Gabor Kothay was born July 19th, 1962. He works as a graphic designer and teaches second-form art students. Typeface design was a hobby for many years but it has become an everyday routine with Fontmunkasok and Fontana Type Foundry. He lives with his wife and two daughters in a suburb of Szeged, a sunny southern Hungary town that lies on the banks of the Tisza river.

POLIGRA is an experimental typefamily and a homage to traditional printing of the pre-war era in Poland. Most of the typefaces based on traditional printing are either clean, geometric typefaces or completely distressed lettering. The POLIGRA project explored everything in between. The letters, cleaned up, redesigned where necessary, and defined in their entirety, have a friendly and warm character, as if taken out of the press. The selection of typefaces was based on theater and sports posters. All of them have blocky and geometric character, each of them is an all-caps typeface. The POLIGRA family includes 13 typefaces.

Grotesk Polski FA developed in 1998-2006, was inspired by the Polish eminent pre-WWII text typeface - Antykwa Półtawskiego. Adam Półtawski designing his antiqua had took into consideration the special qualities of Polish language. He designed unique letters: k, w, y, z and R, K, Y. Another unique element of his typeface was polygonal dot. Grotesk Polski keeps all that shapes and goes further. It is a contemporary sans serif in four cuts: Regular, Italic, Bold and Stencil. The proportions of the typeface were rebalanced to give it a neo-grotesque form with a Polish twist.

On February 15, 1926, the Display Material Company of St. Paul Minnesota patented a sign making outfit consisting of a series of stencils in various sizes and styles, paints, brushes, instructions for use and all stored inside a convenient wooden case. Sold to any business in need of making many signs at low cost, this versatile stencil set enabled many a merchant to produce posters, show cards and price tags for pennies over what a commercial sign shop would charge. Floorwalker JNL is the digital version of one of these stencil fonts, solidified into a pre-Art Deco-era typeface.

Morning News is the sister font of Evening News which I designed some years ago for use with my local newspaper Abendzeitung. Morning News is an adaption, a little bit rounder, which gives the font a much softer touch. The general design dates back to the pre-Hitler era, the time when Germany had already lost the first World War and was taking a short deadly breath to start the second big war. Palatino Arabic is a collaboration between Lebanese designer Nadine Chahine and Prof. Hermann Zapf. The design is based on the Al-Ahram typeface designed by Zapf in 1956 but reworked and modified to fit the Palatino nova family. The design is Naskh in style but with a strong influence of the Thuluth style as well. This is evident in the swash-like finials and the wide proportions of the letterforms. It is designed for use in print in both large and small sizes. The counters are wide open to allow for better readability in small sizes as well as to maintain an open and friendly appearance. The font has 1091 glyphs and includes a large number of extra ligatures and stylistic alternates as well as the basic Latin part of Palatino nova and support for Arabic, Persian, and Urdu. It also includes proportional and tabular numerals for the supported languages. Palatino Arabic wins Type Directors Club award. Each year, the New York-based Type Directors Club judges typeface designs from all over the world in their TDC2 contest. Road Stencil is a font based on painted street markings. The letters are stretched roughly six times their normal height so that when viewed from an angle, the text is seen as proportional. If you're looking to Photoshop a street scene, this is your font. This is an all caps font, but the letters were copied to lower-case for convenience. In these forms, I've preferred to use horizontal and diagonal dividers instead of verticals which can weaken the fonts readability. This font embodies a pleasant aesthetic while maintaining a coherent and believable feel. Check out the 'Rough' version of this font, which has more of a 'drawn on asphalt' look. The rough version's lower case letters have eroded alternates.

This font is based on the popular and timeless Caslon design and was carefully digitized from the pages of an early 19th century book. I was excited to see some unique design treatments of characters such as the lower case italic 'p', the question mark, and various swash caps that I had never seen before. During the conversion process, I made sure to preserve the worn look of faded ink on old paper by maintaining a subtle level of decay and opacity with each character. For missing characters not found in the book, I created new characters that were faithful to the style of the rest of the family. The German typeface artist Lucian Bernhard designed Bernhard Antiqua as the first of his many text typefaces. The first weights were produced in 1912 by the foundry Flinsch in Frankfurt am Main. Further weights followed in the 1920s, produced by the Bauersche foundry, which had acquired Flinsch in the meantime. Bernhard font is an alphabet with a marked historical influence. It brings the viewer back to the early 20th century, when the bold forms of this typeface graced advertising displays and posters. Distinguishing characteristics of this typeface are the cross of the capital W and the rounding of the capital R. Linotype's Bernhard condensed bold, with its narrow, robust forms, is best for headlines in medium and larger point sizes.

Grungy Old Typewriter is based on two typed letters, each on two pages and dated 1901. The results are eroded, rough, irregular and grungy. The final results are a vintage look. As a designer, I wanted as much flexibility as possible, so there are six versions that are designed to work together. Additionally, I decided to keep the grunge and irregularities within the shape and not include surrounding typewriter or paper marks. I leave it to the design to add those elements as desired. One note, the letter spacing is much tighter than an old typewriter. I felt that readability for modern readers suffered from the added space. Of course, you can get that same look by increasing the letter spacing in your favorite design program.
