When they say everything’s already been invented, they’re exaggerating a bit. But not much. When we design new typefaces, whether we like it or not, we have in our memories the historical legacy and invention of our predecessors. That’s also true for more detailed work on optical sizes, intended for the largest or the smallest typesetting. Although for display sizes we give room for fantasy and elegance when shaping fine serifs or smooth drawings full of refined details, for styles designed for footnotes and other small texts we do the exact opposite – pragmatically and rationally, with knowledge of the optical properties of small text. And that’s precisely the case for the Tabac Micro subfamily, a sans-serif typeface derived from Tabac Sans.

Pinch Remix is a recreated version of a typeface I made in 2007. The form hasn’t changed at all, but I composed the family by increasing the number of weights and revising the spacing and kerning. At first it was created from randomly drawing an alphabet offhand on paper with a drawing pen. Then I figured that perhaps it had the framework for a typeface. Originally because it was just a memo, I had already thrown in the trash once. Yet something about it caught me, and when I turned to look down at it, I couldn’t throw it away.

The roots of this font go back to 1967. A book title in trendy letters was created in a completely ingenuous way as a film prop for a Super 8 fun film. I drew the letters with felt-tip pen and poster paint without thinking too much about it. It wasn't until a good 50 years later that I realized, this was a first awkward typeface draft. The flower power vibe was captured here subconsciously. In 2019 I completed the few glyphs and created variants that I would not have thought of at the time.

It's nice when a font provides old style figures, small caps and alternate letters. But what to do if my typesetting program doesn't support Open Type features? The solution may be old-fashioned, but it's effective: the variants are placed in separate font families: Standard, Old Style Figures (OSF), and Small Caps (SC). Any word processor can handle it. As a special feature, my OSF fonts also contain alternative letters such as a looped g or descenders in the italic f.

Type designer Friedrich Poppl is perhaps best known for his classic text faces and elegant scripts, but it seems he had a playful side as well. This frisky face is based on Dynamische Antiqua, which Poppl did for the Stempel foundry in 1960, but which was never released. HGゴシックは、リョービの書体「ゴシック」を字母として作られたフォントです。クラシックなデザインがほどこされた正統派のゴシック体ですが、仮名は大きめに作られていて、読みやすいです。Bウェイトは、MSゴシックと同じデザインになっています。M、Bは、本文用途に向いていますが、見出しにも合います。M、Bよりも太いEは、よく目立つので、大きく使うことで魅力が発揮できるスタイルです。

HG教科書体は、日本活字工業の「日活教科書体」を字母とする教科書体で、児童の教科書などの使用が想定される書体です。筆で書いた文字をもとにしていますが、太さはやや細めです。伸びやかで、格調高いデザインの書体で、フォーマルな場面に合います。手書きの要素が強くコントラストも高めなので、小さいサイズでの長文に使用するよりは、それなりのサイズで、かつ、あまり長めでない文章に使用するほうがいいでしょう。

シーアンドジイの「れいしっく」を字母とする書体です。隷書スタイルに影響を受けたクラシックな丸ゴシックというべき書体です。ふところが大きくとられていて判別しやすいですが、隷書の特徴をとりいれているため、カジュアルさはそれほどなく、格式と落ち着きが感じられます。そのため、フォーマルな場面に向くでしょう。隷書の特徴のある漢字はとても目を引くため、大きいサイズで使うのも、個性が発揮できます。

Linotype Minos is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. This fun font was designed by Swiss artist Christian Goetz, who named it after King Minos of Crete of the Bronze Age. Typical of scripts of this time were the ornamental borders around the characters, found on palaces of Knossos, Phaistos and Mallia. These borders surround every character of Linotype Minos, making it exclusively for headlines in larger point sizes. Single characters can also be used as initials mixed with other alphabets, especially with constructed sans serif and modern serif fonts.

Created for captions and similar serif situations where small type is required, Freight Micro is amazingly illustrative for large type too. This half-wedge, half-slab design provides the firmest of foundations to build your design on. The abruptness of the sharply carved italics take emphasis to a higher form. Freight Micro is an exercise in whispering very loudly.

This font features a complete uppercase alphabet, including accented characters, as well as numbers and standard punctation. Lowercase characters are an assortment of useful dings and things. To create very low-load GIFs, compose your type in Photoshop (or equivalent) at 8 point (or multiples thereof), with anti-aliasing turned off. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin, 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).

The font’s modern grid-like character was also used for the first iPod screens, which is why this font is also associated with music. Today’s font upgrade, Little Micro Sans, is suited for small-point texts, product labels, lists of ingredients, and small captions in books, magazines, websites or applications. This typeface appears to be straight out of a science fiction movie thriller. Mingo is a slightly condensed, somewhat vain gothic with thick vertical strokes proudly tapering downward. Capitals which are normally completely round are now square inside with curving outside corners. Lowercase letters carry the same design traits. And, in the capital A and H, crossbars extend on both sides helping give the face a pronounced retro look. Mingo Gothic is a close cousin to Raleigh Gothic and is an excellent choice for book covers and large display settings. Small caps, fractions, and alternate characters have also been developed for greater layout versatility. Mingo Gothic Bold is now available in the OpenType format. Some new characters have been added to this OpenType version as stylistic alternates, historical forms, small caps, oldstyle figures, ornaments, and f-ligatures. These advanced features work in current versions of Adobe Creative Suite InDesign, Creative Suite Illustrator, and Quark XPress. Check for OpenType advanced feature support in other applications as it gradually becomes available with upgrades.

平成明朝体は、ワープロやDTPの普及にともなうフォント需要の高まりに対して供給が遅れていたため、文字フォント開発・普及センターの指揮のもと、製作された、本文用の明朝体です。デザインは、リョービイマジクスが担当。横組み適性を考慮し、視覚的重心が低めになっています。可読性のため、ふところは広めに、また、低解像度出力機での使用を考慮し、直線を多用したシンプルなデザインになっています。

HG創英プレゼンスのデザインは、創英企画。横画が太い明朝体系の書体です。データ量を少なくするため、微妙な傾きや太さの変化を避け、始筆部や終筆部の飾りや、はらいの先端部、ゲタやはね、うろこなどの形状は、できる限り、直線化したり、単純化するなどの処理を行っています。そのため、シンプルですっきりとしたデザインの書体になっています。大きなサイズで使用したほうがよいでしょう。
