Recta was one of Aldo Novarese’s earliest contributions to the massive surge of the European sans serif genre that was booming in the middle of the 20th century. Initially published just one year after Neue Haas Grotesk came out of Switzerland and Univers out of France, and at a time when Akzidenz Grotesk and DIN were riding high in Germany and Gill Sans was making waves in Great Britain, it was intended to compete with all of those foundry faces, and later came to be known as the “Italian Helvetica”. It maintains traditional simplicity as its high point of functionality, while showing minimal infusion of humanistic traits. It shows that the construct of the grotesk does not have to be rigid, and can indeed have a touch of Italian flair. Plantin is a Renaissance Roman as seen through a late–industrial-revolution paradigm. Its forms aim to celebrate fine sixteenth century book typography with the requirements of mechanized typesetting and mass production in mind. How did this anomalous design come about? In 1912 Frank Hinman Pierpont of English Monotype visited the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, returning home with “knowledge, hundreds of photographs, and a stack of antique typeset specimens including a few examples of Robert Granjon’s.” Together with Fritz Stelzer of the Monotype Drawing Office, Pierpont took one of these overinked proofs taken from worn type to use as the basis of a new text face for machine composition. Body text set in Plantin produces a dark, rich texture that’s suited to editorial and book work, though it also performs its tasks on screen with ease. Sam Suliman is a condensed display face supplied in three weights – Regular, Medium and Bold – plus a set of handy italics (obliques). All six fonts are included in the value family pack. To describe what inspired Magneta would be to add a little Dwiggins, throw in some Benton with a hint of Austin, wrap it up in a crisp, contemporary package and serve. The skeleton of the family is a Garalde (like my earlier Epic) but with a desire to produce something much more transitional and contemporary, I sought to simplify, simplify, simplify. Cap and ascenders share the same height, the x-height is slightly larger than expected which should make a functional typeface for editorial, headlines or where more visually complex systems are needed. The modulation is much more intentional than historical and creates some interesting interactions between the various weights. There are both Normal and Condensed widths available with 6 different weights and matching italics, small caps, oldstyle figures, swashes, stylistic and discretionary ligatures (that includes some fun majuscule ligatures in the roman styles), there is no lack of typographic goodness for the designer. Someri (English: Sumerian) is an Arabetic type design with a Cuneiform spirit. The Someri family follows the guidelines of the Mutamathil Taqlidi type style. It has one glyph for every basic Arabic Unicode character or letter, as defined in Unicode Standards version 5.1, and one additional, final-position, glyph for each Arabic letter that is normally connected with other letters from both sides in traditional cursive Arabic strings. Someri employs variable x-height values. It includes all required Lam-Alif ligatures and uses ligature substitutions and selected marks positioning but it does not use any other glyph substitutions or forming. Text strings composed using types of this family are non-cursive with stand-alone isolated glyphs. Tatweel (or Kashida) glyph is a zero width space. Keying it before any glyph will display that glyph isolated form. Keying it before Alif Lam Lam Ha will display the Allah ligature. Someri family includes both Arabic and Arabic-Indic numerals; all required diacritic marks, Allah ligature, in addition to all standard English keyboard punctuations and major currency symbols. Seven precisely calibrated weights from »Thin« to »Heavy« and its corresponding italics make this font-family universally usable. »XPress« got its bearings from the fabulous American »Gothic« fonts of the twenties of last century. The Slatz Font Family is Vertical. It has a slender, consistent weight that is best used in limited, left to Right, space limitations as to maximize font height. Slatz font variations all have extremely clean edges and even the serif versions are crisply defined with a flat-pointed serif for an added unique character. The designed intent was for a tight kern, however evenly letterspacing these family members give a distinct personality and continues to command the negative space just as in tight kerned examples. The compatible relationship of these font family members, serif to sans serif, and regular to italic is seamless and the overall design coloring of words as sentences is well balanced and extremely legible. The Slatz Family fonts are matching members glyph to glyph yet there is a noticeable difference between the serif and sans serif members. The sans serif works in contemporary and vintage settings. The serif members work particularly well in vintage, period applications. The Bold and Drop versions of Slatz also fit the above descriptions and also work on their own.

