The ITC Pino™ typeface family is Slobodan Jelesijevic’s second suite of commercial fonts. Although a small family of three weights, it is remarkably versatile. Like many typefaces, Pino grew out of a desire for a particular kind of design. Jelesijevic was creating a series of illustrations for a children’s magazine and needed a typeface that was lighthearted, legible and would complement his illustrative style. Unable to find exactly what he needed, he decided to make his own font. “I spent the better part of a day looking for just the right typeface,” he recalls. “Of course, the hard part was finding something that would harmonize perfectly with my drawings. A custom font was not part of the project brief or budget, but I thought that perhaps I could use it again.” The regular weight of Pino became the solution to Jelesijevic’s problem. Jelesijevic did use the font again, but quickly realized that the single weight needed companion designs. Pino Bold and Black followed in quick succession. Before licensing the designs to ITC, the three-weight family provided headlines, book cover titles and even short blocks of text copy in several of Jelesijevic’s design projects. Born in Gornji Milanovac, Serbia, in 1951, Jelesijevic graduated with a degree in graphic communication and lettering from the Faculty of Applied Arts in the University of Arts in Belgrade. Currently, in addition to typeface design, he is sought out as a graphic designer and illustrator. When not working on design projects, he teaches graphic communications at the Faculty of Art in the University of Niš, Serbia. Pino is a stressed sans of slightly condensed proportions. Pino’s generous x-height, clearly defined counters and distinctive character shapes enable it to fulfill a wide variety of typographic applications. Friendly without being sanguine, the Pino type family will communicate with charm and vitality.

Breaking from our catalog of typefaces to create a new handwritten font family, Modern Love was born out of our desire to see what would happen if we took a step back from the norm. We weren’t looking for the perfection of the many calligraphy techniques, but more of a natural way of writing with the same tools. Between the most rigid geometric letterforms and the most expressive calligraphy works there are, undoubtedly, countless combinatory possibilities. Ingeo is just one of them. Located very close to a geometric approach it shows, however, a clear willingness to accommodate in its structure the calligraphic traits of our alphabet. In Ingeo geometry grows from the inside, meaning that all its counters are based on geometric shapes. Around them, contours are later defined. The solid mass resulting from that interaction is modulated in specific areas in a way that evokes the way a writing hand finishes a letter and starts the following one. Wedding Regular was originally designed by Morris Fuller Benton for ATF and released as Wedding Text in 1901. It is a lighter version of his ENGRAVER'S OLD ENGLISH of the same period. Wedding Regular is based on the Textura style of blackletter that continued in popularity in England into the 16th century, long after the Dutch, French and Italians had moved to a Roman model that expressed the Renaissance humanism of the period. Wedding Headline is a still lighter version of the regular text face, suitable for setting larger sizes while still preserving the delicacy of the decorative hairlines. Textura continues in use in England and the United States for newspaper mastheads, gift shop signs, wedding invitations and programs and other applications where a feeling of tradition is desired. I recently saw an 1980ish photo of a “Tubby Isaac” sign in London using textura. I believe Benton’s design captures that feeling without being heavy-handed and still remaining quite readable for eyes accustomed to Roman lettering. Both Wedding Regular and Wedding Headline convey a comfortable familiarity. These two fonts may be purchased together at an attractive discount or they may be purchased separately. The two monks (alt-0172 and alt-0177) are from a set of sixteenth century decorative initial letters by Gering and Renbolt. DaiVernon is based on the handwriting of card magician extraordinaire Dai Vernon. Known as "The Professor", Vernon was a beloved expert in sleight-of-hand and card magic. These fonts are based on the penmanship in his notebooks from the 1920s, which feature almost no lowercase letters. DaiVernon Direct is based on what appears to be his hastier style, while DaiVernon Misdirect is based on his neater hand. Numerous OpenType bonus glyphs, contextual alternates and discretionary ligatures help to create the feel of his handwriting. Chaman is a “hybrid” font. On the one hand serifless, temperate and readable, and on the other hand quick and livily as a manual script, thanks to many unexpected ligatures. Letter design is plain and functional, punctuated by dynamic elements, mostly in ligatures and contextual glyphs, generated at the beginning and end of the word, thanks to your software’s OpenType features. It draws inspiration from the Tibetan alphabet, originally close to our own latin alphabet, as it stems from Bhram handwriting, itself derived from Phoenician alphabet. This alternation of stright vertical lines and regular bows makes Chaman’s design stand out.

The inspiration for Mimosa comes directly from the packaging for “Moulinard Jeune”, a line of French toiletries from the 1920s. I created the 240-odd glyphs needed to make up a complete font based upon the style of a handful of hand-lettered characters that were used on the original items. Mimosa is a mono-weight, connecting vertical script with a fairly regular set of lower case and slightly more decorative upper case glyphs. As with any decorative script, if you set copy in all caps, you will be tracked down and severely punished by the type police.

Pseudographia is a lighthearted, loving pastiche of “Greek-Style” type inspired by J.M. Bergling’s 1917 “Society Greek” lettering. Happily living in the world of kitschy cross-cultural fonts of the kind found on restaurant awnings around the US, Pseudos is blithely unconcerned with legibility.
