as posters, billboards, and event signage. Glance Slab consists of seven weights from Thin to Black. Each style has a character set of about 570 glyphs, which includes circled numbers and arrows (positive and negative versions), ligatures, extended language support, and many other features.

A complete figurative alphabet was published by one Peter Flotner (ca. 1485-1546) in 1534. In Flotner’s alphabet, naked or nearly-naked figures are posed singly or disposed in pairs to form the various letters. Unlike de Grassi’s alphabet, we find only human figures here, no other animals. And unlike Tory’s illustrations, these letters seem an end in themselves, rather than the means of demonstrating a design strategy. Flotner’s alphabet was imitated by other engravers. The letters G and N are reproduced from an alphabet published by one Martin Weygel in Bavaria in 1560. Peter Flötner , c.1485-1546, German medalist and artisan, possibly Swiss by birth. He was active in decorative sculpture, wood carving, and other crafts, making medals and plaques and furnishing designs of classical motifs for silversmiths. He was in Nuremberg by 1522 and did most of his work there, although he made two trips to Italy. Flötner is now regarded as a pioneer of the German Renaissance. His Kunstbuch was published in 1549. In the Metropolitan Museum are five of his bronze plaques illustrating biblical episodes. TagBanger WADE1 is the first in a short graffiti font series. This series will showcase the hand-styles of various mature street artists that Okaycat is working with. This first release highlights the style of one such graffiti writer, WADE1, who has an eclectic writing style after many years proliferating street art. Long-term graffiti artists develop their own style over their careers, spending as many endless hours honing their letter-forms as any full-time professional typographical artist. Style, individuality, and originality are everything. These attributes are key to the graffiti artist's tao. A writer who copies, or "bites" loses respect -- their work will be painted over or "crossed out" by all other writers. Taglio’s name is derived from intaglio, which means “incised carving” or “an impression from an engraving”. Indeed, Taglio looks like an incised engraving with a contemporary calligraphic interpretation. The down strokes start with a single horizontal line that curves into a dual vertical line and ends with the same single line at the base. The dual elongated strokes create a bold overall impression but is literally twice as sophisticated than if the two lines were solid. That was exactly the goal in creating this font. We managed to create a font that is distinctive, elegant, and crisp that is also intentionally stencilled for more flexibility. For instance, it is ideal for laser cutting signage. One of the unique features in using the capital glyphs is that they stack perfectly without losing legibility, primarily because of the slanted ends of the dual vertical lines - see the example “Miami Fashion Week” display ad. Phrygia is the Greek name of an ancient state in western-central Anatolia (modern Turkey), extending from the Eskişehir area east to (perhaps) Boğazköy and Alishar Hüyük within the Halys River bend. The Assyrians, a powerful state in northern Mesopotamia to the south, called the state Mushki; what its own people called it is unknown. We know from their inscriptions that the Phrygians spoke an Indo-European language. Judging from historical records supported by ceramic evidence, settlers migrating from the Balkans in Europe first settled here a hundred or more years following the destruction of the Hittite empire (ca. 1200 B.C.). Most of what is known about Phrygian archaeology and its language derives from excavations at the capital city Gordion, located about 60 miles southwest of the modern Turkish capital of Ankara (also a Phrygian site). Gustav and Alfred Körte first excavated Gordion in 1900. The excavators did not reach Phrygian levels, but they did reveal burials dated to the late eighth century B.C. with Phrygian ceramic, metal, and wooden artifacts. From 1950 to 1973, Rodney S. Young of the University of Pennsylvania led excavations at Gordion. Archaeological work at the site resumed in 1988 and continues to the present.

