Dynatron is a bold condensed retro-style font inspired by the old sci-fi comic covers, an example of which I have mocked up here.

“My Dearest Friend” is how she began nearly all her letters to her husband, John. I refer, of course, to Abigail Smith Adams, first Second Lady and second First Lady of the United States. Her famous correspondence with John Adams produced nearly 1,200 letters over a span of some 40 years, leaving us with a priceless record of early American life — from household routines to war and politics to expressions of personal worry and devotion. Although Abigail’s was not the loveliest hand, I found it sure and expressive, as befitting her extraordinary sway and intelligence; it also carries a genuine flavor of the period. In making the font I focused chiefly on her handwriting from the 1780s and ’90s, when she’d taken to using a disconnected cursive, which struck me as distinctive and alluring. The OpenType release of Abigail Adams has scores of ligatures, standard and contextual alternates, lining and old-style figures, cross-outs, ink blots, and full Latin language support.

Morganismi is the first font I made for myself. I originally used it for making notes at the outsider art exhibition Morganismi here in Sysmä, Finland.

Fishbones is a font set consisting of fish-bone font-bats. Nothing fishy here – an extensive set of characters makes this an unusual and versatile font.

A neo-grotesk with a bit more bite, this is Schizotype Grotesk. It's not your usual grot; this is purely display typography. Notches cut deep into the letterforms and the thick/thin contrast isn't always where you might expect. It's intended to be a challenging typeface - not beautiful or particularly 'useful' in any conventional sense, but it is at the very least interesting. In a world where everyone and their dog has their own grotesk offering, perhaps being interesting and that little bit different is in itself enough to give the face its utility. Besides, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What really matters is what you think! Schizotype Grotesk isn't bogged down with a million and one OpenType features you'll never use, but it does include proportional and tabular lining figures; automatic fractions; numerators and denominators; superscript and subscript numerals; case sensitive forms; and five stylistic sets that change [a], [g], [y], [IJ], and [@] respectively.

The vintage sheet music for "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" yielded another bit of Art Deco-era lettering perfect for developing into a digital font. This time it wasn't the song title, but rather the name of the show it was from serving as the type inspiration - the Cotton Club's 1931 revue "Rhythm-Mania". Harlem's Cotton Club was an "exclusive, whites only" club; both famous for its talent and shows, yet infamous for hiring black acts but not allowing black patronage. On the sheet music, the show title was hand lettered in a bold, slightly stylized fashion which became the basis for Rhythmic Revue JNL; available in both regular and oblique versions.

The 1930s era French textbook on lettering "100 Alphabets Publicitaires déssinés par M. Moullet" featured a hand lettered chamfered alphabet with slab serifs reminiscent of sports lettering. Although intended for advertising and signage inspiration, only a partial lower case was illustrated along with the capitals and no numbers or other characters existed. These had to be created from scratch. The finished result is not only a bit of classic lettering from the past, but the font also doubles as a typeface with a sports look and feel. A traditional (rather than stylized) M and N are located on the solid bar key and the broken bar key respectively. Old Sport JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Electric Eden is a strikingly retro font that oozes nostalgia and vintage vibes. This font is reminiscent of the 1970s and 1980s, with its bold and vibrant curves that exude an electric energy. Martin Wilke’s underrated yet influential deco classic from 1932 has both feet firmly planted in the high traditions of Western European calligraphy while carefully and subtly introducing some traits from the sweeping geometric/minimalist vision of the time. In a way, it was one of the representatives of the European anti-type typefaces of that era, when print media was searching for the elusive aesthetic balance between humanism and geometry. This typeface enjoyed some popularity in Germany for a few years, and went on to influence further type designs in Holland and Italy. After the second World War, the black hole that swallowed a big chunk of Europe’s print culture, new influences and technologies overtook the scene, and selective historical emphasis ensued, highlighting some of the era’s designs and overlooking others. Further selective picking in the digital era all but buried Wilke’s body of work - unfairly so, because he was just as important in German type history as Bernhard, Post, Schneidler, Tiemann and Trump. The original metal Wilke Kursiv came in one weight. This digital version goes a long way in expanding on that original offering. Now Wilke’s masterpiece comes in three weights, and with a full Pro treatment including swash caps, small capitals, five types of figures, automatic fractions, and plenty of other OpenType niceties. Each of the Wilke Kursiv Pro fonts comes with over 700 characters, and contains support for most Latin-based languages. Also available are three non-Pro fonts in each weight.

