Stefan George (1868-1933) was a German poet who led the revolt against realism in German literature. Some 40 km north of Helsinki, surrounded by meadows and a serene Finnish lake, lies Ainola, the former home and now museum of composer Jean Sibelius (1865–1957). I know the place quite well, since it is only a stone’s throw away from the art school where I began my graphic design studies. We sometimes went there after classes—a beautiful walk, especially in spring, when the days were getting longer, the snow melting in the sun and the ice cracking on the lake. The composer often professed his love for this landscape and found constant inspiration in its moods, sounds and scents during different seasons. For many people, Sibelius and his music, most notably his famous symphonic poem Finlandia, are a symbol of Finland. I decided to name the typeface family I’m presenting here FinlandiaScript, because it owes its influence to both Sibelius’ manuscripts and the Finnish landscape around Ainola. The shape of letters, their poise and the rhythm they create resemble Sibelius’ handwriting without copying it. The letters form gently flowing lines of text which is legible without giving up individuality. The font family comes in three styles: FinlandiaScript, FinlandiaScript Bold and FinlandiaScript Frost. Together they are perfect for magazines, websites and brands aiming to create a personal and sincere image. Each of the fonts was carefully digitized from the handwriting of different homeless people who agreed to participate in this initiative. A biography/story of each homeless person captures their story, to help raise awareness and bring some dignity to the life of homeless people. Salvador was born in a small village in the province of Seville, Spain where he lived until 2002. During many years he worked in restaurants, construction, and in the fields, until he decided to go try his luck in Palma de Mallorca. There he worked in hotels and in construction, until the economic crisis erupted and he was left without work or benefits of any kind and he began to live in the street: “The street has few good things, but it teaches you to be more selfless, to share with others what you have, even if it isn’t much.” In 2006, a friend encouraged him to come along to Barcelona and bought his plane ticket. Once there, things did not go much better and he had to continue living in the street. The Sketchnote typeface was born of necessity: designer Mike Rhode needed a series of hand-drawn fonts to illustrate and produce his book, “The Sketchnote Handbook.” Because of its origin, this typeface was designed to be practical and convey the human character and quirks of his normal handwriting and hand-drawn lettering. The family is comprised of five fonts: Sketchnote Text in Regular, Bold, and Italic, the somewhat compressed and bold Sketchnote Square for headlines, and the playful Sketchnote Dingbats. Sketchnote Text is a casual script with a slightly bouncy baseline. In order to mimic the differences present in natural handwriting, OpenType features are built-in that automatically switch between multiple versions of each letter or number. In total, over 240 alternates in each of the text fonts are employed, making for a more authentic appearance. The warm texture of Sketchnote is the result of actual ink-spread on paper captured in the scans of written letterforms and was intentionally left intact during the digitization process to preserve that feeling. Rhode created Sketchnote Square as a display type to complement Sketchnote Text. Drawn instead of written, the letters often have neat little happenstance voids within the strokes. Sketchnote Dingbats features a selection of icons, rules, and arrows to provide some functional and fun tidbits, handy for bringing additional life to any design.

This font is based on an alphabet published by Luca Pacioli in his 1509 mathematical treatise De divina proportione. In this book, Pacioli describes how to build the Roman alphabet geometrically using lines, squares and circles. Pacioli was not the first or the last man in his era to describe the building of letters mathematically. Felice Feliciano did this before Pacioli, and Albrecht Dürer further developed these forms years after. According to Pacioli, the thick strokes should be 1/9th of the height, and the thin strokes should have 1/2 the weight of the thick strokes. I felt that this beautiful alphabet needed to be restored to its full geometric glory and set out to construct an accurate replica using Pacioli's instructions. Included in the font you'll find the letters that have the grid overlay and also the letters without the grid. The letters J, W, U, and Z were not included in the book, so I have created my own versions of these characters that fit into Pacioli's grid. Pacioli shows two different Os in the book, so I have included the second O as well as a second J, Q, and Z as OpenType stylistic alternates. Also included in the font are border patterns and a fleuron taken from the cover of the book.

