Vermont is an outline semi slab serif created by British designer Freda Sack. The serifs of Vermont are typical of slab serif fonts, having the same stroke width as the base strokes and forming a right angle to them. The strong figures of this font still manage to seem light and airy and the marked shading makes them seem almost plastic or sculpted. This class of font appeared at the beginning of the 20th century as an advertisement typeface, rose in popularity through the 1950s and phototypesetting in the 1970s. Conference is a bold, playful sans serif, which was designed in 1978 by Martin Wait. Conference's letters are very curvaceous; many of them bulge lovingly outward from their centers. The initial idea for this font came when a friend of mine asked me to create a logo for a sports team that he was forming. Since it was a martial arts competitive sport, bold and striking lettering was needed to reflect that. When the logo was finished, I was really pleased whith the letters so I decided to create the entire font. Taurunum is made with intention to be used for display design (logos, posters, etc.), and combining the weights should give best results.

This is a 2023 redesign of Bronzo, originally designed by Rick Valicenti and Mouli Marur in 1991. With this redesign, Bronzo now has 6 new weights, for a total of 9, and 587 more glyphs than it was able to in 1991. Bronzo appears to move forward, yet remain still, via a center stroke that only sticks out on the left, a tense curve that only happens on the right, and a width that sits uncomfortably between square and rectangle. Those three things, combined with a balanced light to dark ratio, are what makes Bronzo appear tense and ready. Bronzo accepts Modernist ideals of minimal, rational construction—but it also adopts luxuriant shapes over Modernism’s sandblasted neutrality. A very straight, geometric font which reminds me of the font on a display of a cash desk. Like most of the fonts at these display, this font is made up of a 6x10 matrix (capitals: 5x7). Hint: Insert Æ or ∂ to create a filled character (6x10).

Perigord has mixed origins. It was inspired by Gutenberg’s capitals and by lettering developed by German designer Ernst Bentele, but its calligraphic antecedents go back to French initials of the Carolingian period. My affection for Slab Serifs began in the early 1960s in Kansas City with Rob Roy Kelly and his fabulous collection of wood type. In the 1970s tried to re-create a Nebiolo Egiziano for Roger Black. Again for Roger, in the 1980s I designed a Slab Serif logo for Newsweek Magazine. Finally, in 2003, designed the Sutro Family. There were things I didn't like about it, so when I did Version 2 for Open Type, I changed it around a little, making it a much nicer Sutro.

It's not everyday that you want to have dark chocolate with your favorite latté. But sometimes, as out of the ordinary as it is, it can be just the ticket. In the 1990s I drew a text face for the San Francisco Chronicle. It was based on W. A. Dwiggins’ Electra and incorporated many features of the Linotype Legibility Series: More compact, with a taller lowercase X-height, etc. That type was called Electric and it was the Chronicle’s text face for nearly a decade, surviving several redesigns. From that, I made Azuza, a more detailed and sensitive style. Azuza was recognized in the TDC2 type competition in 2001. Then it went into hibernation as a Type 1 font family. Today it is back. It’s surprising - it can take more time and effort to make something deliberately and artfully imperfect than it does to make a more conventional design. We certainly found this to be the case when designing ‘SpeedSketch’. Perhaps a more accurate name would have been ‘SlowDraw’ but that wouldn’t really capture the essence of the finished design.
