The design process of this font was rudely interrupted on August 11th, 2015, when my first child, Hazel, was born. Thinking up names for fonts can be tricky, as can thinking up names for babies, so when the font was finally finished, it seemed like a good idea to kill two birds with one stone, and here it is: Hazel Script. Hazel Script is a finely crafted, elegant, connecting script. I wanted to make something unique, and to this end, the contrast in the face is not based on any ductal logic, or the writing of some imagined tool. The thick parts of glyphs are purely aesthetic devices, placed to give the otherwise monoline font an interesting rhythm. The over-sized upper case letters follow a mid-century lettering skeleton, and swash forms can be used judiciously to add spice to the text. Hazel Script works "out of the box" but to really get the best out of it, use OpenType-savvy programs to unlock a world of swashes, alternates, ligatures and the like. In detail, the features are as follows: Swash - alternate forms for many glyphs Stylistic Sets - 1: script r, 2: alternate s, 3: script z, 4 and 5: more swash options, 4,5,6 and 7: access to alternate ampersands (the font boasts six to choose from!), 8: connecting forms for K, L, R, X and Z. Ballard Ave is inspired by old vintage signage found in Ballard, Washington, an old neighborhood of Seattle. Ballard Avenue is a protected historical district filled with turn of the century brick buildings that have been converted into quaint shops and independent businesses. This alphabet is based on the antique signage that still exists on the sides of many of these buildings.

I've always admired the work of Rudolph Koch. Culpepper is what I think Neuland would have looked like if it had been developed with lowercase, small caps and a range of weights. I started work on this series in the late 80’s and, like so many of my ideas, it was shelved when life drew me in another direction. Culpepper is the name of one of the islands in the Galapagos chain.

As good as Nylon is, there’s nothing better than a nice woolly blanket. The smell and coarse, uneven texture are relaxing and feel reassuring. More comfortable. In a world where technology can reach millimetric precision, sometimes it’s good to connect with the imperfect and controlled impurity that is nature. Font design in particular has matured through software that can generate the most perfect letters in the world. But most of them don’t have soul. Landa is a glimpse from the cutting edge into the past. Inspired by Venetian lettering from the 15th century, whilst giving them new meaning, its letters become expressionist and have a modern touch. A rendez-vous between Nicolas Jenson, Oldřich Menhart, and nature itself. In Landa you can feel the texture of trunks and branches, from full fertile splendour to dried-out frailty. It takes the reader for a stroll through the woods on a late autumn evening, or on an adventure through the Amazonian rainforest, depending on the weight chosen. In the lighter and italic options, Landa text is organic and rustic, and very comfortable to read. What’s more, while it’s discreet on smaller screens, when enlarged it reveals brittle and expressive calligraphic shapes. This also makes it ideal for packaging or display elements. Landa provides advanced typographical support in several languages and OpenType features including case-sensitive forms, small caps, contextual alternatives, stylistic alternates, fractions, proportional and tabular figures. In this case it is technology that serves lettering, not the latter being technology dependent. Let’s not forget, as Erik Spiekermann said “we are still analogical beings. Our brains and eyes are analogical.” Perhaps that’s why to disconnect we always need to go back to forests, rivers, nature. Perhaps that’s why we still prefer wood to steel or wool to nylon.

This is a geometric uncial font with a retro/art-deco feel. It comes in four weights, each in upright and oblique styles. It has Unicode coverage for Latin, Greek (modern diacritics only), and Cyrillic, plus the Euro and peace signs. This font began as part of a project to design a local currency. Sadly, the municipality canceled the endeavor before the design competition had started. I'm including one of the prototypes in the gallery section as an example of this font’s many uses.

