Fun Signs JNL comprises twenty-six humorous signs from a 1930s-era sales list of products manufactured by the Koehler Sign Company of St. Louis, Missouri. Koehler manufactured a large line of stock cardboard "Blue Signs" (presumably blue backgrounds with white lettering) and alongside the many standard phrases used by various businesses was a list of funny sayings. Such placards were bought by merchants to either evoke interest in their services (such as in a bar or restaurant, or jokingly comment on their business policies (as in credit billing). These novelty signs are a fun addition to a flier, ad, web page or announcement and will leave your readers smiling.

P22 Kirkwall is an unusual and elegant design. The upper case letters have a slightly curved stem that ends in a small serif and wedge crossbars. I digitized and revitalize Hostetler Fette Ultfraktur Ornamental from the classical type specimen book from Rudolf Hostetler. He was a Swiss type designer, author of “The Printer’s Terms” designed by Jan Tschichold, of “Technical Terms of the Printing Industry” (5th edition was printed in 1995), and of "Type: eine Auswahl guter Drucktypen; 80 Alphabete klassischer und moderner Schriften" (Teufen, Ausser-Rhoden: Niggli, 1958). He also wrote "Type: A Selection of Types" (1949, fgm books, R. Hostettler, E. Kopley, H. Strehler Publ., St. Gallen and London) in which he highlights type made by European houses such as Haas, Enschedé, Deberny and Nebiolo. Jost Hochuli wrote his biography.

Alf Becker was a master sign painter and lettering stylist who created well over 100 alphabets for a monthly feature in the trade magazine "Sign of the Times" during the 1930s and 1940s. Thanks to Tod Swormstedt of ST pubications for supplying the source material. One of these designs features a modernized version of Old English or "text" lettering making it more legible for sign and show card work. Doing away with extra curves and swashes, this type style is more calligraphic in nature than classic. Mustang is a powerfully expressive brush font that combines an edgy urban aesthetic with a smooth feminine flow. Some have suggested that Mustang is romantic. Some say it has something to do with speed or freedom. While precisely what Mustang expresses is up to debate, there’s no doubt that it’s expressing it with intensity. The style was born in my high school years, when I would wreck my notebooks with multiple layers of graffiti tags which would start in the margins and then creep in to cover the entire page. I developed a sensibility towards a very fast, expressive use of my hand, which later easily and naturally translated into brush. I used this style typographically on several projects throughout the years, and even turned it into a signature illustration style. Mustang is the second font, after Streetbrush, to use this brushwork as its inspiration. Mustang will be especially evocative at large sizes, where the details and sharpness of the shapes really come to life. It also holds together well for use as body copy, but may lose some of its aesthetic integrity at really small sizes.

Bombora evolved over years of designs in the world of surfing. The native name is given to massive surf building up over a reef, often dangerous, always spectacular. The font was expertly digitized by Brian Kent in New York. Arabesque is a romantic, ornamental font, in which intertwining, flowing lines and generous loops enhance the beauty of the basic shapes. Arabesque successfully combines legibility with a decorative, sumptuous style. In its European interpretation it was also called "Moresque". The font "Ability" was the origin of Arabesque, however, numerous, subtle changes set it apart. Arabesque, is characterised by a small x-height and relatively large ascenders and descenders (loops). The loops are created out of two or three delicate, intertwined lines that contrast with the much less expansive bowls and shapes of the lowercase letters. Guanabara is the third release of Plau Type Foundry. It started from the need of a wayfinding typeface that had personality enough to be the brand typeface for a city. The city of Rio de Janeiro, with its never-ending curves and all year long summer weather provided the constraints and requirements of this typeface. From there, it evolved to be a workhorse, with 8 weights from Thin to Black and matching true italics. It just had to have the features that all us designers have grown to love, such as alternate letters (a, g and r for the romans), tabular and proportional figures in lining and oldstyle set-ups as well as small caps, fractions and all that jazz (I mean, samba). And it needed to be recognizable and distinct. For that, design features like tapered R legs, capitals with classic proportions and calligraphic finishes on the terminals proved crucial. And last, but not least, like Rio, it had to welcome many cultures. We came to think of it as the “Typeface from Ipanema”, with a classic, timeless look, swinging elegance and joyful attitude.

PF Bague Slab Pro draws its inspiration from early 20th century slabs and was designed as a companion to Bague Sans, a versatile monoline typeface with a distinct and eye-catching personality. Following its predecessor’s design guidelines, it overcomes the monotonous and mechanical rigidity of early geometrics by introducing subtle variations in stroke width and semi-wedge serifs rather than square slabs. These striking serifs, along with a mixture of attractive letterforms, exude a strong, modern and energetic personality at display sizes. Enzian is the fruit of a yearlong German Chancellor Fellowship sponsored by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Our hope was simple: to make something useful and beautiful out of something that most people consider to be neither. We were fascinated by the complex persona of Blackletter in Germany and drawn to its emotive ornament and its sensual, non-geometry. Two areas in particular, the long-standing rivalry and widely-believed inferiority that Blackletter had with Roman type and Blackletter’s relevance in contemporary culture, became the foundation of the project. The result is Enzian: an invigorated, original Blackletter of uncommon depth and hopefully, a bit of charm. It is warm and expressive, feminine and contemporary, while staying true to its hand-written, calligraphic roots. Enzian is a multi-language, workhorse typeface that can create hierarchy (with unconventional italic and small caps), and has numerals that fit the family. It is a display face that isn't afraid of handling longer text; one that is equally comfortable in headlines and in poetry. We are delighted to announce that Enzian has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence in Type Design by the Type Director’s Club.

Crafted in the best tradition of the geometric sans-serif, Rondana is a typographic tribute to the the retro-futuristic aesthetics of the 1960s and 70s, as well as an exercise in purity of line. However, its spirit is decidedly non-bauhausian, since its strokes intentionally deviate from the dull, obvious, ruler-and-compass construction; its arcs and curves being much more complex, tending towards a slightly square shape, imbued with subtle modulations. This sums up to a more organic, flowing, extroverted personality than the one just expected from the use of plain, simple geometry. Another feature is the conscious use of non-standard shapes for many signs, that are quite legible but somewhat unexpected, such as the E, the g and the ampersand; making Rondana an excellent display face and also giving a particular flavor to the text composed in it, especially in its italic variants —which are, by the way, designer italics in their own right and not just an oblique version of the roman. Rondana comes in twelve variants comprising a wide spectrum of weights, allowing for an extremely diverse range of expression.
