My latest book production group is quite conservative. I discovered my need for a pair of headline fonts with the same vertical metrics which are looser and more lively. Since the serif family is Biblia Serif, and the Sans family is Draetha [which is Welch for preach], Araldo [which is Italian for herald] makes sense to me. Narrow has my normal set of Opentype features with small caps, small cap figures, and the rest of the figure sets. Bold is too heavy for small caps, without messing with the metrics. So, it has the normal figure sets, plus a decent set of discretionary ligatures. They both work well, and are meeting my need for a headline family to add to the book production group.

Manhattan was designed in 1970 for ITC by Tom Carnase, who also created Avant Garde Gothic. The distinguishing characteristic of this designer's work is found in the emphasis on the thick-thin constrast. In this case, Carnase approached the border of the impossible. The heavy vertical strokes stand opposite the finest of lines and the thick columns dominate the overall look. The basic forms are strictly constructed, as are those of Morris F. Benton's Broadway of 1925, to which many parallels can be found. Manhattan is best used for applications which will not be placed too far from the viewer, as at too great a distance the fine lines can no longer be seen. It should be used exclusively for headlines in medium point sizes.

Adelbrook is a dynamic serif typeface that keeps calm. This is particularly evident in a subtle vertical hairline variation, light or unapplied head serifs, and clipped upper dots. A very glitzy Blitz! I always wanted to design a typeface that was top heavy, but I never knew how not to make it look like Antique Olive, until recently -- I had an idea. My new family is very readable despite it beeing top heavy, thin on the low end and thick on the upper end. The font gets a special shine because of this effect. First cut by Lanston Monotype, the Goudy Modern font family was based on designs used by French engravers during the eighteenth century. Although called a modern it possesses a number of old style characteristics. Capitals are much shorter than the ascenders, serifs are fully bracketed and round shapes have a slight stress. The overall weight of Monotype Goudy Modern is on the heavy side, giving good emphasis in display sizes but it is not too heavy for use in text.

Olive is a hand-drawn condensed font.

NarrowWay is a family of 18 condensed and ultra-condensed sans-serif typefaces. The family started with the ultra-condensed widths, then the condensed and regular widths (the regular is still quite condensed) were added. All widths have three weights and each weight has an italics style. These 18 styles lack a true lowercase but rather have a set of alternative characters, some based on lower-case forms, on the lower-case keys. The character spacing in most of the styles is quite loose and it can be tightened with an application's character spacing if needed. Cocomat has been designed by Francesco Canovaro and Debora Manetti as a development of the Coco Gothic typeface system created by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini. It shares with all the other subfamilies in the Coco Gothic system a geometric skeleton with open, more humanistic proportions, a sans serif design with slightly rounded corners and low contrast proportions, without optical compensation on the horizontal lines, resulting in a quasi-inverted contrast look in the boldest weights. What differentiates Cocomat from the other subfamilies in Coco Gothic are some slight design touches in the uppercase letters, with a vertical unbalancing reminiscent of art deco design, notably evident in uppercase "E", "A","F","P" and "R" - while lowercase letters have been given some optical compensation on the stems, like in "n","m", "p" and "q". These design choices, evoking the second and third decade of the last century (Cocomat is also referred as Coco 1920 in the Coco Gothic Family) all give Cocomat a slight vintage feeling, making it a perfect choice every time you need to add a period vibe or an historical flair to your design, like in food or luxury branding. Nova Caere is a typical urban calligraphy, gestural with its fast lines, with short and slightly noticeable ascender and descender traits. Condensed lower case and rounded capital letters are quite similar in height.