Momotarō is a Japanese legend about a boy who came to earth inside a giant peach. He was found by a childless woman and grew up to be a hero. I'm in a Japanese mood - mainly because lately I have been working with brushes and ink a lot. Momotaro font is a very detailed brush font. It doesn't come with a hero inside a giant peach, but it does give your design work that extra oomph, ahh and wow.

Named for a Manhattan neighborhood, Morningside Heights JNL is based on lettering found on a 1920s-era piece of sheet music. Part of the charm of hand lettering from the Art Nouveau era is found in the non-standard line thicknesses, experimental character shapes and varying character widths.

Massimo is a semi-serif geometric type family. For as long as I can remember, I've admired the visual style of New York – its architecture, fashion, design, and typography. After spending two weeks in Manhattan this summer, I wanted to prepare a sharp and modern typeface in Big Apple style.

This font has been described as "one of the cutest fonts I've ever seen. I can imagine a beautiful, young 22-year-old fashion design student from Los Angeles, CA with this handwriting as she's writing in her journal." I have cleaned it up a bit, increased the size of all the dots slightly and then designed all the diacritics and expanded the character set. The lowercase "f" has a big overhang and the lowercase "j" goes really far to the left - I have programmed automatic (OpenType) Contextual Alternate versions that automatically substitute with shorter variants when letters collide. These alternate letters can also be switched on using the OpenType palette's Stylistic Alternates or Stylistic set 01 ("j") and 02 ("f"). In searching for a Roman to use, I found there were bits of Bembo, Times, Garamond, etc., that I liked and bits that I did not. So I set out to take the best bits of all my favorite Romans and tried to create the ultimate Roman Typeface.

MuskitoCaps is a Tuscan (split-serif) font that is rather narrow and a bit awkward. It is caps only, though the lower case differs from the upper case(the lower case lacks the mid-stem spike). The family has three styles, plain, shadowed, and shadowinside. The last has the same shapes as the plain style but has the spacing of the shadowed style so it can be layered with the shadowed style to easily produce bi-colored lettering.

I really like creating script fonts. Why, I hear you say? Well, creating script fonts lets me be me. I am not trying to create classy, connected fonts for you to write love letters with: there are already too many of those available and quite frankly, I just don't like them. I prefer the messy script fonts - uneven, no real baseline and with a bit of splatter or rough edges for good measure. Daft script is one of these messy script fonts: it was handmade and it comes with two alternates for the lower case glyphs that cycle as you type. This is an all-caps font, so that means you have 4 options per letter! I also love languages (I speak 6), so Daft Script comes with fantastic language support, including Vietnamese and Sami.

Pounder Fonts were designed by Tom Nikosey / CozyFonts Foundry. This font, as all my fonts started with pencil sketches based on the letter O. Once I arrived at the comfortable shape I worked out the C, G, & Q. The H, M, T matched the visual weight and so I moved on to E & S. As the E & S are 2 of the most repeated characters in fonts' I wanted a little bit extra here. The font is obviously heavy weighted yet very legible and almost architectural in presence. There are flashes of Art Deco yet futuristic style. After sketching the feel of this font I was excited by the possibility of the numerals styling. I can see these used for many applications. Why the title Pounder? Why not it seems to fit.

Helena derived her curves from the old Chinese Tangram puzzle. She sure is playful, though sometimes she bites furiously. No worries! Helena may seem to be a tad crazy, but all in good moderation. Don’t go overboard, use her well and I can assure you … she’ll be worth all your effort.
