Aeronic is a work of love. I stumbled upon a fantastic Japanese poster for Nikke Coat by Gihachiro Okuyama (1907 - 1981). Gihachiro Okuyama (also: Okayama) was a very prolific Japanese print artist who started his career making woodblock prints, but later moved on to posters and advertisements. I tried to recreate the hand lettering in the original 1937 Nikke Coat poster, but since I had to work with a few glyphs only, I designed the remaining ones myself. The outline of Aeronic is rather thin, with thicker bits in some glyphs. It is quite rough in places, but it all adds to its unique look. Aeronic comes with a bonanza of diacritics.

This all started with a love for Minister. This is a font designed by Carl Albert Fahrenwaldt in 1929. In the specimen booklet there’s a scan from Linotype’s page many years ago. They no longer carry the font. I’ve gone quite a ways from the original. It was dark and a bit heavy. But I loved the look and the readability. This came to a head when I started my first book on all-digital printing written from 1994-1995, and published early in 1996. I needed fonts to show the typography I was talking about. At that point oldstyle figures, true small caps, and discretionary ligatures were rare. More than that text fonts for book design had lining OR oldstyle figures, lowercase OR small caps—never both. So, I designed the Diaconia family using the Greek word for minister. It was fairly rough. I knew very little. I later redesigned and updated Diaconia into Bergsland Pro—released in 2004. It was still rough (though I impressed myself). Now, with 4-font Biblia Serif family 13 years later, I’ve cleaned up, made the fonts more consistent internally, added more functional OpenType features, and brought the fonts into the 21st century. I used the 2017 set of features: small caps, small cap figures, oldstyle figures, fractions, lining figures, ligatures and discretionary ligatures. These are fonts designed for book production and work well for text or heads. Finally, in 2021, I went over the fonts entirely and remade them in Glyphs.

Bodoni Classic Deco is against all rules. Giambattista Bodoni himself would probably hate me for doing it; he was a real purist. The whole idea of the Bodoni typeface is no embellishments and here I go and decorate those nice clear letters. Shame on me! But I find this is a very nice and useful typeface for all kinds of cards and certificates. The Lina typeface family was designed by Roy Cole and completed in 2003. The roman font, Lina 30, was drawn originally by hand and later its character set extended and digitally redrawn with the aid of Fontographer. The five additional fonts, 60, 90, and the italics 33, 66, 99 followed and were all produced digitally from scratch. Lina is characterized by economy, lightness and evenness of weight. This is the kind of letters I drew in school back in the 1980ies. I would never have guessed that I would do the same thing like 40 years later! I remember making a simple space game for my VIC-20 computer, and I needed some "data letters" (as I called it) - as far as I can remember, this is close to what I made 40-like years ago. Also, I was inspired by the well known series "Stranger Things" - you know, all that 80ies theme stuff took me down memory lane! :) Anyway, all the letters are handdrawn, using a squared paper as guide - at it may look simple, but it took me quite some time to finish this font (hence the name!)

Of all student work produced in Joost Schmidt?s Bauhaus classes, Reinhold Rossig?s (1903?1979) alphabet designs are perhaps closest to his master?s teachings: monolinear, geometric lettering, constructed on grids using compass and ruler. Drafts by Rossig, dated 1929, also demonstrate explorations of letterform width and x-height. Almost ninety years later, Elia Preuss carefully preserves Rossig?s letters and considerations in a proper typeface, by overcoming most of the optical mistakes captured in true geometric letterforms. To carry Rossig?s design further away from Schmidt?s influence, Preuss also lent more characteristic letters found on poster designs by fellow Bauhaus student Hermann Werner Kubsch. A 1929 German travel poster espoused the benefits of using a sleeping car with the caption “Wer Schlafwagen reist spart Zeit und Geld” (which translates to “Whoever travels in a sleeping car saves time and money”). Pictured on the poster is a passing train with the name "Mitropa" lettered on the side of a railway car in a bold, stylized font with thin slab serifs. "Mitropa" was an acronym of “Mitteleuropa” (German for Central Europe), and was used by a catering company than ran the sleeping and dining cars of numerous German railways for a good portion of the 20th Century.
