Don’t let the name “Trippy Hippie JNL” fool you. Although the type design fits well with the 1960s-70s hippie movement and the “love generation”, the design is actually straight out of a page from a vintage German lettering textbook entitled “50 Alphabete fur Technikur und Fachschulen” (loosely translated to “50 Alphabets for Technicians and Specialized Schools”). Dezen is a contemporary, mechanical grotesque typeface. Its letters were first constructed from individual modules and then optically refined to enhance its rhythm. Its tight letter spacing and narrow proportions make the typeface particularly well suited for display sizes and headlines. Montix is a narrow, constructed type family that developed by the German designer Diana Fischer in 2003. With five weights (light, light italic, regular, regular italic, and bold), Montix is a particularly effective small family, especially when used for headline or display purposes. Montix's letterforms have relatively long ascenders and descenders, which compared with its horizontally compact body gives it its unique style. Words or lines of text set in Montix would look best when some amount of white space is left around them. Because of this, the faces are well suited for logos and corporate identity uses.

With the famous and much used Eurostile and Bank Gothic in my mind I wanted to design a mono-line font as simple and legible as possible. A square with rounded corners, i.e., the letter ‘o’ as its basis. From there on back to basics, so straights remained simple straights with 90° endings, whatever the angle. Numbers are monospaced. The result seems to be a pleasantly balanced and neutral font. Excellent for display purposes and surprisingly legible in even small sizes. This perhaps typical approach by an architect led to the name of the font: ArchiType.

Linotype Killer is part of the Take Type Library, selected from the contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests from 1994 and 1997. Designed by German artist Andre Nossek, the font seems to describe the Technosound of the 1990s with its electronically produced sights and sounds. It represents repetition, mass production and conformity. The alphabet consists exclusively of capital letters, all based on a rectangular form, all of the same height, and, with the exception of the I’, all of the same width. The cool and distant Linotype Killer is best suited to short headlines.

Linotype Russisch Brot is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. The inspiration of German designer Markus Remscheid is not hard to see for those who are familiar with the chocolate cookies in the form of letters which are called Russisches Brot. The font is available in six weights. The basic weight is perfectly legible and is good for both headlines and shorter texts and from there the weights become more and more nibbled away, leaving the basic form of the characters and a few crumbs.

Prospera was designed without reference to existing roman faces. In its initial form, development was partially supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (Design Project Grant), as a design for use on 'low-res' digital output devices. Early releases had simplified detail in cross-bars and serifs, and hand-tuned bitmaps. As an original design, Prospera draws on principles of letterform developed during my studies of lettercarving (in Wales with Ieuan Rees) and Roman proportion. The design is idiosyncratic, perhaps more akin to Gill's Perpetua than to the monotonous corporate flavors so prevalent today.

German designer Dieter Kurz gave his display font a calligraphic character. The forms lean slightly to the right and have a spontaneous and individual look. This light, cheerful font also displays a harmony among the forms and gives text a personal touch. Linotype Sketch combines well with modern text fonts which have the same narrow proportions. This font is well-suited for headlines and short and middle length texts with point size 12 or larger.

A contemporary sans serif design, Arial contains more humanist characteristics than many of its predecessors and as such is more in tune with the mood of the last decades of the twentieth century. The overall treatment of curves is softer and fuller than in most industrial-style sans serif faces. Terminal strokes are cut on the diagonal which helps to give the face a less mechanical appearance. Designer Nick Curtis found the inspiration for this typeface on a 1920s poster for a German bookseller, by Berlin poster artist Paul Scheurich. ITC Jeepers retains the spontaneity and playfulness of Scheurich's original lettering and adds a few surprises of its own, one being the somewhat exclamatory ear on the lowercase "g". It was, in fact, the excited look of this particular character that gave rise to the font's name. Not to be outdone, the exclamation point takes on an even more startling demeanor. The birth of the monospaced types dates back to the past. There was a need for the creation of typesets for typewriters. The difficulty was to align the different glyphs in the same width. This led to particular problems with letters like "M" and "l"; the former seemed to be squeezed into the same width of all letters and the second one appeared way too stretched. Despite - or perhaps because of - the impression of the typewriter it is still popular with Graphic Designers. Pinch Remix is a recreated version of a typeface I made in 2007. The form hasn’t changed at all, but I composed the family by increasing the number of weights and revising the spacing and kerning. At first it was created from randomly drawing an alphabet offhand on paper with a drawing pen. Then I figured that perhaps it had the framework for a typeface. Originally because it was just a memo, I had already thrown in the trash once. Yet something about it caught me, and when I turned to look down at it, I couldn’t throw it away.

Palatino Arabic is a collaboration between Lebanese designer Nadine Chahine and Prof. Hermann Zapf. The design is based on the Al-Ahram typeface designed by Zapf in 1956 but reworked and modified to fit the Palatino nova family. The design is Naskh in style but with a strong influence of the Thuluth style as well. This is evident in the swash-like finials and the wide proportions of the letterforms. It is designed for use in print in both large and small sizes. The counters are wide open to allow for better readability in small sizes as well as to maintain an open and friendly appearance. The font has 1091 glyphs and includes a large number of extra ligatures and stylistic alternates as well as the basic Latin part of Palatino nova and support for Arabic, Persian, and Urdu. It also includes proportional and tabular numerals for the supported languages. Palatino Arabic wins Type Directors Club award. Each year, the New York-based Type Directors Club judges typeface designs from all over the world in their TDC2 contest. Linotype is pleased to announce that a very new typeface of its own is among 2008’s winners: Palatino Arabic. A collaboration between Nadine Chahine and Prof. Hermann Zapf, this face is an extension of Zapf’s Al-Ahram Arabic type from 1956 recreated to join the Palatino nova family.