Introducing Promenade – a calligraphic serif that started on paper with a flat nib pen (see the 6th image), and blossomed into a full serif with italics. At its core, this font is just... beautiful. It's elegant, it's crisp, it's delicate, but can still hold its own. As I was creating the graphics, I just couldn't get over the flow of the letters – especially the italic. It's got class, but also isn't afraid to rock a pair of Doc Marten's. Funny enough, Jen from Tonic (they make beautiful websites) saw a preview of this font and said, "I'd take that font to prom." Which of course spurred a conversation about how this font would take a Mercedes G-Series instead of a limo, and wear Doc Marten's instead of heels, but still wear the most gorgeous dress, and that is 100% Promenade (and inspo for the name – thanks, Jen!). I've also been loving combining the regular and italic, especially for logos (see the "Friendfolk" logo) One thing to note about Promenade is the letter spacing. It was spaced for clean reading and intentional balance, so I recommend setting the spacing a little tighter if you want to create the display look found in many of the logo mockups(around -20 to -40 should do!).

ITC Tabula is meant to be read. The design grew out of a study to create a font to set film subtitles. According to Julien Janiszewski, the face's Paris-based designer, “I set parameters for the design whereby the letters had to be able to hold up at very small sizes when set on film and yet must be able to be enlarged 2000 times to be read on a theatre screen.” The subtitle font was not completed, but several months later Janiszewski revisited the design and made a discovery. “I realized that the constraints I had established for the subtitling font was not that far from those people could have in creating typographic signage. Many time this calls for a font that can be used easily in very large sizes for headlines on highway billboards and quite small for text copy.” Work proceeded for two more years before Janiszewski was satisfied with the results. The final design is a somewhat squared sans serif family of four weighs with corresponding italics. Janiszewski also wanted to create what he calls a “sensitive sans-one that is not restricted to geometric shapes but has a subtle calligraphic, foundation.” ITC Tabula is not only easy to read, it is also a distinctive and handsome design.

The Farfa fonts were designed for institutional use, commissioned by the City of Fara in Sabina, Italy. This project started from the study of the manuscripts found in the Abbey of Farfa, penned in a variant of the lower case of “Carolingian” typical style of that area. The Capital, ligatures and Small Caps, however, are based on the uncial writing that often appears in those codes and manuscripts. Farfa Abbey is a territorial abbey in northern Lazio, central Italy. It is one of the most famous abbeys of Europe. It belongs to the Benedictine Order and is located about 60 km from Rome, in the commune of Fara Sabina The origin of the Abbey is still unknown. Archaeological discoveries seem to prove that the first monastic establishment was built on the ruins of a pagan temple. The Vandals destroyed the first monastery in the fifth century. Only a few documents from the sixth-century prove the early presence of the monastic community. It had the heritage of Charlemagne (S VIII), the Lombard chiefs, and later the Carolingians, succeeded in withdrawing Farfa from obedience to the Bishops of Rieti, and in securing many immunities and privileges for the monastery. Farfa was at this period the most important monastery in Italy both from the point of view of worldly possession and ecclesiastical dignity.

When I designed Akagi in 2007, I wanted this new sans serif to "smile" at you — with this new expansion, I hope you smile back. Akagi Pro is economical while keeping a distinctive, expressive personality on the page that distinguishes it from among many of the mechanical/rigid/emotionless sans out there without becoming cliché. Perfect for the page and the screen, the flexible weights available allow for pinpoint selection at whatever size. Each style of Akagi Pro has a robust character set made even more functional with expansive OpenType features. A typesetter's dream — case-sensitive punctuation, tabular and proportional variants of lining and oldstyle numerals, true italics, small caps, expansive language support, an alternate 'g' and 'y', highlight a wealth of features of the typeface. This versatility infused within Akagi Pro will allow it to assume both roles of the utilitarian workhorse and light-hearted go-to typeface — and make the user happy.