The original Avenir typeface was designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1988, after years of having an interest in sans serif typefaces. The word Avenir means “future” in French and hints that the typeface owes some of its interpretation to Futura. But unlike Futura , Avenir is not purely geometric; it has vertical strokes that are thicker than the horizontals, an “o” that is not a perfect circle, and shortened ascenders. These nuances aid in legibility and give Avenir a harmonious and sensible appearance for both texts and headlines. In 2012, Akira Kobayashi worked alongside Avenir’s esteemed creator Adrian Frutiger to bring Avenir Next to life, as a new take on the classic Avenir. The goal of the project was to take a beautifully designed sans and update it so that its technical standards surpass the status quo, leaving us with a truly superior sans family. Since then, Monotype expanded the typeface to accommodate more languages. Akira’s deep familiarity with existing iterations of the Frutiger designs, along with his understanding of the design philosophy of the man himself, made him uniquely suited to lead the creation of different language fonts. The Combi collection includes Sans, Sans Oblique, a true Italic, Serif, Serif Oblique and a set of Openface capitals. Combi fonts have 5 compatible weights and metrics allowing them to be used in free combination. Inspiration came from Jan Van Krimpen’s 'Romulus' (Enschedé, 1931). While browsing through a Dan Solo type reference book, Jeff Levine fell in love with the multiline stylings of one particular typeface, then sat down and re-drew from scratch his own interpretation of the design. Jeff's version is called Art Lover JNL - offering kudos to art in general, the Art Deco movement and (of course) type design.

Censorship JNL joins the wide array of stencil-themed fonts from Jeff Levine. An advantage to this particular design is the larger amount of stencil sections per letter or number. When used with a plotter/cutter, stencils in excess of 12 inches high can be cut into masking material without the cut-out characters becoming floppy or unstable.

Geometric sans serif is one of my favorite fonts because it's so, simple, clean and modern, and a long time I've been dreaming of making this type, inspired by many media and especially "Futura, 1927" ( by Early Bauer) I created "Magnify" Geometric sans. The structure and element shape of Magnify is not really perfectly circle, but slightly oval it can be seen in the uppercase letters O, G, C, Q and in the lowercase letters o, a, c, e. Magnify has 8 weights, - from Hairline to Bold and Matching Oblique. One of my guilty pleasures is in taking the time to recreate historical typefaces as digital fonts, and expand on their character sets to enable them to be used more widely than their limited originals. A lot of incredible historical typestyles created as wood or metal type with bare bones character sets have been lost or only exist as limited specimen proofs in old books. These typefaces may have more niché uses than modern typefaces, but I believe it is important nonetheless to preserve these typefaces for future generations. These typefaces, if nothing else, can often inspire new creations.

Chennai’s market-tested type styles have taken new form once again. The Dee font family started from letter "d" and "e" followed by the rest of the letters. "Dee" is Thai word mean "Good" in English that is the source of this font name. The Dee XTS style has alternate stroke ends relative to the Dee XT style. It is included as a bonus style in the Dee Regular Set and Dee Complete packages.

A very popular grungy font, now made even more useful! The most notable characteristic of this typeface is that it has a compact and regular shape that is slightly condensed but fluidly connected. Its glyphs emulate the look of handwritten, inked characters. Their exuberant graphic strokes and sharp edges maintain the influences of printed types produced by mechanical processes. Unlike most of the italic type of today, the capital letters are as high as the ascending lower-case letters. The brush script style (Originally designed in 1942 by Robert E. In 1957, Helmut Matheis designed Charme for the Ludwig and Mayer type foundry, located in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. This informal script is of medium weight and has some variation of color. The caps are flowing and the lower case letters are close fitting. Their is a bold companion, called Slogan.

ITC Hedera's roots can be traced to a suite of initials intended for book design. Olivera Stojadinovic, the face's designer, made the first sketches for the initials with a handmade tool consisting of two flexible metal strips tied to a wooden handle. This makeshift pen created the distinctive uneven double strokes of the letterforms. Stojadinovic says that she tried to keep the original flavor of the sketches in the finished font. Stroke roughness has been preserved in final execution, though the characters had some cleaning and polishing," she notes. Based on Renaissance letterforms, ITC Hedera has a classical quality that complements its calligraphic exuberance. The name Hedera? According to Stojadinovic, "It's the name of a common ivy. I chose it because of the organic image of the character strokes, which, to me, resemble shapes from nature's leaves or stems of plants."