AmpleNuSoft is a display type family derived from the AmpleNutypeface by softening the edges. It has optical mono-linear stroke and a bit squarish form in nature. It has a seamless stroke movement instead of sharp angles formed by the junction of two strokes, which is a prominent feature of its design. It is designed to be a little eye-catching yet legible. It has clear and distinguishable letterforms, which help to elaborate and emphasize the message. It is graphically strong and commands the viewer's attention. The overall appearance of type is suitable for setting and using it as heading, title, headline, logotype, etc. The type family consists of twelve styles which include six upright weights and their italics. AmpleNuSoft has a bit more squarish counters and angles than Ample typeface, it even has straight terminals while Ample has a slight curve. In addition to this, few characters have some major or minor changes and the letter ‘g’ plus ‘y’ and their respective diacritics have alternate style variations. To describe what inspired Magneta would be to add a little Dwiggins, throw in some Benton with a hint of Austin, wrap it up in a crisp, contemporary package and serve. The skeleton of the family is a Garalde (like my earlier Epic) but with a desire to produce something much more transitional and contemporary, I sought to simplify, simplify, simplify. Cap and ascenders share the same height, the x-height is slightly larger than expected which should make a functional typeface for editorial, headlines or where more visually complex systems are needed. The modulation is much more intentional than historical and creates some interesting interactions between the various weights. There are both Normal and Condensed widths available with 6 different weights and matching italics, small caps, oldstyle figures, swashes, stylistic and discretionary ligatures (that includes some fun majuscule ligatures in the roman styles), there is no lack of typographic goodness for the designer. To add some spice, a set of Decorative Ornaments have been created that include geometric, floral, curvilinear patterns and much more.

Chancery Lane is a condensed cursive with a breezy, flowing feel. Many of the lowercase characters join up, some uppercase ones too, and the two fonts are slantier than many other chancery-inspired faces, inclined at almost 20°. Each glyph has slightly rounded corners to bestow softness and warmth. The typeface emerged from a study of pen lettering, italic scripts and chancery hands – down a rabbit hole and along the Chancery Lane. The research ranged from early cancellaresca manuscripts to contemporary fonts, and also calligraphic work, most notably that of Indian artist Mayank Baranwal whose lowercase letters inspired many of the Chancery Lane glyphs. Uppercase characters have been designed to harmonise with the lowercase rather than providing overly ornamental openers, true to origins that were functional rather than fancy. Both the capitals and the uppercase alternates are unfussy and relatively simple, and the lowercase swash characters are similarly understated, only modestly flourished. Stylistic alternates and lowercase swash characters can be accessed using OpenType-aware applications or font management software.

Mr. Jenkins is designed to fill the void between the crazy, wacky and reckless comic style fonts, and the standard boring but very readable sans-serif typefaces. It makes for a distinctive bold headline, but is also quite legible at small sizes. It’s just off kilter enough to not take itself too seriously. A deceptively care-free font, each character was carefully drawn. The spacing and kerning of each letter and letter combination were painstakingly considered. Particular attention was paid to maintaining consistent optical weights and a spontaneous appearance. Mr. Jenkins is inspired heavily by humanist sans-serif faces such as Myriad and Lucida Sans, with its open apertures, and low contrast but almost calligraphic line weights. The lowercase a is single story in the italic face, but two story in the regular face. It contains uncommon features amongst many “quirky” fonts, including a full set of latin accented characters, lining and proportional figures, math symbols, standard fractions, foreign currency marks, contextual alternates, and even a few ligatures.

The Silsilah family follows the guidelines of the Mutamathil Taqlidi type style. It has one glyph for every basic Arabic Unicode character or letter, as defined in Unicode Standards version 5.1, and one additional, final-position, glyph for each Arabic letter that is normally connected with other letters from both sides in traditional cursive Arabic strings. Silsilah employs variable x-height values. It includes all required Lam-Alif ligatures and uses ligature substitutions and selected marks positioning but it does not use any other glyph substitutions or forming. Text strings composed using types of this family are non-cursive with stand-alone isolated glyphs. Tatweel (or Kashida) glyph is a zero width space. Keying it before any glyph will display that glyph isolated form. Keying it before Alif Lam Lam Ha will display the Allah ligature. Silsilah family includes both Arabic and Arabic-Indic numerals; all required diacritic marks, Allah ligature, in addition to all standard English keyboard punctuations and major currency symbols. Fonts are available in regular and italic styles.

The thing is that many sans-serif typefaces are usually intended for universal usage. But sometimes faces that work fine in body text look not so good in large point sizes for display purposes when all the contrast in non-contrast sans-serif, or ink traps, become visible to the naked eye. Every designer solves this problem in his own way. We offer a drastic solution in our Stem: a sans-serif with optical sizing. The first part of the type family, Stem Display, is for use in largest point sizes, from 36 pt indefinitely. Stem Display consists of 12 faces of widths from Hairline to Bold, and it has true italics. The development of Stem type family will include Stem Text for body text and “traditional”, universal use, and Stem Caption for small point sizes. Stem is a geometric sans-serif with semi-closed aperture, large x-height and modern proportions of uppercase letters, like in famous Avenir and Gotham. Its important feature is a professionally designed and carefully tested Cyrillic glyph set.