Some time ago I bought my smallest book ever: Kate Greenaway’s Alphabet* 57 x 72 mm. I thought it was the sweetest little book I had ever seen. Not knowing about the fame of the designer Kate Greenaway (1846-1901), I put it in some dark drawer and looked at it from time to time. Kate’s books were all outstanding successes in English publishing history; she was an icon of the Victorian era. Some of those books are still being reprinted today. This little gem I had accidentally acquired has become very rare and I have not found any reprints yet. So I thought maybe I could adapt her drawings for use on today’s computers. I ventured to redraw her delicate illustrations, blowing them up 300 percent, being forced to simplify them without losing her touch. It took quite some time! While redrawing them, I discovered that she most certainly drew them in at least three different sessions as well. Then I scanned my drawings and put them in a font. To make the font more usable, I added the ten numerals in Kate’s style; the original does not have those. I hope she would have liked my adaptations. The Times Europa Office family is designed after the model of the original serif family produced by Walter Tracy and the Linotype Design Studio in 1974. A redesign of the classic Times New Roman typeface, Times Europa was created as its replacement for The Times of London newspaper. In contrast to Times New Roman, Times Europa has sturdier characters and more open counter spaces, which help maintain readability in rougher printing conditions. Times Europa drastically improved on the legibility of the bold and italic styles of Times New Roman. Overall, text set in Times Europa is easier to read, and quicker to digest. Akira Kobayashi, Linotype’s Type Director, brought Times Europa up to speed for the new millennium in 2006. Now optimized for office communication instead of newspaper design, Times Europa Office offers a familiar yet refreshingly new appearance for serif text. Because of The Times of London’s specific printing conditions in the early 1970s, Times Europa originally had some intentional errors built into its letterform design. These inconsistencies created an even image in newspaper text in the long run. However, these design elements bear no role on modern office communication and its needs. Kobayashi redrew these problem forms, eliminating them completely. Now Times Europa’s font weights appear clearer and easier to read than ever before.

Banana Yeti is a brush script typeface with a condensed vertical slant, inspired by a handmade sample drawn by the calligrapher Ross Frederic George and depicted in Speedball 1947 Textbook Manual. Banana Yeti has a vintage brush script look, perfect for food packaging, display and logo design and period advertising. The original design has been completely reworked and extended by the Zetafonts Masterclass 2016 Team to provide three lighter weights, and a monoline variant, as well as to produce an extended character set with open type support for ligatures, alternates, European languages and ending swashes. Banana Yeti covers over 40 languages that use the Latin alphabet, with a full range of accents and diacritics. It comes in four weights plus a special monoline weight. Banana Yeti makes full use of Open Type ligatures to provide swashes, arching letters and a wide array of ligature characters for a more handmade, natural look. Swashes can be accessed through glyph palette or by typing one to six underscores after the letter. Typing an underscore before a phrase creates arching text; close arch with another underscore. Variant ampersands can be accessed through glyph palette or by typing multiple ampersand characters. Take care: open type features are developed using open type technology, fully compatible with Adobe software and major design softwares and OS, but not supported by every software. Elliptical The squareness of curves. That was the elliptical – in more than one sense – notion being explored in the making of FS Hackney. The squareness of curves and vertical terminals to create a gentle, soft sans serif, with a little bit of magic. A momentary thought – “It doesn’t have to be like this” – provided the spur to explore the verticals and skeletons of letterforms beyond conventional type design limits. A 12-month gestation period gave rise to a font with a larger-than-usual character set, including non-lining figures, small caps and superior and inferior numbers. It’s a collection that speaks confidently for itself. Assertive It was the Hackney carriage – the black London cab – that gave this font its name, not the north London neighbourhood. Solid, dependable, effective and built to last, FS Hackney was honed to perform in all conditions. Cool, compelling lines and a satisfying overall simplicity lend FS Hackney its assertive air. Assured, versatile and effective; just like a black cab (but without the grumbling). Machined Over a string of meetings, Jason Smith and FS Hackney designer Nick Job worked out how to infuse Nick’s sketched letterforms with Fontsmith’s familiar geniality. “Nick is very meticulous and produces very clean design work,” says Jason. “Hackney is ideal for branding as it’s very clear and its quirks are sensible ones, not odd ones, that don’t distract from the message.”
