From time to time at Tipo Pèpel we like to play like children and get our hands dirty with whatever implement that can be used to mark or draw on the walls, even if the grown-ups don’t like it. And this is more or less what happened with “Trepa” (catalan for “stencil”), a typeface with a fresh and uninhibited appearance, inspired by commercial signs and the 1950’s French art movement “Graphie Latine”. Messenger is a redux of two mid-1970s Markus Low designs: Markus Roman, an upright calligraphic face, and Ingrid, a popular typositor-era script. Through the original film faces were a couple of years apart and carried different names, they essentially had the same kind of Roman/Italic relationship two members of the same typeface family would have. The forms of both faces were reworked and updated to fit in the Ingrid mold, which is the truer-to-calligraphy one. The Messenger package is comprised of two interchangeable fonts that support Western, Eastern and Central European languages, as well as Baltic, Celtic/Welsh and Esperanto. Messenger Pro is a single OpenType font that contains the characters of both Messenger and Messenger Alt, linked by programmed features for stylistic alternates, automatic f-ligatures and class-based kerning.

Stretto (Italian for narrow) is a revival, correction and expansive update of an Aldo Novarese reverse-stress font called Sintex, which he did for VGC in 1973. Openly idiosyncratic and playfully rebellious in its design, this alphabet fuses the straights and rounds in an unusual manner, riffing on the idea of hand-made sign and wood type forms while adhering to its odd grid’s parameters. In spite of its counter-stress, its legibility is high and even, helped by its unicase forms and very distinct counters. First released in 2007, it became quite popular with film studios and nostalgia designers (Sintex was the font used for David Bowie’s Hunky Dory album and Life on Mars? single). A dozen years later we revisited it for an update. Stretto now comes with over 660 characters and includes Pan European language support.

Neon Love was designed originally for a circle coaster design with a quote by the Beatles’ “All you need is Love, Love is all you need”. The inspiration of the lettering was a neon sign style where a cursive script is kind of bended from those glass wires. The idea was to get the overall look and feel of neon signs into a font, as well as creating a good raw material to use for some further photoshop effects to enhance the visual presentation. Architype Crouwel is a collection of typefaces created in collaboration with Wim Crouwel, following his agreement with The Foundry, to recreate his experimental alphabets as digital fonts. Crouwel's most recognized work was for the Van Abbe and Stedelijk museums (1954 –72) where he established his reputation for radical, grid-based design. Stedelijk first appeared in the seminal Vormgevers poster, commissioned by the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam in 1968. Crouwel created a rigid grid system across the poster of 57 vertical by 41 horizontal lines, also forming the basis for the construction of the letterforms. Although all hand drawn, the resulting typeface had a machine-made appearance. This striking black and white poster with its visible grid became one of Crouwel's most iconic designs. Architype Stedelijk now re-creates these letterforms as a single alphabet typeface in a digital font.

A. R. Bosco made Romany for ATF in 1934, when there was much demand for script types in advertising and publishing. It was the high times of Speedball lettering, and a casual script in that fashion was naturally very welcome. It became an instant hit and was used widely for a good part of the 1930s and 1940s. Apricot is not only a revival of Bosco's work, but also a major expansion of it. It contains very effective solutions to the many problems presented by the original metal type, which had to always be tracked too wide because of the forms of some of its letters. Solving these problems was not an easy task. A comprehensive set of alternates was designed to give the user the ability to replace some forms in certain uses, and a large set of two-, three-, and even four-letter ligatures was added to solve the awkwardness of some of the more common letter pairings. The resulting work is quite delightful, especially for those who like to take advantage of OpenType technology. Apricot is the rarest kind of script in digital type these days, the kind that is upright, round, bold, feminine, and distinctly young in appearance. A birthday cake for a teenage girl can certainly benefit from these letters. So can greeting cards, family show posters, diary covers, party invitations, women's shirts, toy packaging, celebration literature, and almost anything that needs that special touch of shiny happy youth. Apricot is available in all common font formats. The Postscript and True Type versions come in 4 fonts, which include one for alternates and two for ligatures alongside the main font. I've always been in love with fat didones. That’s the reason of Posh. In search of something unique, I started this family back in 2013 with the aim of creating the fattest yet readable bodonian typeface in the market: It was a challenge, because roman fonts need generous counters (or what some call white spaces) and taking them to the extreme of inexistence attempted against the construction of many glyphs. Ears, dots, terminals and serifs always need some extra space so I had to find the exact point of boldness to make characters which have those attributes work well in the middle of those which haven't. (1) After a while, I felt I was again ‘in my element’: Big contrasted letters, sexy and elegant curves, and that Lubalinesque feeling that characterise my fonts. (2) Words written with Posh are a explosion of elegance and sensuality due to the fact that its didone attributes were exaggerated. Since it’s full of alternate glyphs, one can change and choose them until a nice block of ‘‘black’’ is achieved. (3) To accompany the regular style, I designed Posh Inline, a font with the same quantity of glyphs than the regular one; an all caps style called Posh Capitals, and also a really playful Italic version. I hope you find this one delicious like I do! This font is dedicated to all who understand letters are not just meant to be read, but also to be appreciated in group and individually. Enjoy it. NOTES (1) In example, it can be easy to design a fat letter ‘n’ with almost no counter, but really tough to make a satisfactory letter ‘s’ with serifs to match that ‘n’. The hand lettered credits from the 1931 melodrama “Safe in Hell” inspired the typeface Pre Code Movies JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. The design is strongly influenced by the popular Art Deco style of thick-and-thin characters and also features rounded corners. The font’s name comes from the early era of talking pictures and the short period before the establishment of the Hays Office in 1934 when Hollywood did not self-censor itself. Many then-taboo topics were exploited on film until Will Hays cracked down on such productions. This font family is inspired by printed work made by the Elzevir family back in the XVIIth century at Leiden (NL). They worked with material from several type designers, but further investigations sends us to the tracks of one in particular: Robert Granjon. Granjon italics were way ahead of his time, making some really beautiful signs like swashy ampersands and minuscule v letters. This font also contains old style figures in the same fashion as they were printed, like the flipped number 8 and open forms in 6 and 9. This is as much a revival as an original design, because of their weights bold and heavy (both with italics) that were inspired on some titles. In this font you can also find a lot of ligatures, small caps, diacritics and even a fleuron for each weight and variation. Leidener came up from two books: Constantini Imperiatoris (1611) and Exercitationum Mathematicarum (1657), printed by Louis and John Elzevir on their Leiden Workshop, back in the day.

Celestina is the lively spirit, just like drops of ink on a piece of paper or clouds in the sky. The same spirit is maintained by the rounded letters of the script and by the characters' small whorls. Celestina has come to life as a result of a peculiar game in which I tried to bring together the letters with different tempers with help of calligraphic instruments. I wanted to create a very light and playful font which would look like a quick inscription on a piece of paper, but would also be easy to read in a text array. As I was working on the font, my cat Celestina has been very interested in the brush painting process, and I had no other option but to name the font after her! Celestina works perfect for both Moomins stories and personal blogs, as well as for the design of hand-made things, and even just then when you want to put yourself into a good mood!
