Attic Antique by Three Islands Press. Flipping through a friend’s old hardbound collection of John Burroughs nature essays a while back, I thought it'd be fun to try to develop a typeface with the same uneven, imperfect look to it. I picked and chose among various printed characters, enlarged them somewhat with a photocopier, then hand-rendered each. Had to custom-make some of the accents and symbols, then added a couple goofy dingbats just for the heck of it. The result: an amazingly legible serif family akin to the Century faces.

An interesting hand lettered example of Art Deco lettering (minus the letter ‘L’) was spotted on Pinterest and served as the inspiration for Deco Sketch JNL. Because there was no attribution as to the age or source of the alphabet, it can only be surmised that it was a scan from a 1930s or 1940s source. The original showed many of the irregularities of pen lettering, and had rounded terminals. The digital version has been redrawn more uniformly with flat terminals. Deco Sketch JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Honeybird originated in a study of calligraphic fonts of the 20th century, took its own direction and developed into a slightly quirky, very readable contemporary script font, typical of Anton Scholtz's free-wheeling style. The name was inspired by Dutch soccer club Vitesse's rather sad decision to leave Israeli player Dan Mori behind, after he was refused a UAE visa because of his nationality. Front Row JNL is an all-caps reinterpretation of Morris Fuller Benton's 1937 type design "Empire", and is available in both regular and oblique versions. As is often the case when a digital type font is based on a few letter examples found on a printed sample [in this case, the sheet music of the 1946 Guy Lombardo hit "What More Can I Ask For"], the missing characters were drawn from scratch.

Snemand, in Danish, means Snowman. Quite appropriate for the last month of the year! The font is all caps, but upper and lower case letters can be interchanged and it includes alternates for all lower case letters. Snemand is a very legible font and has that great 'unevenish' look - making it a great typeface for packaging and books. Enjoy the snow - while it lasts and go out. You might even build a Snemand!

There is a very simple reason why the name of this font includes a potato. Or potatoe, if you prefer. It was carefully carved out of 14,5 kg of potatoes. Or 32.0 lb of potatos. Every single letter, every digit and every symbol. Manually, of course, and care-fully. It took a while. Longer than digitizing it, but since we love great quality, we put just as much care into this process.

Festiva is based on lettering found on a 1960s kitchen appliance catalog. It evokes ’60s TV and pop culture while still having a contemporary feel. Lower-case lettering is so-called because the characters that we know as lower-case were once kept in the bottom, shallow drawers of a type compositor's typecase. Not a lot of people know that, and we suspect superstar artist and FAIRYTALE FANTASIES Calendar creator, J Scott Campbell doesn't either because even though we looked high and low, in every single one of his drawers, we still could not find a single example of Scott EVER writing in lower case, but we begged him, we pleaded with him and, eventually we HYPNOTIZED him, and here's the font you'll find in J.
