Of course I can point out a few countries that fit this description, but let’s not get into that. Republica Banana is a very nice, hand painted brush font. Cartes has a bit of a strange origin story, as far as fonts go. It’s a combination of ideas from 1920’s advertising and hand-painted letters from the 1500s. The typeface was designed to flow with elegance and speed yet retain a sense of the handmade. The serifs flow with indentations implying movement and terminate with inky globules that lend your copy a sense of gravitas. This typeface can be used for headlines, short texts, posters, logos, headlines, headlines in big sizes or just as easily for ad text. At large sizes, pen strokes can be seen that give the typeface a touch of humanity and vigor. At smaller sizes the type is still unique, but readable.

At least, that is what I believe. Radical Fortune is a font I made after a period in my life that could have ended with a really nice sum of money in my hands - but which I didn’t take. I had to give up too much of myself and that just didn’t feel right. I made Radical Fortune to keep me from thinking too much - and, symbolically, I used a really old and cheap marker pen to draw out the glyphs!

Chevin is a contemporary rounded type family in 6 weights which was designed with functionality and legibility in mind. With its open counters and slightly condensed style Chevin can be used for text and is particularly suited to signage. Erik Spiekermann is a fan, noting that Chevin “is charming without being cute, and very legible even in small sizes because of its restrained shapes and simple construction.” Chevin is named after a hill on the outskirts of Otley in West Yorkshire. Al Harf Al Jadid is a traditional-style Arabic display typeface. Al Harf Al Jadid Two is an outline version of Al Harf Al Jadid One. Although their design is ultra bold, its forms remain a readable Naskh, in response to the needs of secular lettering for emphatic headlines and signs. Al Harf Al Jadid One and Two are characterized by a distinctive, strong baseline-stroke, reminiscent of a similar hand-rendered technique traditionally used in Arabic calligraphy to achieve a bold appearance. Initially developed as digital fonts by Linotype-Hell Ltd. in the mid-1980s, Al Harf Al Jadid One and Two have remained amongst the most popular heading faces used in Arabic magazine and newspaper publication.

The grandeur of what was Miami Beach had its golden years peak in the 1940s. One of the grande dame hotels that stood at Collins Avenue and 23rd Street was the Roney Plaza; built in the 1920s and demolished around 1969. An online auction offered a pair of gummed labels provided by the hotel to be used by their guests for shipping souvenir packages back home, thus also giving the hotel a promotional plug. Jeff Levine not only created two typefaces from this hand-lettered label - Old Miami Beach JNL and Old Miami Beach Nights JNL (a solid black version), but painstakingly recreated the look of the label for the promotional flag and banner for the fonts.

The 1930s era French textbook on lettering "100 Alphabets Publicitaires déssinés par M. Moullet" featured a hand lettered chamfered alphabet with slab serifs reminiscent of sports lettering. Although intended for advertising and signage inspiration, only a partial lower case was illustrated along with the capitals and no numbers or other characters existed. These had to be created from scratch. The finished result is not only a bit of classic lettering from the past, but the font also doubles as a typeface with a sports look and feel. Novecento Carved is a layered font family. It is designed to be paired with the 2013 version of Novecento Sans , used as base layer. Each glyph of each style of Novecento Carved (around 18.000) was manually reviewed and adjusted to overcome the limitations of an automatic interpolation algorithm. Flax Regular lives in a somewhat unusual space... it is not a normal “handwriting” font, nor is it a formal script, or a rounded italic.
