Agent was inspired by the classic fun lettering of 1930s Dutch alphabetician Martin Meijer. Overbold is an unapologetic display typeface inspired by an illustration in Eric Gill's Essay on Typography (p.51), in which he demonstrates �how not to make letters�. In particular, he shows that increasing the weight of the downstroke in a serif �A� without structural adjustments yields an absurd, �overbold� result. I found the letter so charming that I decided to blatantly disregard Gill's wisdom and draw an entire overbold typeface. Here is the result. I'm not sorry.

On April 20, 1950, film comedian Jerry Lewis indulged his love of cameras by opening up Jerry Lewis’ Camera Exchange on Vine Street in Hollywood. It closed in 1951. Thanks to an image preserved within newsreel footage of the shop’s grand opening night, a glimpse of the post-Art Deco signage with its unusual, block style lettering inspired a digital version. Highly unusual and best for novelty projects, Shutterbug JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Imagine the year 2099 and a merger between two multinational conglomerates dabbling in space colonization and research - maybe Nostromo would be their typeface of choice for branding. A photo of the now closed [circa-1953] Lowell Municipal Pool (at 1601 N. 28th St.) in Boise, Idaho shows the words “Municipal Pool” formed into the cement of the entrance to the above-ground swimming facility. Both the lettering and building entrance designs harken back to the Art Deco era and the sign features stencil-like characters. This inspired a typeface aptly named Municipal Pool JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Cary Grant was one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors, playing romantic leads, dramatic parts and showing off his impeccable timing in screwball comedies. A perfect example of this is Frank Capra’s “Arsenic and Old Lace” from 1942. Introducing Terrapin! I named this after listening to a song called "Terrapin on a Tightrope." Considering the fact that a terrapin is a kind of turtle, it makes that song title seem pretty harrowing! This font has heavy roots in one of my favorite lettering styles. It's rough, scrappy, and likes to do its own thing. It has a full uppercase and lowercase set, numbers, punctuation, and lots of extended Latin characters for language support. It also includes alternate versions of 17 lowercase letters. Where Terrapin really shines is in the ligatures. I've written separate two- and three-letter combined forms for some of the most common letter combinations, and a few uncommon ones to boot. There are almost 100 ligatures in here, all PUA-encoded so everyone can access them (and also coded so if your software does automatic ligature replacement, they'll pop right in).

Monolog is an especially monolinear rounded display typeface, designed to work great alongside monoline illustrations, logos and icons, while still performing well in some text settings. A number of contemporary quirks in its construction establish visual interest, while Monolog’s clean, geometric forms allow it to remain extremely versatile, great for a wide range of applications and themes. Some good uses would include branding and identity work, signage, packaging, web and app design; anywhere from a hip coffee shop to a contemporary arts gallery, a music festival or a craft microbrewery. Stand-out features include double-stacked capital ligatures, abbreviation and catchwords ligatures, interesting capital forms, and alternates – including a stylistic set to swap the default circular forms for ovals to give Monolog a more condensed and pragmatic style. Phillip Kelly first drew the Croissant typeface in 1978 for Letraset. Back in the 1970s and 80s, Letraset's rubdown lettersheets were a popular means of designing with type. Today, many of these nostalgic classics are available in digital format. Linotype is pleased to re-present Croissant. This experimental typeface is built up out of round, brush-like strokes, creating heavy, and black letters. These forms are best used for display signage and headline text. Raniscript started out as an idea for a bold and strongly structured ronde style script with some contemporary touches. As I tinkered with various forms it took on a life of its own. Having an old world feel, it makes me visualize faded shop signs from India written in English. The name comes from a series of colorful vintage matchbook designs advertising the Flying Rani. You'll find Raniscript ideal for packaging, book titles, brochures or anything requiring a robust display treatment. It comes fully loaded for OpenType savvy applications. Gerard Unger’s new typeface Alverata is a twenty-first-century type-face inspired by the shapes of romanesque capitals in inscriptions of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, without being a close imitation of them. It is additionally based on the early twentieth-century model, but tweaked so as to prevent blandness and monotony. Alverata performs beautifully in both screen and on paper, delivering excellent legibility. Its letters are open and friendly in small sizes and lively and attractive in large sizes. They are robust, and show refinement in their detail. It is an extensive type family, with versions for both formal and informal applications. Alverata consists of three different fonts: Alverata, Alverata Informal and Alverata Irregular, that variate in form and width, but maintain the same spirit. The ‘irregular’ version is particularly inspired by the Insular letterforms, the uncials, and their constantly changing positioning. Alverata PanEuropean includes Greek and Cyrillic relatives. The typeface strikes a balance among Europe’s diversity of languages, combining contemporary typographical practices with features of medieval letterforms, from the time when Europe came into being. Visually, some written languages, such as Czech and Maltese, differ quite strongly from languages like English and German, notably because of their many accented characters. While other typefaces will show this difference, Alverata removes it. As a result, Alverata enables harmonious convergence of languages.

The design is derived from a Gothic Condensed typeface, but with vertical stokes bowing inwards at the center. We modified the weight of the uppercase characters (since the original wood type has a lowercase much thinner than the caps) to harmonize with the lowercase when used digitally.

Bavaroir looks like a techno party in the throne room of Neuschwanstein: grandiose, original and still high-tech, modern, stylish and chic? anything but lifeless. The design experiment was to create a sans serif based on ?dropping endings?. Something between elegance and protest, Bavaroir coquettishly hides its edges. Although pretty narrow in design, Bavaroir still flows easily, openly and well readably, even in very small sizes. Bavaoir was designed for the URW++ FontForum.