Treatise was born in a notebook at the back of a boring lecture on immunology with the simple thought of “How can I make a serif more fun?” When writing a scientific treatise, there are not many options for making it enjoyable. However, some little quirks and fun features in the font can take the serious edge off the writing.... Treatise is a light and open serif with some design quirks, which give it a slightly calligraphic feel; a single -storey “a” and “g,” a visible stroke mark on the “o,” and a curved arm on the “k.” These features are subtle enough to fit into a paragraph of text but bold enough to give a title some character. The Treatise family includes a true italic and a heavy-struck style bold, and several OpenType features; standard and discretional ligatures, contextual alternatives, and different figure styles. The character coverage includes Basic Latin, Latin-1 Supplement, and Latin Extended-A and will support most Latin-alphabet languages, including languages with more exotic characters such as Icelandic and Maltese.

An isolated letters typeface design with a comic feel. All letters start with a prominent circular dot. All final shape letters end with a smaller dot, in addition. The Nuqat (Arabic for dots) font family has four members which include two weights, normal and bold, and comes in regular and left-slanted italic styles. This font family design follows the guidelines of Mutamathil Taqlidi type style with one glyph for every basic Arabic Unicode character or letter, as defined in the latest Unicode Standards, and one additional final form glyph, for the freely-connecting letters in traditional Arabic cursive text. The Nuqat font family employs variable x-height values. Nuqat includes only Lam-Alif ligatures. Soft-vowel diacritic marks, harakat, are selectively positioned. Most of them appear by default on the same level, following a letter, to ensure that they would not interfere visually with letters. Tatweel is a zero-width glyph. Keying the tatweel key before Alif-Lam-Lam-Ha will display the Allah ligature. Nuqat includes both Arabic and Arabic-Indic numerals, in addition to standard punctuations.

Internacional, inspired by the International Style, is a Latin American-flavored neo-grotesque sans serif typeface made with organic ingredients and sweetened with organic sugar and chocolate. Internacional is well-suited for corporate identity, branding, publishing projects, logotypes, magazines and advertising. Its large x-height and small difference between x-height and cap-height make it a high-impact font, ideal for powerful headings, while providing legibility. Internacional was designed for use with short and mid-length paragraphs that require a balanced type color. Internacional is an extended width font with rounded forms and angled terminal ends, in characters such as “c” or “a”, which make it suitable for use in advertising and branding. The proportional relation in height between uppercase and lowercase letters may be useful when composing text in German language. The Internacional font family comes in 7 weights with matching italics and includes an alternative version, with the same number of styles, yet it tastes differently. Enamela (rhymes with Pamela) is a monoline square sans that is available in normal width and condensed versions. Although rooted in the early years of sans serif type, the Enamela fonts have a timeless quality that is practical and unpretentious. The letterforms derive from vitreous enamel signage dating from the Victorian era and widely used in Britain for street nameplates, Post Office signs, the plates on James Ludlow wall postboxes, railway signs and direction signs, as well as for circular Automobile Association wayfinding plaques throughout the first half of the twentieth century. The quirky terminals, stemming from the compression of geometric type, invite comparison with the Charles Wright fonts used for UK vehicle registration plates. Enamela and Enamela Condensed are both available in three weights – regular, medium and bold – and as italics (optically corrected obliques). A commonly used alternative M with a vertex that touches the baseline is provided at the Alt-M (µ) keystroke on a Mac, or Alt-0181 on Windows. A commonly used G with a plain vertical throat, no crosspiece, is assigned Unicode FF27 (full width capital G).

Pragmatik is a carefully crafted Square Sans by Christopher Stahl, awarded with a Commendation at the Art Director's Club Germany Junior Competition 2011 and selected as Font of the Week 42.2011 by Typolution.de. The design is influenced by the heritage of German industrial typesets like DIN, yet the use of forms and proportions feels modern and fresh. The family consists of three weights with matching italics, thus making a total of six fonts. The high x-Height and the sturdy design provide a good legibility in body text, while in larger sizes the exciting details and alternates create headlines full of atmosphere. Features: - 350 glyphs supporting central and western European languages as of DIN 16518 - over 500 manually adjusted kerning classes and pairs - available in Open Type with a host of Open Type features, such as: - proportional lining, lining table and proportional oldstyle number figures - 7 default and 16 discretionary ligatures that especially cater the needs of the German and English language - a variety of stylistic alternate figures like a stencil like i and j or an old-style Eszett.