Oscar Guerrero found inspiration for Vala in shop window lettering near his home in Bogotá, Colombia. “The capital A, R and V caught my attention and I photographed the window for future reference,” he explains. “Later I started to draw more letters inspired by the ones in the window.” Guerrero admits that he has always admired the work of Giambattista Bodoni and allowed his classic Didone designs to infuse Vala. Striking contrast in stroke weights, lively ball-terminals and a large x-height give Vala the grace and force of a Waikiki wave. Not satisfied with just a basic character set, Guerrero also took advantage of OpenType’s capabilities and drew a complete set of swash capitals, a bevy of fancy ligatures, and a suite of lowercase alternative designs. The result is that Vala easily emulates custom lettering in posters, headlines and logotypes. The “romantic” part of Vala? Guerrero dedicated the design to his girlfriend, Valentina, and named it after her.

Didot is a name given to a group of typefaces named after the famous French printing and type producing family. The classification is known as modern, or Didone. The typeface we know today was based on a collection of related types developed in the period 1784–1811. Firmin Didot cut the letters, and cast them as type in Paris. Along with Giambattista Bodoni of Italy, Firmin Didot is credited with establishing the use of the "Modern" classification of typefaces. The types that Didot used are characterized by extreme contrast in thick strokes and thin strokes, by the use of hairline serifs and by the vertical stress of the letters. As in the extreme contrasts of the literature of Molière, in Didione's typefaces, thick and thin strokes, straight and curved, are the most relevant characteristic for an era marked by the changes.

Etalage Script was drawn for the first time in the year 2000, based on a early 20th century lettering stencil with what farmer Boelema at Lalleweer stenciled his grainsacks. Eventually the script letter was developed as a typeface with a wink to the ‘lost’ display types for the ‘display window’ of graphic designer Ariënne Boelens, who in exchange made the website www.lalleweer.nl. What originated the Ariënne should be evident now.

Bernhard Modern was designed in 1937 by Lucian Bernhard for ATF. It is his personal version of the small x-height engravers’ old styles popular at the time. A perennial best-seller, Bernhard Modern remains popular in a wide variety of design and typesetting uses more that 60 years after its initial release. Bitstream’s version offers a wide array of typographer sets, including alternates, extensions, small caps and italic swashes.

Nadia is an original design by Alex Kaczun. It is a modern stencil interpretation of Granjon Oldstyle, highlighted by large elongated serifs, generous proportions and a large x-height. It is an elegant display for headlines as well as text. Named after his daughter, Nadia has a distinctively vibrant and baroque quality which some would even call sensuous. It’s a truly unique stencil treatment characterized by crisp, clean, rounded shapes.

Be it a blessing or a curse, when a type designer sees a shape that could be interpreted as a letter, his/her mind is off and running. My parents loved to travel; Dad drove to Florida seven different years, winding on (barely) two-lane “highways” clinging to the hills of Kentucky and Tennessee. Locarno is the work of British designer Alan Meeks and is his adaptation of Rudolf Koch's original design for the Klingspor type foundry. The unique design of the roman weight features geneous capitals and a reserved lowercase. The italic capitals have an open, engraved decoration that combines perfectly with the lowercase with its tall, elegant ascenders. Locarno is a typeface with the sophisticated look of the 1920s and 30s.

Andrea Tartarelli discovered the letterforms that would inspire his Gronau family in a 1912 specimen that showcased the typeface Fette Reichs-Deutsch, designed by Wilhelm Gronau in 1902. Fette Reichs Deutsch has been digitised by Tartarelli as Gronau Fette. With Gronau Neue, Tartarelli tried to find a contemporary, gestural interpretation of blackletter shapes, adding a slightly calligraphic look and feel to the original hasty lines and energetic construction.
